Thanks for using the term developing country and not third world country, it is so painful and disrespectful. The next time a visit Cuenca I'll be looking for this pareja gringa just to say hi. Same here. I’m 46, single and very worried I’m not going to be able to survive post-retirement in the US. I’ve worked extremely hard and am better off than most, but the recent explosion in real estate costs across the US has me questioning whether I will be able to afford a coastal or mountain home in NoCAL and not be house poor. I’d love to hear more about how you balance your US jobs while living overseas. I saw your video on how you get your mail, but would love to hear how you had that conversation with your employer.

That’s why I’m watching these videos. I was able to pick up a couple of rentals during the last housing downturn both under 100,000 for three bedroom two bath, so in some ways I’m luckier than most in that I could move into 1, but now the taxes are ridiculous. I was hoping for 5 acres of undeveloped land but even that’s expensive then then would be the cost of clearing it and building a house

These are really outstanding posts on Ecuador. My wife and I went to an International Living conference in Quito a few years ago. We also went to Cuenca, Loja, and Vilcabamba. I was so impressed with Ecuador and the people. People here are so reluctant to explore other options. We are vegan and thoroughly enjoyed going through the mercados. Thank you so much for all you do. Maybe one day I'll live in Cuenca. Do you have concerns about changing politics?
@AmeliaAndJP
@AmeliaAndJP 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! We have concerns about changing politics here just like we did in the US. The main difference now is that we're far more mobile and able to leave quickly if we need to. Hopefully Ecuador will remain stable because we love it here, but no country is safe from foreign meddling and economic warfare.

I just wanted to comment...definitely do your research. You CAN live on alot less monthly income than these two. For example, they are renting a place in a "gringo" area of the city so it will be more expensive. Most locals pay around $300-350 for 3BR/2BA home or even less. Yes, that would be unfurnished in most cases. But, the great deal is that utilities are usually no more than $40 a month including internet. I just wanted you to know. I lived in Cuenca for a year and hope to return soon. I will let you know there is another "craigslist" type site called Olx.com.ec. You will see there what the locals are actually paying for apartments, houses, etc.
@AmeliaAndJP
@AmeliaAndJP 5 жыл бұрын
El Vergel isn’t a gringo area at all. We’re the only gringos on our block and we rarely see other gringos in this area. The gringo areas aren’t very close to here. Rent has gone up a lot here in the past few years. There are unfurnished places in that range but they’re either outside the main city or they’re not as nice as our house. You can definitely live here for a lot less than we do, though 👍
@triaticnomadics1108
@triaticnomadics1108 5 жыл бұрын
@@AmeliaAndJP Ok, yeah. I know about the other gringo areas, but this one was mentioned in someone elses video about the gringo areas in Cuenca. It can be more difficult when you have specific needs. Glad you were able to find a good place though. God Bless!

Excellent cost of living video. Thank you! Your house is gorgeous (and the furniture is of a very high quality, for a rental property). The price is higher than most of the other Cuenca home tours I've seen on KZbin, but it's still an incredible value by US standards (especially when compared to a major hub city like NYC, Los Angeles or Washington DC). All in all, the monthly cost of living seems extremely reasonable. JP mentioned being a Web designer. I am likewise a Web designer and would love to pick your brain regarding employment possibilities and how other people you've met in our line of work are making out. Thanks again. Be well and take care.
@AmeliaAndJP
@AmeliaAndJP 5 жыл бұрын
There aren’t really any employment opportunities for expats here. At least not for the pay we’re used to. Your best bet is to continue working for a company or clients in the states. Most jobs here pay very little and require Spanish fluency.

While there are pros being in a country where the USD is the local currency , there are also cons. I retired in Colombia three years ago, from Canada. I currently rent a 3 bedroom , 2.5 bath house in Medellin for about 425 Canadian per month, about 325 USD plus utilities. What you really save money on, by being in South America , is anything to do with labour costs - getting a housekeeper, house repairs such as electric or plumbing, health or dental work, etc.

I'm in Jackson Hole, where, of course, it's cold in winter. Now, 9 degrees outside, but 60 degrees inside and comfortable for me. So, I don't think I would ever be uncomfortable there. And, I lived in Seattle and north and south (Oregon) on the coast. So, Cuenca would be a good place for me to live. Half the cost of living for me here in the US. See you when I fully retire in your spring 2021.

They never seem to put in enough outlets ( yes, I'm an electrician ) . In my place in Cuenca , we had 15 feet of kitchen counter space, and only one outlet . I doubt there are any codes ( which can be a good thing), and not many workers care about them if there are. I do like Cuenca though , for many reasons.

The expenses are a lot higher than I expected. Your hair costs $40, that's what I pay in the US now for hair and color, and this video was 4 years ago. I paid $5 for a haircut in Mexico, which included a lot of extras. I think the IMF transition to the US dollar affected Equador with a lot of inflation.

I have my SS direct deposited to a Charles Schwab checking account (because they are favorable to travelers and really fight for you when an ATM machine malfunctions, and reimburse ATM charges) but any large bank will do. Ecuador uses US dollars. So I get my money from any ATM machine and then spend it. Easy peazy. You should visit and see if you are compatible with Ecuador. Not everyone is.

@@Bellyupandbored sorry. I did not see you question to respond. I have been watching a lot of KZbin bloggers’ vídeos who made the move to Eduardo or who are thinking about and I have been watching a lot of KZbin nomad travelers who visit many places who have visited Ecuador. I would visit Cuenca and/or other cities in Ecuador to get a feel for it. Airbnb visits are not too terribly expensive and with a pre planned airline purchase it wouldn’t be too bad of a vacation from the states to figure out which city is the one you like.

Most do not come with a heater. You'll need to buy your own. There are no central heating systems in Cuenca but some of the newer places up in San Joaquin have radiant floor heating.

I speak, read, and write English and Spanish and currently learning Japanese as I am moving to Osaka Japan in about 10 months from the US. Are you planning to learn Spanish as you are living in Ecuador? Or are you going to rely on Cuencanos that speak English, as well as relying on Gringo Post and such, or frequent just Gringo areas like Ordonez Lasso, Las Americas, El Centro, etc. Or Are you planning to live true Local Cuenca, interacting with their Locals, culture, way of living etc. It will be very interesting to know, all the best of luck in your new life!!!

We have enjoyed your videos relating to Vilcabamba and Cuenca. I am surprised you still have to keep mentioning how safe Ecuador is? We have the same issues when we mention we travelled long-term in Mexico. It seems that people have watched too many crime dramas and expect that we'll end up in a ditch somewhere?? Totally bizarre.
