The term "em" comes from the printing industry, where it was used to refer to the width of the capital letter M in a particular font. In the early days of typesetting, the width of the M was used as a standard unit of measure because it was typically the widest letter in a font and therefore a good reference point.

Another solution is to use "pixel" instead of "em". Is this statement OK?
@ColorCodeio5 жыл бұрын
Definitely. You can use pixels and you do often. I tall about it more in the previous video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6mzqpqZhManfJo

How about we make EM stand for expected measurement and REM to stand for relative to the expected measurement (based on the set HTML font size parent element)? What do you guys think?

I found your tutorials on Udemy, and eventually got here. Excellent videos for beginners. The world needs more teachers like you who can make learning fun. Thank you! Also, found out that em means “emphemeral unit” which means relative to it's current font.

may be rem is for relative em
@bobolino205 жыл бұрын
So why don't we just use REM everywhere?
@ColorCodeio5 жыл бұрын
Robert, it's perfectly fine to use REM for the majority of your sizing specs. I do that often and you can certainly do it to bring a lot of harmony into your page. One issue with REM is it requires a much more thoughtful approach to your CSS architecture. Most developers are looking for a quick fix and move on from CSS, REM doesn't like that and it won't behave right unless set up properly. There are also certain cases where absolute sizing makes more sense, logo size, border width, other things that you want complete control and fixed sizing for at all times, in all screensizes. But your question is valid and you are not wrong.
