A cuckoo is a bird that lays eggs in other nests. To ensure the only one living or getting food is the cuckoo chick, its only thought from the moment it hatches is to get everything else away from it, out of the nest. It doesnt really understand what its doing.

It wasn't mentioned but i think it's important. But there are some birds that evolved along with the cuckoo so it is kind of a genetics arms race where one evolves along with the other because the host bird starts developing specific traits to tell a cuckoo egg is in the nest or which chick belongs to them. Based on egg coloration and pattern or beak and mouth coloration But the cuckoos also watch the host's nests form a distance and if an egg or a baby is found out and removed or it somehow dies the cuckoo destroys and kills and hatchlings in that nest. But that is for the early stages of the chick's life at a certain point mother cuckoo leaves. That is where the mouth coloration strategy comes into play the mother hosts her own chick's have specific marks in their mouths for her to tell which belongs to her brood which means the cuckoo will be starved to death but these aren't 100% fool proof counter since cuckoos start to adapt to thero counts and mimic them as well.
