Brilliant! I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve taken a run at trying to understand Note Expression, only to be left in a confused puddle. Thanks MTT for presenting this so clearly and concisely. Gotta get to my studio!

To edit a note in NoteExpression you can simply double-click on the note with the Pencil(!) tool without making any further settings in Cubase.

just set the note expression to any CC you want, write some data, press MIDI LEARN. thats all you need to link the paramaters you want. you can also control FX if you use a MIDI channel and send it to the FX you want to control. i have a video on my channel. its from 9 years ago but nothing changed since cubase 6.5 also if you use MPE checkout the video about splitting PITCH to channels, MPE is super awesome.

The tuning feature looks ace for string instruments. I played around with this in 10.5, but it was only an experiment. Following your video, I'm now going to delve a little deeper into the benefits to make more realistic arrangements by setting slightly different curves per note. (Incidentally, I also have passive Tannoy Reveal monitors (were the active ones blue? Anyway, it's a long time ago, as I have had mine for over 20 years!😎)

in Cubase AI Note Expression is not showing up. Is there any workaround using CC10 for panning, I can select it below in the Key Editor, but I don't know how to set values for it.
@musictechtuition2 жыл бұрын
Hi Pablo. Note expression isn't present in AI (It's only in Pro and Artist). CC10 should work (depending on the plugin). 0 will pan to the left, 63 is centre and 127 is right, with values in between these ones representing smooth movement between the two. HTH.

What version of Cubase do you have? I'm almost certain that only Cubase 11 has the 'free draw' feature for midi as this was covered in the new online tutorials.

Hi, I've only just discovered your channel and its brilliant and have subscribed. I used to use Cubase back in the Atari days and have recently returned to writing music again. I was given Cubase 5 (i know it's old). However, my computer was too slow and couldn't keep up with my tracks, so I have bought a newer one. However, I don't know how to transfer my licence (USB dongle) to the new PC. Could you possibly advise how to do this?
@musictechtuition3 жыл бұрын
Hi. The licence itself will be on the USB dongle which you can just plug in and it'll be there (once you have elicenser installed) - it's the software installation of Cubase itself that may be an issue. I've not installed Cubase 5 on a modern PC, so it may or may not work. Given that it was around the time that Windows 7 was released, it may be OK, but unless you have the installer CD, it may be difficult to get an installer, as Steinberg now uses the download assistant rather than access to an FTP server where you can get any old version.
@AJJmusician3 жыл бұрын
@@musictechtuition Thank you so much for your reply! Yes, I have all the original CDs and software. When I installed it on the new PC it wouldn't acknowledge the USB, even though it was plugged in (tried all the USB slots too). I thought that maybe it had the 'old' PC's info stored on the USB and I, maybe, first needed to uninstall it from the old PC. When this was originally installed on my old Windows 7 PC, I didn't need to install any elicenser software. It just worked after installing Cubase and connecting the dongle. It still works on that PC (but struggles with large numbers of tracks).
@musictechtuition3 жыл бұрын
@@AJJmusician The elicenser software would have been installed as part of the Cubase installation - in the background so you may not even have known it was there. IF you install it from steinberg on your new PC and plug the USB dongle in, you'll see the Cubase licence present on the dongle - it's the dongle that's "licenced" rather than any PC, so you don't need to uninstall or anything like that. Without Elicencer installed, Windows doesn't know what the dongle is or how to read it. www.steinberg.net/en/company/technologies/elicenser/
@AJJmusician3 жыл бұрын
@@musictechtuition Thanks again! When I run Cubase, it says 'No elicenser connected' despite one being connected (it lights up red and is even shown in Device Manager). From the website you gave, I have downloaded the elicenser control centre and it doesn't show any licence. I have tried this with the new and 'older' version of this elicense software. However, if I go back to my old PC, this dongle works fine? Not really sure what else I can do?
@musictechtuition3 жыл бұрын
@@AJJmusician Not sure offhand - there is an answer (and the licence is *definitely* on the USB elicenser), but without seeing it, I can't really help any more - sorry.

Ah, what a shame... another interesting feature denied to us poor users of Cubase Elements.
@musictechtuition5 ай бұрын
I think they view it as a desirable feature, hence it being missing from Elements; they have to draw the line somewhere (or sell Pro for Elements money, essentially!)
@RebeccaTurner-ny1xx5 ай бұрын
@@musictechtuition Which I suspect they could do and still make a fair profit. I'm tempted to abandon Cubase and look at open source alternatives.
@musictechtuition5 ай бұрын
@@RebeccaTurner-ny1xx I doubt they would be making a profit; they are one of the few not to go subscription. It's been a long time since I've seriously looked at open source DAWs (and I'm thinking about spending some time in the near future seeing how they have progressed), but I'd be surprised if they were as feature-rich as any paid DAW as they are so complex and difficult to create.
@RebeccaTurner-ny1xx5 ай бұрын
@@musictechtuition Open source often means a huge number of programmers, mostly working on it because they want it to be great - and no-one is wasting coding time creating crippled versions which is an indictment of the for-profit model. Audacity, for example, has been developed into an excellent audio multitrack recorder with some features and an ease of use that put Cubase to shame. I'd never open Cubase to record audio alone.
