Socratica. @3:45 saved my ass during my job interview Monday. I had to convert a text file with garbled data to a file that could be opened in Excel. I usually use Linux so I was mortified when I discovered that it was inserting blank lines after each row in the file. Then I remembered this video that I watched while cramming for the interview. They left a voicemail last night, saying they had "good news." Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for the tutorials. These are excellent and so fun to watch. One suggestion, if possible, try not having the codes written on the very bottom of the video screen. When pausing the video to follow the steps and copy the codes the loading bar will appear and block the content. it is not even a problem, but I guess this could help the viewers trying to copy the codes =)

Great tutorials! Simple tip for accessibility: Avoid using the bottom 1/10th of the video window, as it will be covered by closed captions. With captions on, I can't see the code, arrows, and other content you're describing. Keeping content above the bottom 1/10th of the video window improves accessibility for users with hearing impairments and those who aren't fluent English speakers.

The example being used is far too complex and it doesn't make much sense, sure knowing the stock values of the first 10 years of Google sounds cool, but in terms of learning, it doesn't contribute. I've tried to follow the example with my CSV file and there aren't as many data types, it only made sense for me if I downloaded the same exact CSV.

Just a quibble but using date formats such as 3/4/2014 is a bad idea. I've lived half my life in the UK that uses the format that all of the planet except Japan and the US use, and the other half in the US which uses its own illogical format. Whenever I read a date in either format, my brain just wants to explode or shutdown. I'd always use 03-Apr-2014 or 04-Mar-2014 so that 3/4/2014 isn't ambiguous. It also means that the string length is constant. Love this series, though.
@Socratica
@Socratica 6 жыл бұрын
It is maddening, these mixed date conventions. Here at Socratica, we write 20171201 on our digital files (year month day) so we can sort easily. But for writing, we write 01 December 2017, like you, because you can read it in a glance. Don't get us started on Daylight Savings Time...
@reathm
@reathm 6 жыл бұрын
Speaking of "quibble": the only international standard for dates (and I do mean the *only* standard in existence) is 2017-12-01 (see ISO 8601 for details). 12/1/2017 is as wrong as 1/12/2017 or 01-Dec-2017 or xkcd.com/1179/. As far as I can tell, it's only used consistently in the PRC, but it's a good first step!
@onesandzeroes
@onesandzeroes 5 жыл бұрын
@@reathm Let's just talk about logic rather than standards. Day-month-year is logical. So is year-month-day. The US system of month-day-year is illogical and a brain that isn't specifically taught to override logic since childhood has a problem processing it.
@reathm
@reathm 5 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the polite response, but I disagree with its conclusion. Numbers are written, as a matter of convention, by writing the most significant number to the left, and the least significant number to the right. You have, growing up, become accustomed to seeing dates written the opposite way, but dd/mm/yyyy is as logical as writing 00:30:12 for "half past noon", or 5.10 for "ten and a half". The European way of writing dates is a historical artifact, not the product of "logic". You have an appreciation for the format's order (small to big, i.e. "monotonic"), but "monotonicity" isn't the same as "logic" when it defies the only number ordering method used in the world. The ISO standard is not just a standard, it is the only logical and coherent way of writing a datetime (YYYY-MM-DD hh-mm-ss.etc). As an exercise, imagine writing a piece of software to order filenames written in the format DDMMYYYY. I think you will conclude "something isn't right".
@onesandzeroes
@onesandzeroes 5 жыл бұрын
@@reathm Yes, something isn't right, and that is the American way of writing 12/25/2018. I'm not saying that the European method is the result of logical calculation, but it has the logical order that would be expected of this kind of system (from least to most or vice versa). And I agree that the ISO standard is superior, and that is actually the way a lot of documents in Europe and elsewhere use. It's quite natural for us to use this system. And it is also the only logical system for computers. But I think whether you go from most to least or vice versa in daily life is a matter of convention. What is inexcusable is introducing a logical mess. And I don't mean phrases like December 25th, 2018, which are perfectly understandable because of their descriptive nature. The "not right" thing is the above mentioned purely numerical system with the arbitrary placement of month before day before year.

1:35 the date is not in ISO format (yyyy-mm-dd). My disappointment is immeasurable and my day ruined! Literally unwatchable! Generally never use read csv, only pandas module, which handles everything in this tutorial and more.

python no longer supports Windows 7 ? Did bill gutless buy out Python? I mean really! Windows 7 will be used as long as Win XP. Doesn't matter what bill gutless says and I will NEVER put anything above Windows 7 on my personal computers.

CSV = the least common denominator for storing ordered data. Of course, it's the LCD, but that doesn't mean it's the absolute worst way of storing data. For instance, if you like giving Bill Gates your money, store it in a spreadsheet.
