In the old middle ages in Central Europe, a lot of regular folks couldn't afford a sword, so most people would use a small shield and a club, even if they were called up to join a standing army. So the standing army would have swords and proper shields and helmets and all that cool stuff, but the local mercs would use the good old 'bat and buckler' combo. I wouldn't say no to a decent helmet, but in a massive melee, I'd rather have a bat and buckler any day. You want a sword? Well, fight hard for five minutes or so and there will be plenty of them laying around on the ground!

I have over 30 blades from Cold Steel and they are incredible. If I were you, I would get on their website and check out their Kukris. Some of them are less than $40. I have 4 of various sizes. You absolutely WILL NOT believe it until you have one in your hands. I wouldn't give you $10 for 3 of those mall swords. I've been a Cold Steel fan for over 25 years. I have over 80 total pieces and have lost about 10 over the years. Even their shovel is a beast. Sharp and cuts like a sword and is aerodynamic! Trust me... They have something for every budget and none of it is garbage. Start cheap and you'll be a lifer like me. I buy nothing else now. Great sale going on now also!

Sometimes too long handel gets it the way, also depending on your clothing, but adds cutting power. So it's always a compromise of somekind, and a matter of preference. It's good to have all those multiple option on your inventory. I think everyone can eventually find there own from all those different options.

Hi Richard, slim chance you will see this but I currently own the normal dragonfly waki. I love it but it's very forward balanced. Does the long handle version actually have a longer tang for a counter balance, or is it just simply a longer wood handle for more grip? Does it feel that much different?

My swordsmanship extends only to the humble machete and vegetation adversaries. But I transform into a martial arts bad ass whenever I attack unsuspecting weeds. Here's a story. I have a Cold Steel two handed machete that hacks through weeds very effectively. I bought an expensive "professional" tool for my work since I liked the idea, but wanted a hooked blade. Stupid thing broke on the first job. Blade is fine and I'll replace the handle. But I should have just bought 3 or 4 more Cold Steel products for what that cost.

This video is super cool, I just want to share some historical facts (not criticism). Ninja likely never wore the black clothing most people know them for, and typically dressed as farmers to blend in with the local population. Moreover, it is extremely unlikely that a ninja would have a wakizashi, katana, or other samurai weapon, as being discovered with a weapon that is not within your birthright was a crime punishable by death, and would further blow their cover. Real ninja likely used a weapon known as a kuradigama, which was a sickle connected to a ball and chain, as this weapon was easily disassembled into traditional farmer tools.

I would agree with Andrew Demco. Watch that Warrior Series video where they cut 250 ropes, 250 mats, smacked the blade on the table, grinded the edge, and bend the blade like a pretzel 🥨. They filmed that on KZbin like 10 years ago, it was on one of their older videos. It was amazing!

Lately I've been gobbling up the San Mai series. Tanto XII and Tai Pan are my favorites. I have a Wakizashi Dragonfly coming, with 9.3" handle. I think this would be the longest sword I'd want. I doubt it will be conducive to regular carry in the modern world, so It will be relegated to backup use. I hope the handle holds up to regular use, unlike the videos I've seen of loose bits after some chops of bamboo.
@sougetsu2122 жыл бұрын
I have one of these. They are a little longer than a wakazashi. I like to think it sits somewhere closer to a ko-katana especially since its handle can be held with 2 hands. Is this an accurate assumption? Oh, i forgot to add, the dragonfly wakazashi now has a 9 1/2 inch handle.

The "ko katana" was actually how the ninja started modifying their katanas for indoors. They would switch the handle from a katana and put in on their wakizashi to create the infamous "ninja" sword. The ninjato sword was created to fill a demand of people wanting the "hollywood" ninja sword that was straight with a square tsuba

Straight blade ninja swords (ninja-to) is more of a Hollywood creation. But in Feudal Japan, only Samurai were allowed to carry Katana. So, more than likely, Ninja used Wakizashi with longer handles and carried them on their backs, either with correct length or longer sheaths, when doing their business. But Ninja also used straight blade swords more as concealed weapons in canes, walking sticks, umbrellas, etc., when tasks required stealth and discretion. In fact, the Ninja has the largest arsenal of any ancient warrior at their disposal. I am no Japanese sword expert. This is what I have learned from reading books and watching videos from people that know the history of Feudal Japan.

Yeah I'm not a fan of differentially heat-treated swords. They tend to be less forgiving and can take a set way easier. With that said I'd go for something with better steel and a broader blade. A few zombie tools swords come to mind. Although the cold steel Gross Messer isn't too bad. Just wish it was a better steel. Like 5160 or 9260.
