Thanks for this sincere device! For UI frameworks like bootstrap, materialize, foundation, ionic, framework7, jquery mobile, we don't actually really need to learn the class by heart, we just need to use the pre-defined template, components, layout by simply copying and pasting, that's all, it gives us a beautiful website right in front of us in no time...

so I've followed you for a while now.. in the process got my first job as a web developer.. this issue came up at work, made a beautiful (as in grid beautiful) grid schedule, in css grid, learning to work with it in the process. BUT... had to literally use bootstrap because there was aspects of the code in css grid that was not supported in older IE. The user base of the client is like 70% IE users accorsing to their stats. I thought of you right away, and now you posted this video talking about it haha, just great, I'm now focusing on the big picture, bootstrap is working great for the specific job they need done, but I hope I can move onto css grid fully soon... really glad I went into it though..

You're totally spot on, IMO. As I traverse the never ending minefield of technologies, I find that I'm always coming back to the core because I can simply develop faster with them. For instance, I learned the basics of Bootstrap (e.g., buttons, containers, etc) just to get some projects off the ground, but when it came time to learning Bootstrap at a deeper level, the fact is I could develop the same project using CSS, HTML5, and Flexbox much faster. The same could be said for jQuery. I found that I could spend twenty minutes figuring out the jQuery way, or just knock it out using vanilla JS in a minute or two. Admittedly it puts me at a disadvantage with respect to jQuery because of it's popularity, but I'll just have to take that hit.

Another good example of core tech displacing 3rd-party is HTML5 replacing JavaScript in many places. For example, HTML5 can validate phone number fields with regex, which was once only possible with JavaScript.

Yes ... good example. I remember how hard it was to create a good date picker in a web form ... HTML5 makes that trivial now.

HTML5 makes creating the most basic of date pickers trivial. If you want anything to be customized, you're going right back to JavaScript. You also have contend with the fact that the date picker will look different from browser to browser, and that you will have no control over the date format, as that is controlled by the user's locale settings.

Software, buildings, engines, whatever - it's all about delivering a product by the deadline with as little overhead as possible while meeting the requirements of the business. Bootstrap vs CSS is like Python vs Assembly. Abstraction from core technologies is never a good idea unless time is a factor

I like using Bootstrap. It speeds up your workflow and it keeps the cost of the job down which makes it more affordable for clients. That being said, I do agree with you, it's important to first know the fundamentals of each language in your stack so if needed, you can create bespoke websites that aren't bloated with unnecessary code which is what you find in some of the larger Frontend frameworks like Bootstrap by default. Cool thing about Bootstrap is you can customize your download and only use the code you want thereby reducing the code bloat.

I had a first hand experience of what you're discussing here. I used to be a flash developer and when the technology died I realized how important it is to learn core tech instead of relying on 3rd party languages, so I avoided Bootstrap and learned vanilla CSS. Glad to have done that because I can see bootsrap heading to the same direction as flash, no offense to bootsrap fans but when the core tech catches up with what Bootsrap can do, bootsrap could be obsolete, for the simple reason that CSS will always be lighter on its own than adding 3rd party tech that does the same thing.

I agree with you ! Stick to core technology. But maybe you forgot to mention that CSS Grid is fairly new at its adoption by browsers. So Bootstraps was a good starting point. Maybe later, there will be demand to port bootstrap 3/4 to CSS GRID. Knowing both could be an advantage in this case. Bootstrap is easy to learn, doable within 2 weeks with solid knowledge of core css.

For prototyping bootstrap is the king why because of the componets you get out of the box and the styling. The days when bootstrap was all about the grid system has long passed. If I use bootstrap today its because of the styling on the buttons or the forms. This debate remind so much about flexbox when it came out

When I started with CSS there was no Flexbox or CSS grid, and to do the job with margins and floats was really pain in the ass, especially for me who most of the time think about a relations in the database and how to sort arrays through loops and conditionals. I never master CSS and usually I need a refresher. I seen the new grid system but it's way more complicated to use it than Boodstrap which is very well integrated in Laravel. So, if someone is going through basic and have an interest to be a front-end or full-stack, than definitely learn CSS grid first and well! For me, Bootstrap is the choice because it's still make job done faster and learning CSS grid ins't that relevant for me because I will forget it anyway, because I don't use native CSS too much.

css grid is really great. I really like it. For example, one thing you can do in grid, is actually get a real piece of grid paper, and draw your website. Then you can take that design and create a webpage from it. It's a doddle once you get past the initial learning curve. I wouldn't design a website any other way these days. The older browsers can't handle it, which my response to that is - update your browser. It's like you have an old car, and the gas station stopped selling your petrol...tough. Get a new car.

Currently I am using Bootstrap and Foundation. July 2019. Still most of my customers use browsers that do not support grid (older mobile phones that will take ages to update - meaning buy a new one! - and some older desktops). so no, even in 2019 it is not possible to only use grid. My solutions, use inline-block divs and left float them. Just specify width and height and it will work.

Working in a tech company flexbox knowledge is more of less expected as core knowledge now for building responsive sites, to the point where old float designs are an antipattern. And given it is pretty much supported by all active browsers >ie11. In 2019/20 I would strongly recommend flexbox knowledge as part of the core css knowledge. And likely as IE11 dies css grid will become a standard tool in the next 2-3 years. Bootstrap will just be a skin like Material UI.

What's weird is that I see some companies start with Ruby on rails rather than PHP, then on the interview all they ask about are questions about how to tweak performance and how to write efficient code... I guess it's cause they want more consistency in their code implementation? As u can get away with many different things with PHP, while Ruby is more strict, making it better for larger teams?

The thing you brushed off is Bootstrap is not just a grid system. Yes, CSS Grid looks like great progress and I'll absolutely watch it take off. However, it's just layout. Bootstrap is so much more - it's ready-to-use library of components (tables, alerts, badges, buttons, carousel, collapsible elements, navbars, progress bars, tooltips, icons) with coherent typography and colors, as well as a collection of handy little classes for adding borders, vertical alignment, etc. Sure CSS Grid is core technology and I wouldn't be surprised if someday Bootstrap moves to use it under the hood, but I think you're underestimating the need for such frameworks. While the layout part will likely become obsolete, there is still need and demand for UI libraries, in particular for rapid prototyping when you just can't be bothered designing your color palette and visual identity.

Why not both ? Many devs find that using many classes makes code unreadable. In fact just looking at the HTML, with framework you can read and understand how something will flow, without opening and finding the css file. Css grid is not here to replace media queries either. The correct title would be CSS grid or Bootstrap grid ?

Bootstrap 4 uses the core tech under the hood (flexbox) so I wouldnt compare it to flash.. flash was a whole seperate layer...not sure i totally agree with that comparison.

@Stefan Mischook do you stand by this now in early 2023, or would you say that Bootstrap and other frameworks have now been around long enough to be considered 'core' akin to Python libraries (eg: Pandas, numpy etc...). This is not a loaded question, and I think I know the answer. Consider the context where end goal is for a business building web app(s) and not terribly interested in the 'Job Market' as such.

Just do very basis Bootstrap tutorial and perhaps Tailwind. Just enough so you know the very basics. Then when a project comes up, you will know which framework might be useful to you for that project.

5:05, the real reason that old browsers are still in use is NOT because of boomers not updating their browsers. It's because some corporate IT departments have deliberately "frozen time" so they can run garbage but "mission-critical" enterprise applications that require Internet Explorer with specific ActiveX controls. IMHO, the truly tragic thing is that it took whoever controls the css standard nearly 25 YEARS to figure out how to do layout. They knew back in the very early naughts that people were creating "web applications" and needed, desperately, to just put freaking things on the top, sides and bottoms of a page in a predictable easy way. Desktop application developers have enjoyed layout management tools since the dawn of GUI's. It's kind of cruel that the w3c didn't just acknowledge that web-applications were a thing in 2000 and adapt css accordingly. We could have had a css layout mechanism that was fully compatible with UI application more than 20 years ago.

Yeah, once flexbox and CSS grid came out, it made bootstrap unecessary. Unless you want the JavaScript bootstrap includes.

I dont think framework like bootstrap will die any time soon, it allow a lot of software engineer to enter web developement without having to go to the trouble of learning front-end design and still make somewhat decent website. Still if your job is centered around web integration, well yeah, you should clearly learn css thoroughly, because framework as compare to a language get outdated and replace really easily

I saw a video from July last year dealing with a similar topic; using Css-Grid in generall withouth business considerations. The lecturer pointed out, that you could use another Css-Feature called support-queries to distinct between browsers who support Css-Grid and those who dont. And for all the browsers without support, you could use mobile layout and maybe some improvements by using Css-Flex. Most mobile pages look and behave great on larger screens. What do you think about that?

CSS Grid Flexbox, I believe is going to be the way. Zurb even knows this as they stopped maintaining Foundation. Something I think we will see by the others.
