This is absolutely amazing. As a child growing up in Chicago, I remember when the operator was only in their area and then there was a seat by the front window. I used to make sure I got that seat so I can watch views like this.

Definitely the most interesting line in all of CTA. Love the neighborhoody feel, all the twists and turns and how it goes from ground level to elevated. There are some great neighborhoods along this line, including mine by the Southport stop.

Chicago winters have been incredibly mild in past few decades, and don’t get the NEasters that hit NY area. Places like Chicago, Milwaukee and Minneapolis handle snow removal and storms much better. Though Chicago’s nickname of Windy City has nothing to do with the weather or atmospheric wind, there are times when strong winds in very cold hit you.

Meanwhile, it's the middle of Summer here in Australia and I'm watching videos of the L in snow as escapism. I would love to know what -20c feels like; that's -4F for you Americans. I can't even imagine what trying to drive must be like in that kind of weather. You'd need nerves of steel and some serious skills to get behind the wheel with that much snow on the road.
@DerekDtj
@DerekDtj 3 жыл бұрын
I spent two wintahs in Northern Maine running a USAF radar site. The mean temp for January was a cool -39 degrees (without the chill factor!). We had a 35 mile drive to the site early each morning, and NEVER missed a day of work, believe it or not! Having REAL snow removal equipment is the answer. You Aussies don't know what you've been missing!!

We've had a pretty rough winter (at this point it wasn't that bad, we got 21+ inches of snow one weekend), and with AWD on my car it wasn't too bad. I turned off traction control by accident once -- don't recommend doing that. Only the alleys (were the parking often is) were really bad since they don't get plowed by the city. Lots of cardboard, floor mats, sand and pushing to get cars out. Also: we got to -22F last winter. Come on down and visit in February sometime :P
@OnTheRocks71
@OnTheRocks71 3 жыл бұрын
Driving in a lot of snow is just something you get accustomed to after a while, especially if you're familiar with your car and can gauge how much traction is available. AWD and snow tires help tremendously, but they're luxuries I've never used in Michigan.

It rarely ever gets down to -4F/-20C here. Our climate is much further south than people realize. What makes it so "cold" for the latitude were at is the central planes of Canada allowing Arctic air to spew down all the way to the gulf of Mexico. This is why Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama get way more snow and cold spells than anywhere in Florida or Georgia, other mid Atlantic states as they have no natural barrier to the constant flow of cold Fronts. Same here in Chicago. (i.e., Texas winter storm crisis of last year) At the same time, our winters _and_ summers are moderated by the adiabatic latent heat sink of Lake Michigan. It is the size of a small sea, and warms Chicago up by anywhere from 10 to sometimes 20 degrees from the surrounding regions. The lake effect stretches out for a significant distance too. That said, our winters are between 20-30F in the dead of winter. When severe polar vortex fronts hit from Canada, only then do we see crazy temps like -4F, and I remember a few years ago we had a record breaking -18F. Whoever is saying -22 is referring to suburbs further out and further north, though still technically part of Chicagoland. We typically experience temperatures like that maybe 1-2, _maybe_ 3-4 nights a year. That was an incredible cold, and I hope to never experience that again. Trust me, 30F is more than cool enough to satisfy the midsummer heat woes. I am currently catching myself longing for winter as this last week we've had 95-100F almost every day and 100 percent humidity. I know though, that the minute winter hits, I'll be begging for summer heat to be back. As for the snow, it varies wildly from year to year and I suspect it cycles and is dependant on the El Nino / La Nina cycles. The "coldness" of our winters here vary wildly too, and I believe the same mechanics are at play that affect that. Note that warmer winters are actually more conducive to snow, and this past winter was no exception - it was much warmer than average and we got absolutely dumped on during the month of February. So yeah, PSA. Chicago is not a frozen tundra like people would have you think. It really annoys me when people say that despite real "winter" only lasting during January and February. People need to go to like Maine or Minnesota or something, or perhaps Winnipeg in Canada / Fairbanks Alaska to experience true cold. Ain't nothing noteworthy about our winters here. If I were to warn you about anything regarding Chicago's weather is the pretty much annual severe heat waves we get with triple digit temps and extreme humidity and the severe weather we get (tornadoes). Chicago's weather is pretty extreme in the sense that its range is incredible. It is a wonderful, world class city. I hope you make a trip to visit here some day. I myself have Australia on the bucket list of places to visit. Oh and one last thing, people who swear by AWD don't know how to drive. I make do with a FWD hatchback just fine, as do millions of others in the region.

CTA really makes me want o visit Chicago during the winter. I absolutely love watching these videos. CTA has some top notch PR on this channel and they're making improvements to the system. @kristainviayoutube500

The electricity carried through the third rail and into the train gets dispersed back onto the actual track (since every electrical circuit must loop somehow in order to function) so the wheels of the train basically warm up the tracks while passing over. But on heavy snowy days CTA or whatever rail company runs modified snow plow trains.

Folks love snow, enjoying the ride home after a days work or whatever. The glimpse into the homes, lit up, folks home and cosy , settling down for the evening. Won't be long till all the passengers get to their own. And the motorman. Makes this video, "a ride home to your loved ones ". Just my opinion, but I'm in the UK what do I know🤔. 15:56 Yeah, but too bad its gonna bankrupt the state to pay for it...just so brown-line northbound passengers (and southbound red-line passengers) can save 2 minutes.

@@michaelbrinkers1145 they wouldn’t do a project like that just for fun. According to the about page, the current junction capacity is 40-44 trains per hour. From data between 2008 to 2014, they project the need for around 60 trains per hour in 2030. Population increase causes a definite need for infrastructure improvement. According to the about page, they are getting funds from many places; however, to my knowledge, none of them are from the state of Illinois. You can find the same information here: www.transitchicago.com/rpm/about

@@abcrtzyn Thanks for the data. It's just that for the 40 years I"ve used the red line (north of Fullertion), ridership is so crowded, and movement so SLOW....and capital improvements, except for station remodeling, never goes to "operation". Track work is incessant. Orange line, blue line (extension to Ohare), Green line (new stations at Damen, McCormick Pl, Morgan)....nothing ever for the north branch of the Red Line!!!!! And the purple line express used to be non-stop from Mdse Mart to Howard. Every other line gets better except the north Red Line!!!!

The beginning of the video says it's 1/21/21 at 5:30pm which was rush hour on a Thursday. The northbound trains and loop platforms should be jammed with commuters. It is snowing but by the looks of the alleys and parked cars there's not a lot of fresh snow. Having lived in Chicago, riding the el and buses for four years of school, it would take a lot more snow than that before businesses would consider closing early. I thought about reduced ridership due to Covid but if the numbers were as low as this video indicates, I doubt they'd have that many cars on the trains. It would just be more for them to clean and sanitize.

Using logic based on the fact that the Pandemic is still ongoing (as of 5/16/2022 as I'm writing this), there may be less riders because of the Pandemic and the snow, which would result in fewer travelers under normal circumstances. Thankfully in Chicago, the CTA never considered reducing train service as any time (unlike my hometown of New York City, which shockingly closed the entire subway system from May 2020 until June 2021).

Growing up, we had a good view of the Jarvis L Station from our living room windows. I miss the old days, when each train had both a motorman and a conductor. The train conductor would have some fun calling out the station names on the PA speakers. "Argyle" was always a good one. ;-)

I just love to watch these! You know what will be more interesting? If we can have those automated in train announcement added on these videos. In real time with station we can also listen train stations, doors closing, etc. CTA Connections is it something you can do it?

Another great ride. Keep them coming, CTA. Especially the night rides. Btw, I haven't seen snow since I left NY almost 40 years ago. I'm really enjoying riding through this beautiful classic snowstorm in Chicago. Oh, no! What do I see dead ahead of me? Trump's Chicago building. With all the legal and financial trouble he's in right now, that name may be coming down real soon.

It was strictly a branding deal for Trump as were most of his 1990's/early 2000's named buildings. His company may have a piece of that Chicago building but if so, it's a minority share. The Press say the financing of that building is a small part of the ongoing inquiry into his finances and taxes.
