Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) on commercial trucks may pose a grave cybersecurity threat to the nation's supply chain. Watch this video as Jake Jepson, a graduate student in the Colorado State University Department of Systems Engineering, explains how he and his team hacked a truck as it drove down an airstrip.
The researchers recently presented a paper at the 2024 Second ISOC Symposium on Vehicle Security and Privacy (VehicleSec) where they discussed this threat in detail and proposed changes to regulations that would correct the issues they identified. They discuss other implications of this vulnerability in their paper, such as the possibility of a contagious cyber worm.
Jake Jepson, Rik Chatterjee, and Jeremy Daily were awarded the "ETAS Best Paper Award Runner-Up" for their work in identifying these vulnerabilities.
