Indeed. According to the medieval law, walking in a town with a sword was punished severely, even with death. There were law restrictions on weapons which were allowed to be carried, therefore the messer type of weapons were the only ones allowed to be carried because they fell under the so called "knife" category.

I have own the Cold Steel Grosse Messer for about a year now and for the price it is good. However, mine is quite heavy, weighing exactly 4 pounds, and it is really thick towards the point. This makes it harder to cut for the upper fourth of the blade. I am thinking about grinding down the thick part of the blade and adding a false edge to try to reduce weight and increase cutting ability. However, I am posting this so that maybe Cold Steel will see this and improve this sword. I am not hating

As a German, I can say that is plainly not a "sword" but in fact a large knife. We even peel apples with them
@Ranziel110 жыл бұрын
TheAkatskisquire123 There's a theory that a "messer" sword was invented to circumvent legislation in Medieval Europe. A lot of countries banned commoners from using swords, so they came up with this thing. Single edge, the handle is like the one on a knife with rivets going through it, and an unusual lopsided pommel to separate it from falchions, which were also intended for war. So it's perfectly legal. It's a knife, bailiff, see?
@TheAkatskisquire1239 жыл бұрын
Ranziel1 Precisely.
@brainplay80609 жыл бұрын
Ranziel1 Nope, Messer's were mass produced swords for the common soldier. At the time iron and steel was able to be bought in sheet and bar form. These were drawn out to length, the front was hammered to a curve, and then it was ground to shape. No special shaping nor fullers were added. The handles were cheap wood place on either side and ground down like a regular kitchen knife hence the name "messer" (grosse messer literally means large knife). The heavy weight we great for cutting through quilted armor common among levied troops and the heavy weight did a great deal of impact damage. But it was cheap and fast to make which made them very popular. It was rivaled by the falchion. Ironically, like the falchion, the upper class knights began to use them as well. They proved to be a good compromise between a sword and a warhammer on horseback while being cheaper. This led to finer versions being created including some that looked like fine scimitars albeit heavier..

I SO wish Cold Steel would do a Byzantine paramerion. Nobody offers Byzantine weaponry, but the first who does will capitalize.
@ramiabiakar23919 жыл бұрын
These early sabers are relatively common among Polish reenactors of the IX-XI century. I'm quite sure you could order something of this kind from Europe.
@Ambarenya139 жыл бұрын
Jersey Streicher The Polish sabres are nice, but they lack many of the defining features of the Byzantine parameria. Notably: the full crossguard without the foreguard, R type pommel, and only slightly curved blade (Polish sabres tend to curve a lot). I don't see why no one has done a proper Byzantine weapon. They do the whole gamut from Western Europe to East Asia - why is Byzantium omitted? There's definitely people out there that would buy Byzantine weapons.
@ramiabiakar23919 жыл бұрын
Ambarenya13 Proprietary Polish sabers didn't appear before the XV century. Ones used in the IX-XI century were closely similar to the Byzantine ones except for the short crossguard. Check the Arma Maciejko website, they have an English version of the site and an early saber model in offer.
@Ambarenya139 жыл бұрын
Jersey Streicher Thanks for the suggestion. I checked them out, but while they look nice, they aren't Byzantine enough for me. I'll probably just have one custom made to my specifications at some point. Still, I think it's sad that Byzantium doesn't get any love from swordmakers.

Straight Kriegs Messer is basically a katana without the horrible flaws (curve, puny guard, no flexibility).
@edi98928 жыл бұрын
+Baltazar Vok The disadvantage of a Kriegsmesser is that it's quite heavy even for a european sword of it's size. Why should the curve be a problem? It's not really meant for thrusting.
@googlesword92098 жыл бұрын
+edi The curvature on most katana is not enough to actually enhance it's cutting ability making it rather redundant. The thick back of the blade is what truly gives it the famed cutting power. The small disc guard is not much protection for battle so replace it with a crossguard and that problem is fixed. Also the curve on a katana makes thrusting difficult. So if the curve is a hindrance to thrusting with negligible assistance to cutting why not just remove it so you get a better thrust? The Kriegsmesser is the answer to that.
@edi98928 жыл бұрын
Brandon Lee I once heared that many katana were forged straight but bend during the differential hardening process. Later Katana were forged bent allowing a greater variation. Regarding the thrust: the curvature is no problem for me, but the broad tip and foreward ballance are an issue to me. I can thrust with even more curved blades, but that requires a different technique and quite some practice (to make the point go where you want).

This video is intense, but it was really informative and fun to watch! Cold Steel is a company that knows what customers want, and rarely disappoints! (I'll tell the wife that it's for bushwhacking purposes)😂

What interests me is not the sharp edge cutting objects but how do they hold up smashing edges against other swords , were the constantly chunking their blades and repairing them ,they would have to be chipping and Chunking surely
