I was very surprised by Cubitos and how it felt like a deck builder with dice. Building your dice pool, trying to get rid of the lame starting dice, cycling through all the dice, and building the dice pool to try to get effective combos all works so well and is so fun!

I see things a little differently. You can't remove the white chips in quacks but that's not equivalent to removing dice in cubito. The bust mechanic is triggered by empty die faces which you can't alter, only add and subtract dice which contain their own bust mechanic. I also think it's easier to assess your odds in quacks. It's a simple calculation of what might I pull next given what I've put in my bag. And most of the game is calculation free until you get near 7 white. Cubitos still has the odds calculations but they are obfuscated by each die having it's own odds so people are much more likely to just push their luck based on intuition instead of more directly considering the odds. While you still can calculate your odds, I think it would seriously slow the game down for everyone. I love cubito, but my problem is that I don't think I would ever want to play it over el dorado which feels much less influenced by luck. With quacks, I can't think of a bag builder I would rather play. I think both are great but ultimately quacks scratches an itch that other games don't.

All of what you said plus I think busting in Quacks is part of the game because it doesn't mess you up too bad, especially early. Busting in Cubitos at any point in the game is so punishing it's not worth it ever so when I get down to only light gray dice I just quit then next turn have to start all over with those crappy dice. Cubitos has some fiddly stuff too. "OK put that one in your active space, put the rest into your roll space, now take the two dice in your Draw space and roll them without the chance of busting. Ok, now put any actives into Active and the rest in Roll and continue if you want." Huh? Some of the green and red ones are fiddly too. Cubitos is OK but I would take Quacks over it any day.

@@Jon-G I agree. I got to try out Cubitos just a couple of days ago and found that the luck aspect in the game frustrated me. There is so much in the game based on just rolling the right die and not getting a lot of blank faces. Quacks is far more controllable since you know what white chips are in your bag so it is not hard to know when to stop pulling.

El dorado vs. Cubitos Early on in our plays el dorado was moderately better to us, but after about 5 plays of each Cubitos has much more momentum than el dorado did. el dorado seems fairy formulaic to us now, while Cubitos has a ton of variability, you can go as many laps as you want, use 4 maps that are decently different (yes e dorado has variability but it always feels like ok I just need more green or blue or gold)

Same here. Base Quacks can be bought for under £30 and it’s great value for money, with tons of replayability and broad appeal. I would be willing to give Cubitos a try, despite already owning Quacks, as I definitely like the presentation (hmmmm, dice...) and I think it’s different enough from Quacks... but it retails for around £50! It looks like you get a lot of game and bits for your money (hmmmm, dice...), but, at that price point, I can’t justify owning both.

BTW I really love both games. Quacks with the blind drawing of the tokens and Cubitos dice chucking silly fun draws me in. Both are racing push your luck games that are a blast to play. Slight edge to Quacks for deck of cards that are used every round to change up gameplay and/or give tokens. I wish Cubitos had some sort of event deck that a card was flipped from every round.

Having tried Cubitos I completely disagree. Cubitos is far more luck based than Quacks and while you do have some control I've played and had many turns where things absolutely failed to work for me when my high cost dice kept coming up with blank faces. I'll stick with Quacks. It is much better in my opinion.
@itsnottylor4011
@itsnottylor4011 Жыл бұрын
I feel like the luck element in Cubitos is objectively more controllable than in Quacks. In Quacks, your odds of drawing the awesome token that you put in the bag is exactly 1:n, where n is the number of tokens left in the bag. Whereas in Cubitos, if you're careful and smart about building your "deck," you can basically ensure that you are rolling every die in your pool that you want to be rolling every turn, and your odds of rolling the face that you would like on each die is n:6, where n is the number of successful faces, which is made even more likely when you have the green dice involved. The problem is, it feels worse in Cubitos when you don't roll symbols, and you are much more likely to roll a dud in Cubitos than you are to pull a dud in Quacks, so it feels like you're more likely to get bad luck in Cubitos. It also, at least to me, feels like it's your fault when you bust in Cubitos, whereas in Quacks, it feels like you just had bad luck. There's a much larger illusion of fault when you roll some dice and they all come up blank than there is when you reach into a bag and pull out a bad token.
@tomasxfranco

I think the Cubitos theme is a race in a cube world. The cube boxes are the stands that the fans watch the race from and the more fans someone has the better they do since they can rely on their fans to push them to keep going further and not give up (bust). And you have that underdog track.

I prefer Quacks, and at the same time I agree about Quacks having a bit less control in gameplay. But the thing is, I'm GOOD with that. I have tons of games in my collection that offer much more or sometimes complete control. Quacks fills a needed lighter spot in my collection where my focus is more on enjoyment of what transpires rather than satisfaction based on performance. However while you certainly do not have full control your decisions still have significant impact. For me it strikes the balance well in a very entertaining package.

Pushing luck and having control over turn are entirely conflicting concepts. I don't think you can say you only like one over the other because you can control over your engine more. These games are luck based and don't shy away from it! It's the whole point of it. You have to take the good with the bad. We have a saying in our game group: "That's Quacks!" for whenever something unexpected happens while playing. It has quickly spread to a motto of life for me. You win some, you lose some, but make no mistake, that is exactly why we play these games. Quacks all the way. (plus everyone taking turns together in Quacks is great and keeps it snappy!)

If you're in it for the deckbuilder experience, Cubitos hands down. In Quacks, you're completely at the mercy of RNG, since you put all your chits back into the bag every round. Having a bad round doesn't affect your chances next round, unlike a typical deckbuilder. If you like the isolated randomness more power to you, but I think this distinction is the big one that makes me love Cubitos much more. It wasn't noted in the video but I particularly like how the actual push your luck aspect of Cubitos feels more tense. While you are rewarded via the fan track, busting is still pretty punishing, whereas in Quacks, if you bust it means you still typically get to buy stuff, and losing out on VP early often doesn't feel that big a deal, especially with how the rubber banding works.

I have played Quacks with expansion and the BGG chip upgrade. I loved it. Yes it is frustrating to not get the chips you wanted EVER but I will still happily play it anytime. It is a fun quick game. I have never played the other but I will be buying that this weekend since it sounds like there is a little more control while still having a random aspect. In quacks I always played with the blue chips being the draw and see and choose one to play option to help offset the randomness. The times I've played without this card I have lost due to exploding. Literally every game... and I have played probably 7 times. I do really enjoy quacks. It is a solid 4 for me.

My family and I enjoy and will play both games. They both definitely work with younger kids (ages 12 and 8 for us). I think I enjoy Cubitos more (base game vs. base game) because of the racing element (we really enjoy The Quest for El Dorado) and the main board providing more layers of strategy to the overall game. Seems like a ton more variability in Cubitos too. Ironically enough, Cubitos was chosen over Quacks earlier this week to play as our family game tonight. I guess that tells you everything right there.

tbf as somebody who played both. Both games are pretty good in their gameplay. But its a type off gameplay thats not for everybody. Like not everybody likes depending on dice rolls. And not everybody likes deck building games where your deck is more hidden. So even tho I like to say they are both good the preference between them really depends on the type off person you are. Personally I prefer cubitos. I really enjoy both but I like to see my deck changing over the course off the game. Since then if I lose because off bad luck at least I had fun building my deck. I heard about and watched how to play videos for both of these and thought they sounded very similar myself based on the push-your-luck and recruiting bits/dice. I have since bought quacks based on the cheaper price and since it was older I had heard more about it. I figured track record was a good thing and I might come back and get cubitos later because it sounds fun, too. I also preferred the theme of quacks. However, I did immediately buy 20mm nickel containers to hold the cardboard pieces because that sounded like a problem right off. So an extra $19 on top of the game. I’ve only played it once so far and it was fun but not as good as I hoped. Every round seemed too obvious of when to stop and the game didn’t last long enough for me. I’ve heard the main benefit of the Quacks expansion is the 5th player addition but I haven’t acquired that yet.

Great video. I would never say the maker of Cubitos copied Quacks, but the overlap in the catch-up mechanism (rat-tails vs red lines) was a bit too on-the-nose for me. As for the games, I'd always pick Quacks over Cubitos (at the moment), because I really don't like the flow with Cubitos: first thinking about which dice to select (strategy) and then depend on luck. Quacks has the same thing, but it's a much more binary choice of stopping or continuing. When I bust with Quacks, it doesn't feel I just spend time strategising for nothing. Quacks: 4, Cubitos: 2 for me.

I think that Blood on the Clocktower would be a 1, or a 2 for you Alex. I can’t really get a lot of people together to play and it isn’t entirely obvious that the script for the combination of people I usually have should be the one with the leviathan, the reason it isn’t obvious is that script seemed like an after thought compared to the first two scripts. I’m also not entirely sure the game works as well without Ben (the guy who does all the games on No Rolls Barred) as story teller, or I would at least challenge No Rolls Barred to use other people for the actual storyteller role, if they can’t then the role is too difficult and a game can never happen. I really like the idea of Blood on the Clocktower, but in execution it doesn’t really work unless it’s online so all the pieces are kept track of easily.

So I just tried Cubitos and my biggest complaint with it is it feels like multi player solitaire. You do the roll phase and run phase almost completely by yourself. Quacks at least there is a point where we see who the leader was for that round, we see who got the black, green and purple chips and how many points were scored. In Cubitos you only see who got the most red dice. Other than that you only see where their runner ends up on the board but you don’t really get to see how and why that happened. At least in quacks you can look over and see what chips they pulled and how far they made it. So right now I’m leaning Quacks sadly. I’m a big fan of Jon D Clair because of Space Base but I think Cubitos is a little disappointing for me. It reminds me of Steampunk Rally where I had a similar multiplayer solitaire experience. Now that I think of it though, in Space Base also people are kind of doing their own thing but for some reason that one works better for me.

Cubitos has the advantage of not needing to buy upgraded tokens. Quacks needs to come with the plastic tokens from the factory for it to be in the same ballpark. Cardboard tokens for that game is just shameful. SHAME!

I own and like Quacks and had not played Cubitos yet. But from all reviews I seen about Cubitos I feel like it will be more frustrating then Quacks for me. I align my opinion with Rina's as usually I have very bad luck with dice rolls. And in Quacks I still have feeling that I'm in control. Despite the fact that it is not possible to predict what value chip will be drawn, but there is possibility to calculate your chance to draw white chip. And I believe playing Cubitos I could be feeling like playing Zombiecide when I am rolling handful of dice and have effect which could let to reroll or mitigate bad rolls and still majority of my dice values are low. And in result I kill one ore two zombies and where my friend just rolls mostly fives and sixes on first roll. Therefore I hated Zombiecide so much that I even had not finished full campaign. So Cubitos could be all over again every single turn rolling blanks. Even now I am frustrated writing about this.

@@BoardGameCo of course she can have a preference but it felt like she was judging you for liking things other than her, she didn't even try to have a discussion and that slowed the video a bit in my opinion, I do like the discussion and wished to hear more cause I love cubitos. Alex, maybe you can ask Shira the following: Shira, it seems a little hypocritical, in Quackalope's video you said you don't enjoy Catch-Up Mechanics, but here you are praising Cubitos for having a better Catch-Up Mechanic? Can you expound on that?
@tillermelnyk

Cubitos and it's even close. I don't see the big appeal with Quacks. Like mentioned in the video, I don't feel like I have much control in Quacks. There's a way bigger engine you can create in Cubitos and more replayability with 4 different maps and 56 different cards.

I got Quacks mostly for groups that aren't just into games that much. Easy and hard for me to stomp them. But man these push your luck games with catch up mechanics. I can appreciate a bit off randomness. But here I'm like "Where is the actual game"? I see it more like something to do, but not something I can really play. This is not an uncommon thought I have with lighter games, but the massive luck aspect of these games make it even worse.

Quacks is fun but problem is its total lack of interaction, I really dont care about your luck pushing. If I a pull an amazing trick, no one is watching because everyone is just looking at their own boards. Cubitos is much better because it pushes players to stop and look at me rolling the dice and sharing those moments.
