read the manga years ago and dont quite remember much aside from the very beginning and the first concert, but I believe the breakup happened because Mafuyu was lonely. Yuki started spending all his time with the band, and Mafuyu was left alone. While Yuki did care about his boyfriend, I dont think he had the maturity to really understand what he was putting Mafuyu through. I mean, Mafuyu is a child of abuse, and while his mother seems super nice, the abuse he received definitely affected him. He has trouble expressing emotions and he became extremely attached to Yuki during the abuse. It is hinted at in the anime that Yuki and his mom may have been the reason why Mafuyu's father was arrested. Add to it that their other school friends believe they became childhood friends by both being latchkey kids with single moms, the only person who knew about the abuse was Yuki. Yuki was Mafuyu's everything. To suddenly have Yuki be distant, spend less time with him, leave Mafuyu lonely for the first time ever, he didnt know how to respond. He hated being alone and lashed out at Yuki, because he no longer felt precious to him. He no longer felt cared for. Yuki tried to abate his fears only for Mafuyu to snap back "Then you would die for me". It is a terrible thing he said. But he also didnt have the emotional maturity to say what he felt, instead becoming bitter and lashing out. Yuki loved him so much he felt the only way to prove it was to do what Mafuyu said and killed himself. Hiiragi knew the fight was bad, knew how upset Yuki was. Knew that things weren't okay, but he still left Yuki alone. He knew how much it hurt his friend, but told himself it had nothing to do with him. He feels guilt because he feels he could have stopped it if he had just stayed by Yuki's side. And Mafuyu feels guilt for what he said. It's the most realistic depiction of abuse victims in relationships as well as survivors guilt. And the fact that the show makes this whole arc about learning to move on, setting the foundation for the characters to find forgiveness in each other and themselves and let themselves finally really let go of the weight of their past and freely move forward. This is the best story to have ever gotten an animated release.

Reading the comments I feel like Uenoyama is not appreciated enough. I can't even imagine what Yuki and Mafuyu went through, how Yuki had no one to talk to and felt so lost that after that single line he suddenly just- And yet, I wouldn't change a thing. There's a LOT we don't know about their relationship that feels kinda fishy, there aren't perfect couples, but right now? Uenoyama gave Mafuyu friends, hope, a way to express himself, most importantly he gave Mafuyu the chance to mourn Yuki. It feels so overlooked that upsets me I felt the need to say this :(

Yes, I agree. Uenoyama is really help Mafuyu to live. Mafuyu also do it for Uenoyama. Their relationship is beautiful, and most of the fans are obsessed with Yuki. Don't get me wrong, I love him too, but sometimes people forget about Uenoyama, which is very sad for me, since he is one of my favourite character and his relationship with Mafuyu is my favourite ship.

Yuki and mafuyu's relationship was really meant to end. The difference between ue and yuki is that ue decided to make music with mafuyu. Uenoyama really supported mafuyu and even knowing that his love wrote a song for yuki he still help him to finish it and even acknowledges mafuyu's decisions like ackkkk😍

uenoyama loves is a new experience for mafuyu.. yuki x mafuyu has deep, intense relationship, while uenoyama x mafuyu is a pure loves, not do so much skinship. but if we look more into uenoyama position.. he is the one who picking a pieces of mafuyu broken heart, he help mafuyu to move on, he also do something that yuki can't do for mafuyu back then.. he never complain.. he never asking more about mafuyu pain in the past, and only see the future mafuyu.. he being considerate.. he also continue the unfinished yuki's song.. and he becomes know more about yuki feeling to mafuyu through his music.. i bet if yuki can talk with uenoyama he would say.. thank you uenoyama for taking care of my beloved and also my music.. mafuyu deserve to be happy with you.. thank you for everything.. and uenoyama will answer thanks to you too yuki.. because i can understand your feeling to mafuyu through the music and also i met mafuyu through music.. even you're not here anymore but your guitar is still here with mafuyu.. i promise to always makes mafuyu happy..

Ue and Yuki have their own roles in helping Mafuyu grow. The most important thing is that they both love Mafuyu wholeheartedly. IMO Yuki himself was not in his best shape mentally hence what he did (ending his own life) but he's done a lot for Mafuyu all his life. And Uesama like you said is here to pick up the pieces and put them together. Ue has a big impact in Mafuyu's life (tho some fans would not admit that). Mafuyu slowly makes sense everything happened to him and slowly processes them. He was numb before meeting Ue and it was scary to watch. Those who are numb are the scariest coz they have nothing to lose.

Just read the manga after watching the anime in 2019... in the manga, yuki was actually busy making a song for mafuyu, and during that train station fight he said something along the line of: I'd do anything for you, then mafuyu replied with: would you die for me then? That's why hiragi said "you just need him to ask you to make a song tgt" after listening to fuyu no hanashi. As in, ue actually involved mafuyu in making the song that he hummed often, while yuki didn't. That's why it hurt even more after reading the manga 🥲🥲 totally recommend ppl to read the manga, especially for ugetsu and akihiko's arc...

But do you know, it's really so hard for persons like Mafuyu to even smile openly, cry or to express themselves how others normally can and it constantly keeps hurting you even more for carrying the pain in themselves all the time without draining it. I'm Happy finally he could let those tears out and smile n blend to surroundings lil by lil and to have Uenoyama who loves him^^ and ofcourse Haruki and Akihiko to care^^ finally his all broken strings of life get replaced ♡

I think may be I’m the only one who noticed that at the backstage after Mafuyu sang Fuyunohanashi, Ue kissed Mafuyu, then Mafuyu finally cried, he cried for the very first time in the anime. For me, I interpreted it as winter finally ended, snow has melted, and summer has finally begun for Mafuyu.

In my imagination, I would think about that there was a boy named Mifuyu Satomiya who met a boy named Sadaka Yamamoto and they both have love ❤️ relationships together, that mean same with Mafuyu and Ritsuka. I do, their relatinoship was dependent in the end. They loved each other, but they would bring the other down - like Akihiko and Ugetsu, since Yuki did something alone one time, and they didn't knew what to do. Mafuyu didn't knew how to express his feelings, Yuki didn't realized what he did with him. Leave him alone, and he didn't noticed there's a problem. I belive if Yuki hadn't kill himself, they would break up after a while. Uenoyama understand Mafuyu in a way Yuki never did. I'm not saying their relationship was bad, it was cute when they was a child, I just say it didn't worked in the end.

one can infer it was because of yuki spending so much time away from mafuyu. they grew up so closely together and depended on one another so much, so when yuki started working multiple jobs, going to a different high school than mafuyu, and spending more time with his band mates, mafuyu felt left out and lonely and they fought as a byproduct of that
