I talked to a train crew for BNSF a few years ago when they worked on the tracks in Fullerton, CA. It started raining, and they didn't even slow down. They said the trains never stop, never end, and they liked the cool rain. They work in 120 degree heat, too. Very nice people. My son was so happy that day. He has Autism.

I worked on a Yard Section Gang before modernization. Every bit of equipment we used was powered by muscle, it was steel on steel, spiking hammers shovels to move chat and ties and the good old track jack. We bent track with long pry bars. Man that job really sucked. I would later become a fireman(old days) and man did I love that job, drove a 75 foot straight ladder truck that was a Mack convertible with a straight shift that had to be double clutched. Yeah, I'm old as dirt.

The goods train clacking away endlessly, could not make out how many engines were hauling! What a time the engine drivers must be having hauling such a long train of wagons! The sheer momentum itself must be stupendous and halting the train must be a task. Pl elaborate RFF. VishG

That machine is heating the rail to get the correct expansion so that the rail does not buckle or snap due to temperature variances throughout the seasons. There is a formula used so that they know the correct expansion needed based on how long the section of rail is being installed.

In the UK long rails are welded under tension & I believe the temperature is taken this is to account for track elongation/shrinkage Is it the same in US? The mobile flash butt welding is neat as it does not leave any flash to grind off like the thermit welding genually used in the UK by Network Rail An observation your track/sleeper replacement seens to be very old fashioned as we have automated it with equipment made by Plasser &Thurber

Hmmmmm. Looks like that rail stamp says 1974 (headloss prevalent) sleepers life expired which probably means track bed is life expired too especially given freight tonnage. Seems an inordinate amount of work using a production system but not being privy to renewal or life extension strategy, it’s difficult to judge. In UK or Europe this would be a prime high output renewal site using a Plasser or Matisa track relaying system (delivering concrete sleepers with Pandrol or vortok clips) and a Plasser BCS900 (ballast cleaning system) with a 09-3x or 4x and crazy regulator following. In the UK, with less than 8hr mid week access to track over 700yds a shift can be delivered - effectively 3 rail strings in length each being 236yds.
