I own the Cub as well and it has never cut like that. One thing I must say is if you look at the blades of each at 7:21 and 13:52 you can see the Cub blades are much more worn than the Toro. I was hoping for a fairer test as I love my Cub but was looking into another mower. Honestly after hearing the Toro bog down I'll hang onto my Cub a little longer. The Cub has NEVER been short on power.

I have the Craftsman version of that Cub cadet mower and it is going on 13 years old. There is no way I would try to mulch grass that high. Instead I remove the mulch plug, mow the grass and then reinstall the mulch plug and mulch the clippings with excellent results. Of coarse I try to keep up with the grass so it doesn't get so long that I have to cut it twice.

I have a 7 year old Craftsman that looks very similar to the Cub Cadet but with battery for electric start, and an oil filter. Mine is 33 inch, 420cc, 13-15 HP and goes like a bat-out-of-hell. It has the big tires like the Cadet and it climbs a 30 degree hill effortlessly even though they only rate it for a 15 degree hill. My understanding is there are two types of systems used in most small engines: splash lubrication and forced oil lubrication. I assume with an oil filter the engine has an oil pump ("forced oil lubrication" which would be necessary to get lubrication on steep hills.

Agree with your test. My CC Rzt zero turn is a damn good mower. The 33 walk behind is junk. Bag chute clogs almost every pass. Leaves clippings everywhere, unless you weight the back of bag. Gave mine away and bought a Wright Stander, haven't looked back.

Toro Timemaster is a beast, I use it professionaly for years without any breakdowns except regular sharpening the blades, changing the oil, etc.. I know Timemaster isn't a professional machine, his brother Turfmaster is a pro machine but guys I'm using it every day during the season and it works perfectly. Sure, it has a lot of plastic parts that are all metal on the Turfmaster but I take care of my equipment and no trouble there. They also say that the Turmaster has a pro engine.. Yeah right... Never had any problems with my B&S on Timemaster. Last but not the least it's much lighter.. So I fully recommend Toro Timemaster or if you need a 22" mower than there's nothing out there that beats Honda HRX series with plastic deck...

are your blades sharp are they deformed or bent it make`s a difference in cutting how high or low makes difference also. mulching tall grass is hard on machines period. you can change your blade configuration to cut the grass up to get more fine pieces. but most mowers are better at side discharging.

To anyone interested...definitely buy the Toro over the cub cadet. After about 100 hours the cub cadet starts falling apart! I had numerous cables snap, the deck broke off from the brackets and the frame crack! I purchased the Toro after and it has been so much better in terms of reliability! It also performs much better on hills. I would not recommend the CC to anyone.

I owned that 33 inch wide cut mower and it always did suck at cutting. I ended up selling it for $1000 so I got my money back. The Toro Timemaster needs a larger engine. I hear the thing bogging down as your coming forward. If the time master had a larger engine it would probably be descent. The design of the cub cadet, which is MTD and also made them for sears just had a terrible blade design. Its a twin blade and the blade turn opposite of each other, if it had a 3rd blade and they had synced it correctly it probably would have been a good mower, but they were just designed poorly, they both were, one needs a bigger engine the other needs a better blade setup. I don't like either, the one I know from experience. That's my opinion.

This is a really old video and at that time the cub had a lot of hours on it so it was already an older mower then. So I am sure they are different mowers now. The timemasters now have a larger engine. I now use Turfmasters however that is because of the amount of hours they get on them in a season ( around 200) and I like the added durability of the commercial upgrades

Update: I loved the Toro when I first got it, and this video is what convinced me to buy it. But here is what I don't like. Having lived in Texas, I use to love to mulch. But now I live in the northeast, where the grass is wet from dew, often well after noon, when side discharging is the preferred method. And even then, because it's primarily a mulching mower with two blades spinning in opposite directions, it keeps the grass under the deck, and then clogs up in the discharge opening. And the mower will bog down in wet grass even if it's not to long. The ideal commercial mower for wet/tall conditions is one that will get the grass out from under the deck so as not to bog down. If all your lawns are dry and short, then the Toro is great, and well worth the money for the 40% extra cutting width. But mulching mowers are not made to cut high or wet grass. I don't know if they even make a single blade, self-propelled, rear wheel drive, with a large side discharge opening. But if they do, I'll be buying it real soon, or I'll enlarge an opening myself. One that's a bit lighter then the Toro which can wear you down if cutting in close quarters and ditches. Does anyone have a suggestion on a mower that is powerful enough to side discharge tall wet grass?

I'm glad I just watched this video. I have about 7 or 8 yards with a Torro Timemaster, and while I love the cut and the deck width, I've been unsatisfied with the power and its lack of maneuverability. Just a slight incline will make you think you're using your dads old mower from 1985. But after watching this video it looks like I made the best choice.

B Brown I just bought the Timemaster. I'm loving it so far. But I keep running out of gas. My Exmark with 7 gallons has me spoiled. I tried mulching foot high grass, and it couldn't do it. And really slows down when wet grass gets stuck up under the deck. But when the grass is normal height, it does a fantastic job. It is a bit heavy in close quarters, but man is it fast.

Steven L Why do you like high lift blades better then gators? I just did a test and found that it didn't look as good a week later, with the grass that was left on top being much longer then with the mulching blades, so I put the gators back on.
@JesusIsaFlatEarther
@JesusIsaFlatEarther 8 жыл бұрын
B Brown As far as lack of power, I found I needed to tighten my blade engage and the rpm's came up. I first tested it by pulling up on the cable by my hands to see what it did, and that brought the rpm's/power up. Now mine is working much better in thick grass then it was. The cable runs to the front of the engine up under the pulley cover, which just has four screws that hold it in place.

Beginning 2017, the TimeMaster and near-equally-equipped TurfMaster and near-equally-equipped ExMark30 all have a new, larger engine; a 223 cc B&S motor to replace the outgoing model shown here that has a 190 cc. The performance upgrade is +1 1/4 ft-lb torque. From 8 3/4 to 10 ft-lb. Reviews of the 190 cc TimeMaster often include an underpowered complaint that is not ever mentioned in any of the reviews of the new model with the larger engine; however, almost every single review of the newer model states that the gas tank is too small and run time on a tank of gas is only about 30 minutes, which for me, that's a deal breaker on a mower that's supposed to save time over an engine that's slightly underpowered. It takes me about 45 minutes to mow my 1/2-acre with lots of obstacles; and my mower will just barely make it on a tank of gas and just a little time to blow off the driveway. I own a TimeMaster with the 190 cc, and mine bogs down in anything close to being considered tall, wet or thick grass; and that's in it's best mode, which is with the mulch plate bungy-corded up to create a wide open side opening, and the side chute removed. In mulch mode, it's almost worthless unless you're mowing very short and dry grass, because in any other scenario, the engine will not keep running without slowing way down to a crawl and it gets slower the longer you mulch as the grass underneath the deck continues to build up. And remember, the name of this mower is TimeMaster. With the side chute on, it does pretty well but you still have to slow down in average grown grass after the month of June in the southeast and in thick grass the opening will periodically clog up turning it in to mulch mode. The TimeMaster does very well with the bag attached and it's removed and installed very easily. It will vacuum up dry dead grass and leavers very well and it comes with the bag and removable rear chute. I've also got a back-up mower; a very cheap 21" Weedeater push mower with a 5 1/4 ft-lb torque that has dull blades, and that mower can be pushed faster in thick grass at the same cutting height than my TimeMaster without bogging down. It does not, however, cut nearly as well quality as the TimeMaster even if it had sharp blades, but this $175 mower has more engine power relative to the blade spin than the $1,000 TimeMaster. Now for the good news: The TimeMaster is a dream to mow with. Personal Pace is the best propulsion system out there. So intuitive; so easy to use; very low profile for it's width for going under trees and large shubbery; great trimming mower, because the deck is as wide as the wheels, which means it'll cut right up against a fence better than any mower I've ever used, and it does not leave much uncut area to it's front considering it's size (8 inches); and so the TimeMaster is very productive for cutting large lawns, yet compact enough to cut just about anywhere that a 21-22 will cut, enhanced by the fact that one can lift and lock the handle up to 90 degrees very quickly and easily for very tight spots. The mower also cuts very well and is amazingly nimble for it's size and the 30" swath is very nice. In order to take the TimeMaster from a good mower to a great mower, especially considering it's $1,000 price; what Toro needed was to up the engine size just a tad, as they have done, so that it doesn't bog down too easily, but Toro and B&S should have ensured that the run time with the blades turning was at least an hour. So the B&S 223 needs a tank at least 80% larger. That would have fixed two weaknesses of this mower, but what they did instead was fix one weakness and make the other weakness worse to the point of unacceptable. The TimeMaster also needs more durable pulley's and belts, as I had a pulley go bad in my fourth season mowing only one 1/2 lawn; and this is a very common complaint with the mower; and it needs a side opening that's larger so that the mower can expunge grass as quickly as it cuts it; it would therefore need a corresponding larger chute ; and it needs a system whereby the chute can be flipped up while attached, instead of having to remove or install the chute when needed, which is a hassle. As for the mulching weakness; I'm not sure this can be fixed in such a compact mower with a 30" wide deck. It would have to include a longer deck to deal with all the cut grass, but then it wouldn't be the same sort of great compact, wide-cut mower. There is currently three MTD-made 28" mowers that have now been on the market almost a couple of years that compete directly with the TimeMaster (Craftsman, Troybilt, and Cub Cadet) that are more of a direct competitor to the TimeMaster than the CC 33" or the Troybilt 33" cut or the Craftsman 33" cut. These 28" mowers also use a pace SP system to copy Toro's Personal Pace, but the MTD version requires pushing downward, instead of forward on the handle. I've not tried one, but watching videos and just thinking about how such a system would work in comparison, I don't think it would be nearly as good; not even close. I've also read where the MTD versions have a slower, possibly unacceptable top speed with their SP system. The TimeMaster is pretty quick when you push full ahead, and that's part of what makes it a TimeMaster; slower would be unacceptable for me. The front wheels on the MTD versions are not equal distance from the deck, because on the MTDs, the deck is cocked sideways a tad; the left side is very close in towards the deck like the TimeMaster, but the right side is much farther forward, and so it will not cut as close to a fence or structure to the front as the TimeMaster. I know that at least the Craftsman has the same B&S 223 cc engine and the same gas tank and the same complaint as the newest TimeMaster. I believe at least one of the MTD models has a Chinese B&S knock-off brand engine instead of the Briggs 223 cc. Feature-for-feature, the three MTD brands can save from $100-$150 compared to the TimeMaster; but I just don't know if the larger swath concept would even be worth it with respect to the MTD models due to the pitfalls listed above. I don't think the 33" CC or TB or Craftman are worth the $1,200 considering their drawbacks unless one is mowing a large lawn with few obstacles. There is also a WorldLawn 32", but it starts at $1,800, but it too has a higher profile and so really, the TimeMaster and the trio of MTDs are the only mowers wider than 22" that are designed pretty much like a 22" inch. If Toro or MTD would address a few minor issues, they'd be a great concept of a mower for an acceptable price premium. I paid around $840 for my TimeMaster, because I waited for a deal and then I applied for a Home Depot card and saved 10% on my first purchased. I then turned right around and paid off the card and cut it up. I think I got my moneys' worth in my TimeMaster, but if I'd paid $1,000; I'm not so sure; I'm also skeptical about paying $1,200 for a 33" MTD mower; or $1800 for a WorldLawn; or $850-$1,000 for a 28" MTD; but have carefully considered all of them for my next mower.

The walk behind mower he has( cub cadet) is very awkward to use if you have previously used commercial walk behind mowers. On a commercial mower, the levers are underneith and if you release you still hold a firm grip on the mower bars. These Cub/Craftsman 33" have the levers ontop of the bars, in which to release the blades or let off the drive clutch to turn around you are literally taking your hand off the bars. For this reason i do not like the 33" with this style drive.

I do prefer the Toro over the cub, however it really depends on what your gonna use it for? If you have lots of steep hills that are going to need work then the cub is an excellent hill climber. I own both the timemaster and the cub cadet also. I bought a set of gator blades for the cub cadet after your video you posted at the beginning of the summer. I used them for a few weeks, then went back to the high lift blades. I feel the high lift blades do a better job than the gators. +Billy Goat Yeah wet grass can really clog up under the time master when mulching, I don't really have problems if I just bag it when its wet. So you like the high lifts better than the gators? I don't know whether the Toro or Cub Cadet is better, but the belts are too lose to cut anything on that Cub. You say the blades keep "stopping," that is cause the belts are worn out or simply need adjusting. This comparison is fruitless cause the Cub is not functioning properly.
@BirchsLawnCareLLC
@BirchsLawnCareLLC 5 жыл бұрын
Actually the blades where stopping because grass gets bunched up between the deck and the blade gap and then causes belt glazing, this can happen with any mower when put into too thick of a grass which it can't handle properly. I would love to do a new video of these but I haven't owned a cub cadet in a few years. But feel free to post your own video of your timemaster and your cub cadet. Thanks for watching
@mrpotatoheadracing
@mrpotatoheadracing 5 жыл бұрын
@@BirchsLawnCareLLC Dude, if the blades are stopping, for any reason, on any mower, when under a load, and does not stall the engine, there is a problem. Your belt needed adjusting, or was worn to the point it couldn't be adjusted. Belts are not designed to start smoking and slipping when under a load as you described in your video.
@BirchsLawnCareLLC
@BirchsLawnCareLLC 5 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct, they where slipping because they had been glazed already. It was a continual problem with this mower, yes new belts would kill the mower but eventually they get glazed and slipped. it wasn't an adjustment issue I was just tired of this mower having issues like this way to often. I understand what you are saying. now though both of these mowers come with stronger engines so I am sure they both handle over grown grass better.

Seems like a waste of time. Anyone who neglects their lawn that badly could care less about which mower is better. And seeing how a mower works when being abused by trying to get it to cut and mulch too much in a single pass, is worthless. What matters is how does a mower work under normal conditions? Cutting 1/3 the grass height at normal speed. Any lawn that overgrown should not be mulched. It should be bagged. Better for the lawn and much better and easier on the mower. Better yet, side discharge, rake and pick it up, so you don't have to empty the bag every 5 feet. lol
@BirchsLawnCareLLC
@BirchsLawnCareLLC 6 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct however if you would have taken the time to listen to the video you would have noticed I said I let it grow this tall on purpose for this video. As someone who does this for a living and main audience is other guys starting up they appreciate knowing how a mower works in adverse conditions, because if a homeowner kept a lawn in pristine condition they would have no need for a lawn guy. Could have saved your self some typing. but thanks you for your time.

First off, you are comparing a 190cc engine (toro) to a 420cc engine. Secondly, I own the CC 33". I was going to buy a riding, but the wife wanted something to exercise with. Well she only had to use it once. Walked in and said sell that thing. It's a beast, and just trying to hold down the levers wore her wrists out quickly. I highly doubt anyone in the commercial business uses them much. Just get a riding mower if you are going to pony up 1300 bucks. I like CC mowers, but that thing is a dog. Mine is sitting in the shed permanently. I now use a 160 cc Honda push mower, and the wife is happy again. Honda mower always starts on the first pull as well. They know small engines.
