CT if I may, sand blasting is not the answer to everything. I took my VW pan down to nothing like you power washed it inside and out and even the tunnel. Then I sprayed the hell of the inside of the tunnel with WD40. I then went over the outside with a wire wheel on my drill and sprayed Eastwoods rust encapsulator black and it turned out amazing and has held up to everything. It's easy, time affection and affordable. Wish I could send a pic.

When taking tour master cylinder out there are two metal spacers inside the firewall that help stiffen the area so that it doesn’t crush with the master cylinder fasteners. Try to keep them in place; if not they get lost in between the two metal layers. Master cylinder is Ate/Girling. Looks original.
@CTmoog3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! I will look for those. I didn't know that. What are your thoughts on making access holes?
@vayabroder7293 жыл бұрын
@@CTmoog You can always get new spacers if you lose them; I believe they sell them new. In that area if you make an access hole just make it temporary and patch it back, being that it’s a structural part. By the way when putting back the shift rod make sure you put a new shift rod bushing inside the tunnel; it fits in a little bracket under the shifter area. Now is the best time to do that. Also you can spray that green Eastwood frame coating inside that tunnel before putting it back together. It comes with a nice applicator; Mike Fn and I believe Mustie1 have used it. Now I realize you asked about the access hole for the pedals; that is a pretty common thing that is done; not the end of the world but I have managed to install all my cables on the pedal cluster without it.
@CTmoog3 жыл бұрын
@@vayabroder729 ok cool! That is good info. I think I will make 2 or 3 access holes "squares" so I can get in these with the sand blaster and weld them back. It's pretty nasty in there.

Mike, what are your thoughts on cutting access holes in the tunnel for sand blasting?
@Mikefngarage3 жыл бұрын
@@CTmoog never sand blasted Inside the tunnel. Never seen it done either. They do have some rust issues. but rarely. and usually what happens is the clutch tube breaks off the tunnel. Then I cut an access hole to re weld it. I cut a flap bend it down weld inside then push the flap back up and weld up the cut. Unfortunately you usually dont know it is broken till you try to drive it. Had to do my Rag top after the interior was in. This is typical. no big deal.
@Mikefngarage3 жыл бұрын
@@CTmoog hey you could use your power washer and spray inside the holes. Front access, shifter hole, pedal holes and shift coupler hole and clean out the debris. then let it dry out for a few days then pour heavy rusted metal primer in there tip it around a bit. That should be more than good enough.
@Mikefngarage3 жыл бұрын
@@CTmoog first shove your vacuum hose in there and get everything you can out of there. The heavy rusted metal primer should hold it out for more than 20 years. probably a lifetime. that stuff really works and seals pretty good from future rust. Usually no water ever gets in there unless you dont have the cover on the front, or the car sits in the dirt for several years.
@robertlambert52993 жыл бұрын
Do your research! Cut access holes and weld the clutch tube in its mounting tabs again. If they’re not broken, weld them again anyway. Should be 3 places. 1 at the front 1 in the middle just past the shifter or e-brake and 1at the rear. If I remember correctly all are accessible from the right side. Weld the access holes up when done. Pressure wash the tunnel if needed and stand the pan up to dry it out for a few days. Look at Eastwood to find spray wands to shoot a coating inside the tunnel if needed. Again do your research….Clean all the tubes out also and the fuel tube fill up it with Evapo-rust (tractor supply) to clean any rust inside the tube. Oat the inside of the fuel tube with some lube (wd40) til it’s time to run fuel through it otherwise it’s gonna rust again inside. OH AND DUCT TAPE THE TUBE ENDS so no sand gets into them when blasting.
