Holy crap! That was so much work, skewering and sanding. You said you were going to do it again on the new layout so maybe there is a better way. Maybe work in smaller areas so it won’t all be dry by the time you finish pouring. Maybe do between the rails first and work that area with a truck or shape a putty knife to match the profile you want between the rails or build a jig with trucks screwed to the bottom side of a screed if you want to work a bigger area so you can clear the inside of the rails as you apply the plaster or shortly after. Great idea with the 10 mm aluminum rails and it looks awesome. Can’t wait to see how you finish it. I love that you just go for it and see how it goes and it ALWAYS comes out great.

Derek i know this looks like a lot off work, but to do it all in one hit was better than trying to do this in small areas. But next time i would make sure that the top off the rails are showing but the outcome looked pretty good cheers Robert

Nice work Robert!! My foray into plastering was a disaster but I used drywall mud and not plaster. I will give your technique a shot for my next concrete project. Thanks for posting!!
@csxmad10 жыл бұрын
brian102256 Brian the only problem with using plaster is all the dust, other than that it was ok cheers Robert

Robert, You need to find and old Tyco Boxcar from the 1970's, the ones with the over sized flanges and a small bucket of warm water. When the plaster starts to setup, run the boxcar back and forth on the rails to create flange ways. Be sure to swish the boxcar from time to time in the bucket of water to keep the plaster cleaned off the wheels. With this method, you will not have to spend as much time manually cleaning out the flange ways with your pick. Very nice pour and I'm looking forward to seeing the finished lot after painting. Cheers, Rich S.

RWSBaden Rich S i had an old box car and tried to run it on the rails but the plaster was to dry by the time i poured the plaster, this plaster drys in about 5 minutes and it took me 5 minutes to level out cheers Robert

BRILLIANT Robert! The use of 10mm "gates" made of aluminium, is a GREAT idea!! It has no *give* , therefore MUST produce perfectly flat paving.... Good thinking! I need to remember that. :D

Nice Work Rob, just a tip to make clean up easier the tracks that are next to the area you put the plaster on it would of been best to put tape over them. As others have mentioned liked the idea of using the 10mm aluminium guides.

OMG, that would drive my ocd of the deep end. Great job on the plastering. Great idea to use guides for leveling the plaster. I use styrene so I don't have to clean out the rails as much but I don't think it would work with such long tracks since there would be nothing to hold it in place with. Scott
@csxmad10 жыл бұрын
Scott Downey Thanks Scott and the beams worked out really good and plastering isn't that bad except for the dust, took me about eight hours to clean up cheers Robert
@ScottDowneywoundedbear10 жыл бұрын
8 hours, holy crap. When I did mudding for a bit I hated the sanding part. So made sure you put on right so there was less sanding. I try to avoid mud on my layout when ever possible but that never really happens. Scott
