Cubital Tunnel Syndrome AKA Ulnar Nerve Entrapment is typically an overuse injury that occurs at the elbow from pressure on the Ulnar nerve. This is also know as Ulnar Nerve Entrapment. Although this is mostly an overuse injury, it can also happen from a direct blow to the "funny bone" causing inflammation around the ulnar nerve that passes through the cubital tunnel.

Recently had Carpal Tunnel Release surgery so my CT has been good for about a year, but the Cubital Tunnel Syndrome has eeeever so slightly been creeping its way up and being way more noticeable on my pinky. Thank you so much for these suggested stretches. I was in a sling for six weeks following rotator cuff repair. The ulnar nerve pain, finger numbness, and hand weakness is far more troublesome and mind consuming than recovery from the rotator cuff repair. I have a brace I’ve been wearing at night to keep my elbow straight and will start these stretches tomorrow. I am nine weeks post op and have full range of motion in my shoulder so should be able to perform everything you suggested. Thank you again for sharing your expertise.
@positivelyprogressing
@positivelyprogressing 2 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome! All of the stretches can be modified to whatever range of motion you have in your shoulder currently. If you have any discomfort from the surgery when trying to improve the nerve stuff just back off a little. Now that you're not in the sling it and as you get strength and range of motion back you should start steadily improving in regards of the nerve irritation. Take care and hope all the rehab goes well!

I'm so glad you made this video. Super insightful and helpful. I've been experiencing Cubital tunnel syndrome for 5 months now. Im a guitarist/pianist, skater and video editor so those have probably all contributed to it. Its starting to get worrying especially for the piano playing when doing thumb and pinky octaves with right hand. Also have less control when doing noodling without a pick. My surf rock band "Mr Koo" play a few live shows per month here in Hong Kong. Hopefully these nerve glides will help to improve the movement and give full feeling back to my right pinky. Thanks for the tips.

Hey Chris, I love the fact that you’re a physical therapist and a fellow musician. Subbed immediately! I’m pretty sure I have this as I have pain that comes and goes in my pinky and ring finger when I play guitar or even just hold my phone for a minute. I did some test where you press the nerve at the elbow and sure enough it activated the pain. Question: I sleep on my back on a wedge pillow at an incline for acid reflux, do you think because my elbows aren’t 100% flat I’m aggravating the nerve?
@positivelyprogressing
@positivelyprogressing 3 жыл бұрын
First off, thanks for the support! 😁 🙌 So you may be causing more pressure on the elbows by sleeping like that but ask yourself if there's a correlation to when you started sleeping this way and having symptoms. Could you be putting pressure on your elbows at different times of the day? Do you have any neck or back issues? If you want to setup a call I'm more than happy to chat and figure out how to help.

I just wanted to report back. I've been doing these exercises for about a month and I wasn't even able to play guitar anymore when I first started them because I was having that much of a problem with the cubital tunnel and ulnar nerve. So after a month of these basic exercises (making sure to not overdue them which is a huge mistake) and wearing an elbow splint I got off Amazon (brand was Reamphy) at night when sleeping has helped restore me to almost 100% but not quite..I can play guitar again though! I feel so much better, thank you.

Thanks a lot for making this video!! How often should I do these exercises a week and how long would you say it takes for mild symptoms to heal or get better after doing these exercises? I've been feeling tingling and some numbness in my pinky and ring finger for about 3 weeks now. Around week 2, the outer area of my elbow started to hurt a little whenever I tried to fully extend my arm. I'm wondering if it's tennis elbow with ulnar nerve entrapment? Thanks again!

I would suggest 1-2x/day as long as it doesn’t cause discomfort. Tennis elbow would be a different kind of discomfort and typically no numbness/tingling. Take care 😁🙌

I went to the doctors for this pain and I knew it was a combination of using my cell phone so much as well as sleeping on my right arm. Unfortunately the doctor just gave me some ibuprofen cream and said to put it on in the morning and then put cold pack on for 20 minutes. I stupidly helped a friend move by packing boxes for 10 hours straight. Then, I stupidly baked a sourdough bread for a couple weeks. This type of bread has to be worked with a lot of slapping pulling folding and handling cast Iron pots. After a few weeks my arm literally blew up from inflammation. I could barely feel my arm without excruciating pain and numbness. I finally forced myself to relax it and do a little bit of research on what exactly I have and now I feel like I jacked my arm up. I’ve had the tingling in my pinky and hand for years now from holding my phone constantly. It’s now finally caught up to me and I feel like a complete idiot. I’m going to try to avoid surgery and hope that I can one day use my right arm again. I really really need my right arm. By the way the exercise that you shared did help relieve some of the pain. I’m going to do it every day but I just don’t know how many times a day I should do it

First off, stop beating yourself up over it. What’s done is done and you stressing about it will not help you heal. Be kind to yourself, it sounds kind you’re a thoughtful friend and just worked it too much. Start the cream up again on a regular basis. Definitely change the way you sleep. Do exercises that feel good 1-2 times a day. Very light strengthening if you can tolerate, if not just hold off. If you need anymore help feel free to email me. 😁🙌 take care!

I have this cubital tunnel issue in my right elbow causing my middle finger to feel a little tingling but the worst part is my right little finger & that same side of my right hand. My little finger is extremely numb & so much so that if I'm typing on my PC keyboard I can't feel any keys that are typically activated using the little finger. I think your video is extremely helpful but I'm just getting started with the exercise routines but I can definitely feel the stretching of the ulnar nerve with each routine. I know that my primary issue is applying pressure on my elbow whenever I'm seated with my right elbow constantly resting on the sofa's armrest. I will soon be seeing a physician at the Mayo Clinic to help positively diagnose the issue & hopefully get me on the proper track towards healing. I will likely mention your beneficial online video. Thank you sharing your expertise. You are a gifted teacher. Since retiring from clinical psychology, I spent many hours composing music at a computer, my arm often resting on the edge of an acoustic guitar. The medial aspect of my upper arm has become tender. Gradually, the fingers became paretic: techniques like arpeggio an tremolo have become unsustainable. I notice also a significant reduction in right arm swing when walking. The mild essential tremor, exclusively in the RUE may be related. I am scheduled for an MRI and NCS. Apart from ceasing to insult the nerve and taking Meloxicam, what else might I do to speed up healing?

IN 2013, I started weight training at 16 years old, and developed a mild case of cubital tunnel. I remember not being able to play tennis, guitar or use a computer for about six months. I know it was probably anxiety contributing but I avoided any heavy lifting, and using that arm a lot. After 6 months, it was feeling better and I started playing guitar again. At the start of 2015, it was mostly gone, I was playing guitar and tennis and feeling good. IN 2017, I started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which I thought would aggrivate it, but I have been able to train BJJ for the last 2 years basically with 0 elbow issues. I would have occasional flare ups over the years for a day or 2 here and there, but would almost always be fine. I made sure I never rested my elbows on hard surfaces, slept with arm straight and have managed it well. Because the gym was what originally caused this, I have been extremely hesitant of ever returning. I returned 3 years ago but I only lasted 5 or 6 weeks because I was lazy and had no issues. Now, I have decided (at 23 years old) to start strength training to help with my martial art training. I have been weight lifting for about 7 or 8 weeks, and just in the last 3 days, my nerve has suddenly starting feeling tingly and just a bit off. I am literally feeling stressed/in tears because it is bringing back bad memories and anxiety and I don't know what to do. I know something is wrong because it feels slightly tingly and off when at my keyboard, which it never has since 2015, and just feels more sensitive and sore. From old MRI and physio, they say that it is just the area around it that is inflamed and not that actual inner layers of the nerve, but I am just so unsure what to do. Do I keep weight lifting and just see what happens? Do I get Nerve tests done? SHould I just get decompression surgery and be done with it? I really want to weight lift as well as do BJJ. I feel like if I stop the gym right now and rest my arm for a few weeks, this will go back to how it was and I can train BJJ, but I really do want to do weight lifting and get stronger, but I am worried I might screw up and not be able to do anything at all!
@positivelyprogressing
@positivelyprogressing 4 жыл бұрын
First, thank you for your comment and sharing all this info. Second, I don't think you need to stop lifting weights but you do need to figure out what is causing the flare up. One or more of the lifts you are doing is causing it because that is the change you have made recently causing the new sensation. I would start by making your workouts very simple for each body part. 2-3 exercises, not super heavy weight and see if your symptoms get better. It's going to be a lot of trial and error but it will allow you to figure out what movement is causing your issues. I think this will be a really good way to weight train and continue with BJJ without having discomfort. Please let me know if you have any more questions. Take care!

There’s a myofascial release, move to do to your hand and your arm. For carpal tunnel syndrome;where you Squeeze the hand and the forearm sliding down and holding the hand pretty firmly tight and keeping a firm grip as you slide all the way down towards the elbow. I had surgery on the cubital and carpal tunnels of my right arm and was told I need it on my left as well. I think the cubital surgery was a success, although I can’t feel my elbow. But most importantly, now I have trigger finger in my middle finger and I can’t fully flex the middle finger. Maybe from the carpal tunnel surgery. Heck, I don’t know. My arms are crap. By the way, after doing these exercises, my index and middle fingers of my left hand are numb. I think from hyperextending my left hand. I can deal with that, because my cubital pain is better and I think the finger numbness will dissipate.

My pinky finger feels a little weak and when I have my right hand flat in front of me and push from the side with my left hand I feel quite a lot of pain just underneath the pinky. I went to a physio a couple of months ago, he was telling me to bend my arm, hand in a range of positions and asked me if it hurt, which it didn’t. I’m not doing any exercises currently. However I’d like to mention that I’m still having something popping in and out of position near the inner part of my elbow. The physio said it may be a tendon but I think it could be the ulnar nerve. This popping has been here since the start of my injury.

My advice would be, if you have been doing everything the PT gave you and things are still not getting better, is to get a MRI done or go back to the original PT and see if she/he has any other hypotheses as to what is going on. Hope to hear that you are feeling better soon! With all that being said, try to think about what actions you are doing throughout the day that might be making your discomfort worse. We know what the initial injury was but there can also be smaller micro-traumas (some you may not even realize what you're doing) that could be making this injury linger.

Thank you for your video. I've had numbness for more than a week now with no improvement. Can you tell me how I should hold my arm when I sitting? Lying it down without letting the elbow touch the desk still puts pressure on it. If I am sitting away from my desk I rest my arm on my legs. This also still puts pressure on it. Can you tell me how I can rest my elbow when sitting? Thanks in advance 🙂

You're very welcome! Is there a way you can sit and have your elbows not touching anything? If you're working at a computer you should try to have your elbows "floating". Try to give your forearms enough support for you to be comfortable. I'm sure there are a number of videos here on KZbin for work space ergonomics you can check out and get some ideas. Hope this helps, take care! 😁 🙌

I'm so glad I found your video so I can try these exercises. I broke my head of radius 6 weeks ago and haven't rested it like I should. I've pushed it to the limit like a fool by chopping food when I can and lately I've been pushing, lifting and dragging a lot of weight around in the garden. Far too much than I could really manage. I feel I've damaged my arm as its numb and painful where as 2 weeks ago it was finally healing. Could these exercises help me? I don't want to be more of a fool than I already have been. Thanks for your content to help heal us .

Hi there, thanks for the kind words and I'm sorry to hear about your current situation. What I'm reading is that you were healing but it went a bit backwards from losing too much. Don't worry, we've all been there, I have definitely been there. It happens so don't best yourself up too much it won't help your current situation. I would rest and protect for now and stay within your pain limitations. Go back to what you were doing when you felt it was healing well. These exercises should help but I wouldn't push too much and as I always say let pain be your guide. Also, be careful if your taking any type of anti-inflammatory or pain reducing medication, don't go overboard. That will give you a false sense of your pain, just because it doesn't hurt doesn't mean you can go back to full activities. You're still healing from the fracture. Please go see a PT and get looked at. Hope this helps, take care! 😁 🙌

@@positivelyprogressing thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I'm booked in with a clinician very soon for a check up. You are exactly right. I thought I was healed near enough so started lifting really heavy stuff, using a hand saw, a screwdriver and pushing heavy stuff about all in 1 day. It was a lot heavier than I could usually manage even before I broke my elbow. I feel such a fool now, as I can't even use a tin opener today. . I'll try and take it easy for a while until I've been seen and ill do light exercises that are on this brilliant video. Thank you again

Yeah but would an ulnar nerve entrapment get worse by running? Thank u! I really appreciate to taking some time out of your way helping me out.
@positivelyprogressing
@positivelyprogressing 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not completely sure that's what you have going on so I wouldn't assume that is your diagnosis. You may have something going on with your ulnar nerve because of the distribution of your symptoms. I would ask you, have you tried running? If so, did you have discomfort? Did it get worse than baseline? Did it stay the same? I always tell people, let pain be your guide, try to listen to your body. If your pain is getting worse, be honest with yourself. I wouldn't want you to play through pain because that would just be setting you back even further. Hope this helps a little, take care!

Great video! I got a question... I get this syndrome from heavy weight lifting and bad posture working and going on my phone in bed laying down.... I am eliminating these really bad habits, doing rehab, stretching massaging and doing forearm exercises daily, pluses correcting all of my bad posture habits... Say I do this for another month and it goes away, should I go back to lifting weights again? Will it come back? Does cubital tunnel syndrome stay forever? From other searches I may need surgery...

Great question. I can't say whether or not it will go away in a month but it should lessen and eventually go away to some extent. I would keep lifting but not super heavy and as your symptoms go away start adding in heavier days. If your symptoms start coming back you then know your root cause and should back off again. If they don't come back keep doing all the things you're doing because it's working. I also can't say if it'll come back but if you have success with what you're doing currently then you'll need to go back and add some stretches in or check your posture, etc. As far as surgery goes that should be the last resort and only in certain cases is it needed. Feel free to email with any other questions or concerns or treatment! Positivelyprogressing@gmail.com Take care 😁🙌🏼

Thanks for your video. I just found out about this and everything fits. I also believe my husband has it from sitting at his computer all day for work. I draw a lot so now I will need to work at my desk with a better chair. Thanks!

Sir this is very good video, i had an epicondylitis fracture surgeon and maybe i have this syndrome related with surgeon. Can i treat it without surgeon and these exercises?
@positivelyprogressing
@positivelyprogressing Жыл бұрын
It's tough to say, try going through rehab and see how you feel. This will take a while to heal if it's related to the fracture. Be patient and stay consistent. Try to limit anything that will add stress to that area. Good luck, take care!😁🙌

How do you feel about pandiculations vs. stretching of muscles?
@positivelyprogressing
@positivelyprogressing 5 жыл бұрын
I think there's a time for all types of healing, I think both work depending on the person. Although I don't do pandiculations in the Somatic sense I do similar eccentric movements that have similar effects.
