Same here. I’m 46, single and very worried I’m not going to be able to survive post-retirement in the US. I’ve worked extremely hard and am better off than most, but the recent explosion in real estate costs across the US has me questioning whether I will be able to afford a coastal or mountain home in NoCAL and not be house poor. I’d love to hear more about how you balance your US jobs while living overseas. I saw your video on how you get your mail, but would love to hear how you had that conversation with your employer.

That’s why I’m watching these videos. I was able to pick up a couple of rentals during the last housing downturn both under 100,000 for three bedroom two bath, so in some ways I’m luckier than most in that I could move into 1, but now the taxes are ridiculous. I was hoping for 5 acres of undeveloped land but even that’s expensive then then would be the cost of clearing it and building a house

I just wanted to comment...definitely do your research. You CAN live on alot less monthly income than these two. For example, they are renting a place in a "gringo" area of the city so it will be more expensive. Most locals pay around $300-350 for 3BR/2BA home or even less. Yes, that would be unfurnished in most cases. But, the great deal is that utilities are usually no more than $40 a month including internet. I just wanted you to know. I lived in Cuenca for a year and hope to return soon. I will let you know there is another "craigslist" type site called Olx.com.ec. You will see there what the locals are actually paying for apartments, houses, etc.
@AmeliaAndJP5 жыл бұрын
El Vergel isn’t a gringo area at all. We’re the only gringos on our block and we rarely see other gringos in this area. The gringo areas aren’t very close to here. Rent has gone up a lot here in the past few years. There are unfurnished places in that range but they’re either outside the main city or they’re not as nice as our house. You can definitely live here for a lot less than we do, though 👍
@triaticnomadics11085 жыл бұрын
@@AmeliaAndJP Ok, yeah. I know about the other gringo areas, but this one was mentioned in someone elses video about the gringo areas in Cuenca. It can be more difficult when you have specific needs. Glad you were able to find a good place though. God Bless!

Excellent cost of living video. Thank you! Your house is gorgeous (and the furniture is of a very high quality, for a rental property). The price is higher than most of the other Cuenca home tours I've seen on KZbin, but it's still an incredible value by US standards (especially when compared to a major hub city like NYC, Los Angeles or Washington DC). All in all, the monthly cost of living seems extremely reasonable. JP mentioned being a Web designer. I am likewise a Web designer and would love to pick your brain regarding employment possibilities and how other people you've met in our line of work are making out. Thanks again. Be well and take care.

While there are pros being in a country where the USD is the local currency , there are also cons. I retired in Colombia three years ago, from Canada. I currently rent a 3 bedroom , 2.5 bath house in Medellin for about 425 Canadian per month, about 325 USD plus utilities. Thank you so much, that's what we all want to hear. The rest is a lot of rambling with not much solid info, but they are kind to share, and hopefully they will make videos that move along at a faster pace.

This video is over 7 months old. We’ve improved quite a bit since then and recorded a shorter cost of living video in response to all the complaints but KZbin prefers to show this one in search results instead. You can also skip ahead but a lot of people asked for a tour of our house so we showed it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6CVpn5uaqyXgpY

JP and Amelia, Speaking of rental in Cuenca, do houses and /or apartments come with “heater” ? Per info the weather in Cuenca is quite cold especially at night.
@AmeliaAndJP5 жыл бұрын
Most do not come with a heater. You'll need to buy your own. There are no central heating systems in Cuenca but some of the newer places up in San Joaquin have radiant floor heating.

Very nice. Thank you! Are you guys in the same house now? I saw something you uploaded two days ago...the background was different. Anyway, I love Cuenca too...have been there three times. Planning to move there next year with my partner -- assuming this COVID-19 thing would be thing of the past. Stay safe!

I speak, read, and write English and Spanish and currently learning Japanese as I am moving to Osaka Japan in about 10 months from the US. Are you planning to learn Spanish as you are living in Ecuador? Or are you going to rely on Cuencanos that speak English, as well as relying on Gringo Post and such, or frequent just Gringo areas like Ordonez Lasso, Las Americas, El Centro, etc. Or Are you planning to live true Local Cuenca, interacting with their Locals, culture, way of living etc. It will be very interesting to know, all the best of luck in your new life!!!

I think our problem is too much choice. We had a long visit to Mexico to various towns from England and enjoyed every place. We did want to also visit Ecuador but ran out of time. Perhaps next time? We have enjoyed your videos relating to Vilcabamba and Cuenca. I am surprised you still have to keep mentioning how safe Ecuador is? We have the same issues when we mention we travelled long-term in Mexico. It seems that people have watched too many crime dramas and expect that we'll end up in a ditch somewhere?? Totally bizarre.

Hi,just discovered you and subscribed.The medical,is that the price for full coverage? Do you have out of pocket medical expenses and will it cover out of pocket expenses?
@AmeliaAndJP4 жыл бұрын
We have a $5 copay. This is for full coverage. They reimburse qualified out of pocket expenses. The coverage varies a lot by plan so you really need to get a quote to fully understand what it will be for your situation.

Need info, the Canadian Embassy has a travel advisory out on Cuenca, can you provide information.

We haven’t heard anything about that. Do they have details about it? We feel safer here than we did in Denver.

OMG - is Daisy a toy poodle???? So's my little Juliette! How's veterinary care?
@AmeliaAndJP2 жыл бұрын
Alicia was a Toy Poodle. She left us last year at the ripe old age of 20. Daisy is a Heeler/Border Collie mix. Pet care is excellent in the cities.
