I had the opportunity to visit Appomattox a couple of years ago. One of the things that surprised me was how small the room was where the surrender took place. I remember thinking to myself, how did all the people that were supposedly there fit into this room? I also am curious as to where the surrender documents might be. Are they in the national archives? I've never heard of them being on display anywhere.

Very interesting. The surrender seemed so simple and cut and dried, but we all know that wasn't the case because our nation is still dealing with the after effects of this tragic but necessary war. We probably will as long as America continues to exist. Thank you for this providing this video.

Didn't George Custer acquire the small table that the surrender documents were drafted on ?

MACONE Scotland I heard that somewhere too. Guess he didn't get to enjoy it very long though.

The table was purchased from Wilmar McLean by Philip Sheridan, and sent as a keepsake to Custers wife.

Such a dignified end to a bloody and tragic war. It's been said that more American soldiers died in that war than any other. In truth All the casualties of that war were Americans.

Americans mainly but also many Irish and British north americans. Notables a canadian under Custers command who killed J.E.B. Stuart at yellow tavern.

I read that after the surrender that Gen. Sheridan bought the small table the surrender was signed on from Wilmer McLean for $10. or $20. dollars.

I've read that all the soldiers/officers (both sides) looted the home, including tearing down wallpaper for souvenirs

One of my ancestors from Rome Ga was there, and I read about it in his journal. Lee's other leaders said - we can turn to guerila warfare like Quantrill, Moseby + Forrest used. Hit and run, Let's not surrender General - we must keep fighting. Lee said no - it's time to end this thing. That is a leader. If they had used Indian tactics from the beginning, they may have indeed won their freedom
