How i loved riding in box cars when I was younger. The train would stop in my town and we would find a box car with maybe lots of cardboard inside for padding. We would go for days not knowing where we were going. Then we would get out, we would not know where we were then after finding out we would hitchhike home. This was in the 60s. Great memories.,

My favorite car is the type that saved my life many years ago: the empty flatcar, whether it’s a bulkhead or centerbeam, or *just* a flatcar. I was driving late at night, approaching a crossing that is heavily wooded on both sides. No lights flashing, gates were up, so I was going to drive right through. Suddenly out of the darkness, I see a street light illuminating the intersection just beyond, then it disappeared. I hit the brakes and narrowly avoided driving into the side of a train booking through at ~45 mph or so. If those 2-3 flats hadn’t been there then, I wouldn’t be here now. This was long before conspicuity tape, before blue plates at the crossing, before everyone had a cell phone. I drove to a pay phone and dialed 0 for operator because we didn’t have 911 yet.

It happened to me too! It was around 4 am and the crossing guard lights were not flashing. I was in a hurry, but something didn’t look right. Then a flat bed went by, and miraculously; I could see up the hill. My knees were shaking so bad, I had to get out and walk around for a minute. This crossing was in the boondocks, but my neighbor had his porch light on-(the only other person in about 50,000 acres) one light away from death. I miss the caboose!

I come from a railroading family. My father worked in San Francisco, my grandfather on the cable cars and local trains in San Francisco. My great grandfather and his brother worked on the St Lousi & San Francisco RR "The Frisco". and my great great grandfather worked on trains, but the family did not remember which company. My favorite cars.... heck, ALL of them! But I guess if I had to choose, it'd be flatcars when loaded with interesting stuff! Tarp-covered shapes and heavy equipment. BEST ever, was watching a huge heavy back-hoe type machine load itself onto and off of a flatcar! The operator used the scoop at one end, to plant on the ground, and then the scoop at the other end to "step" onto the car and lift itself up! Reversed the process to get itself off the train. Astonishing!
