Big Trains Cross Over At The Railroad Interchange Where Norfolk Southern Diverges From CSX! Listen To This Union Pacific Locomotive Working Hard As A Mid Train DPU! It purrs through the crossovers as the wheels clank over the rail joints. This is big time urban railroading in Hamilton, Ohio! A CSX local switching freight train also cruises by with the locomotive running long hood forward (LHF). Listen to the train horn as the GP38-2 growls on by me at the railroad crossing on Butler Street. Son, it was cold when I filmed this!
The first train is a CSX mixed freight heading southbound for Queensgate Yard in Cincinnati. It is at the crossovers going from Track 1 to Track 2 and then taking the interchange track onto the Norfolk Southern mainline. There is a section of track in Hamilton that is shared by Norfolk Southern and Amtrak although it is owned by CSX. Both lines share each others track below Hamilton in order to have directional running. Most trains on CSX run northbound between Hamilton and Cincinnati. Most trains on Norfolk Southern run southbound. Yes, there are exceptions like the Indy Sub that connects onto the main at the wye where the old depot is currently standing. If you count the cars on the first two trains you deserve some type of award!
The second train is a Norfolk Southern mixed freight that has foreign power in the lead and in the middle with the DPU. Seeing Union Pacific locomotives on the NS line is no longer rare although its not very common either. That train is taking the same route as the CSX train. What do you think about the horn on the leading UP locomotive? Was that awesome or what?!
The next train is a CSX local switching train running south but staying on the CSX mainline. They have customers to switch that require the train to run against the traffic. Best frequencies in Hamilton are 160.230 and 160.320 for CSX and 160.230 and 160.440 for Norfolk Southern. 452.9375 is good for the end of train device. I don't use the EOT frequency in Hamilton because there are stopped trains in the yard north of town and other stopped trains nearby that keep that frequency chirping all the time.

The U.P. SD70AH 3035 lead on the second train is part of a group of the last new EMD's purchased by U.P., a Tier 4 locomotive with an all-new engine to meet the strict Tier 4 emissions standards. These likely will be the last new locomotives U.P. buys for a long while as they have contracted for 600 of the oldest GE engines to rebuilt and upgraded. The EMD Tier 4 engines all have a powerful horn that stands out from the rest. Here in Roseville we can easily determine when these Tier 4's are on the point of a consist. It's pretty rare to seem them as leaders on other roads. Great video as usual.

Mr. JT - it's time for a large 2-cream, 2-sugar coffee and perhaps a donut. (or 2) Definitely getting colder: the winter is approaching. December 21, we start the trek back into the 90-degree days of summer. Take care, Mr. JT. You are on the precipice of 200k subscribers, then on and up!!

I was very pleased to see the Hamilton crossovers. They were and still are special. I first thought... well, the construction was not-so-great... a lot of noise. Then someone told me how the crossovers were a Big Deal, and I could probably also read about this in The Hamilon Gazette. Gracias por tu video, Señor Jaws. RT sends, Puebla, México.

Hey Jaw Tooth! Great video today! That first train, talk about emptying the yard. Nice 'Live action'. Wow! No DPU. The horn on the UP lead sounds different that the NS ones. That local was real short. Running LHF was cool. Love to see Chessie and Norfie playing! Thanks again Jaw Tooth for braving the elements to bring us all the 'Live Action'. Stay warm!

Shiny and new. Old and battered. Class 1. Shortlines. Leasers. Like the song Carwash. Work and work but those cars just keep on coming. At least today they moved right on through and didn't block The Crossing. The Dupp ducks looked forlorn and look like they could use a depot. Button up. Winter is here!

How do railroads decide who gets to use which tracks? How does it work with mixed locomotives like a train with Norfolk and Southern locomotives combined with BN&SF? Seems like CSX does fewer trains with combined locomotives.
@davidbarnett9312
@davidbarnett9312 Жыл бұрын
It's called power sharing. Engines sometimes are left as part of a train as it moves from a particular engine's home rail to 'foreign rail'. Same goes for railroads having 'right of way' on other railroad tracks. Back in the long ago [late 60's], the Missouri Pacific shared our track [Southern Pacific] from Bryan, Tx to Navasota, Tx. That's about a 20-mile trip by rail. At Navasota, the MoP then entered their own line for Houston and vice versa leaving Houston. The Rock Island also served Houston. A derailment on their line had them use our line from Houston to somewhere in North Texas where they could rejoin their own home rails.
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 Жыл бұрын
"How do railroads decide who gets to use which tracks?" Each line is owned by a particular railroad. They make agreements with each other to allow access to some parts of their trackage. Sometimes those are voluntary; sometimes they're imposed by the government as a condition of allowing railroad mergers, to avoid one railroad having a monopoly on an important route. "How does it work with mixed locomotives like a train with Norfolk and Southern locomotives combined with BN&SF?" Again, agreements between railroads. If a railroad uses another's locomotives, they pay a fee. Check out Danny Harmon's "Distant Signal" channel on KZbin and look for his video on foreign power for more information. By the way, it's Norfolk Southern and BNSF -- no "and" in either. Perhaps you're thinking of the earlier Norfolk and Western, and AT&SF.

With your radar gun and a stopwatch you could determine the length of a train: length (mi) = speed (mi/hr) × time (hr). A stat that would be interesting to know. Don't forget to correct your radar gun reading by the cosine of the angle the gun is aimed relative to the track, and to convert your stopwatch reading (minutes or seconds) to hours.

A Grand Trunk Western box without the CN [Canadian National] logo. Call me old fashioned, but these extremely long monster trains don't cut it. In my day, a hundred cars plus power and caboose were the norm. If something went wrong, there was the head and rear brakeman and conductor to take care of broken knuckles, air hose that burst, or the worst of the worst an out-of-control hot box. Yeah, been there done that outside of Navasota, Tx, but that's another story. The monster trains block all the crossings in small towns for ten-15-20 minutes or more thus prohibiting emergency response teams for doing their job. Now that the train crew consists of a conductor and engineer, it's the conductor that has to traverse the monster train to locate the problem and fix it. Air hose and wrenches or knuckles are not light weight. From what I've seen in Europe, although the freights are much smaller, there is only the train driver to take care of any problems with the train. In other news, the Cali police arrested some twenty people for stealing eighteen million dollars' worth of goods from module containers.

I noticed in the 2nd train, several empty spline cars & empty deep wells. Then more loaded tank cars, and other freight. Seems like an accident waiting to happen. Even us Model Railroaders know, if you have cars that weigh less than others, you run them at the rear, because there more prone to derail around curves! Both NS, and CSX had trains derail at Horseshoe Curve, and Fostoria, Ohio, several years ago, because of empty cars at the front, or middle of 14K + foot long trains. Nice videos JT! Stay warm! You said it would be cool to get that green car in HO. It is sorta possible. Check the listing in Walthers for the “airslide” they make the car but I don’t know if they make that paint scheme or not. The airslide car that was really cool was the demonstrators it was a two car set with drawbars between them. They were light blue and the last panel was dark blue with the word airslide vertical. I do know they did make that one but it has been awhile. Steven Sipes
