I think the noise is charming. You could remove it with a very high end cutoff anyway if you wanted. It’s all about techno-punk lo-fi grittiness. It is a video game chip and somehow that is part of the character of the ym2612. It’s like a memory of a world of wonder and discovery. Safe but dramatic. Not too thin but not fully developed.

The fact that this has knobs and levers for all operators and parameters has me soooooo tempted. I bought a volca fm because fm synthesis just seemed so interesting, but navigating the menus or using dexed leaves me feeling like I'm just increasing and decreasing values at random. It feels like being able to tweak all operators at a fingertip away would help. Then again, maybe I just need to spend more time with the fm before spending more money
@larsenmb4 жыл бұрын
You can get a broad range of sounds from just tweaking the default presets with the knobs on the device. Also the Volca FM can be loaded with DX7 patches of which there are many available online for free. I haven't actually loaded any of these tho. While all this is nice almost all of the parameters can't be reached without using the menu and the params sheet, which is not really my idea of exploring sounds. But I think there exists apps for tablets and for computers that makes the parameters a lot more accessible, I believe Cuckoo used one in a video of his on the Volca FM.
@larsenmb4 жыл бұрын
So I totally agree, knobs and sliders for each parameter seems like a dream
@larsenmb4 жыл бұрын
Also the sequencer is actually really nice as you can also sequence knob movement on almost all of the knobs. You can so some crazy things
@xephon30004 жыл бұрын
@@larsenmb Yeah, I watched Cuckoo's mega tutorial on the volca fm. The only thing keeping me from using patch base to have direct access to all the parameters is...not owning an ipad. I actually don't have a tablet of any kind, so I guess I could justify it that way. Yup, that's one of things I like about the volca line; being able to sequence changes to most of the knobs on them.

Have you (or anyone in the comments) tried reproducing specific video game samples on the MegaFM by referencing parameters found on Genesis VSTs (like Chipsynth MD or Genny)? Or are they too different? @truecuckoo4 жыл бұрын
Yeah this is all about the sound. The Digitone is all about the sequencer, performance, parameter locks, composing and arranging etc. The Elektron boxes are very rich, but the MEGAfm sound is something completely different. It’s distorting a lot though, and I’m waiting to hear back from the maker about it before making a longer video. This is recorded at the sweetspot of volume where it’s not distorting for me.
@SuperTinyeyes4 жыл бұрын
True Cuckoo interesting, yeah.. lol I can’t get enough of those tones. It’s knocked me sideways a bit tbh as I wasn’t expecting to be this charmed by it. I know it’s not really a fair question but how would you say it compares to Chipsynth MD I’m gonna download this weekend and take it for a ride
@truecuckoo4 жыл бұрын
Carl Linsdell chipsynth MD is very accurate and true to the legacy chips that were actually in the Megadrive. I’m not sure which iteration/ generation chips are used in the MEGAfm, or whether they’re licenced or copycats, but I guess they’re a modern rerun? 🤷🏽♀️ subtle differences. Genuine sound. No distortion issues on the Chipsynth MD, which is convenient. You can rip patches straight from music files in the software. Of course the MEGAfm has a physical input panel which is making a huge difference for me personally. There’s always pros and cons.
@SuperTinyeyes4 жыл бұрын
True Cuckoo 100% on having physical controls especially on FM synthesis when the tiniest tweaks make dramatic changes. My prediction is I get chipsynth MD and it just a fuels my need for this haha any way, thanks man. Looking forward to seeing your other videos etc around this synth
