Good talk, I'm in that "early but growing" stage with my startup and I think this guy brings some solid advise to the table, without the fluff.

It's so much matching to what I see in our company at the moment. Exact size-range and exact options to choose your path moving forward...

I feel like what you described is more like a Head of Engineering. CTO is more about integrating business requirements into, into planning, team building, culture, and mentoring. You want to maximize outcomes and minimize inputs. You are the voice of reason on why your heading that direction. The company makes its bet on you that the direction you're taking will be faster, higher quality, and can sustain the companies vision into the future and beat the competition, like a coach of a sports team.

CTO is such a stressful job. Staff hacking, managing expectations idk... there's so much. What I find is that the job becomes 10x more stressful when you have real customers and you now have to worry about data migration, security and scaling with staff + preventing turn over

Clearly I need to increase my “uhh” frequency if I want to be a CTO.
