I love this video more than words can describe. The abysmal resolution making us instantly aware and afraid of what we're watching: when was this taken? Why? By whom? We feel as if we are being made privy to a secret enfolded in the darkness of a rotten Brazilian shanty town. The fact that this is a "solo" only because he's playing the instrument while alone, as the "solo" itself is a tuneless, joyless, mirthless, amelodic cacophony; his perpetual, emotionless scowl combined with the 2007-era picture quality turning his face into an undecipherable visage, a swirling pixel soup only occasionally calming itself to reveal the inscrutable horror beneath. The impossibly drab background providing absolutely zero comfort, not a single familiar object, not one recognizable element the hapless viewer could use to make sense of, to contextualize, to *solve* the semiotic chaos unfolding before them, instead, all we have is the mere form of a musical performance, orphaned signifiers, disconnected signals: what meaning could possibly be gained or ascribed? Is it even meant to be? What if we get to Heaven and the throne of the Lord lies empty? Finally, the running time. 7 minutes. 11% of an hour. In music, a solo is almost always expected to last from 10 seconds to a minute and a half, it is uncommon for a single musician to jam away at his instrument for more than 3 minutes, even rarer for more than 5, even in genres like jazz and progressive rock. A 7-minute long solo is truly a chimæra in music of any kind, it could only be and has been pulled off by the most talented players, with a profound, preternatural connection to the art and possessed of unmatched technique. There is none of that here. As mentioned before, there is no musicality, no coherency, no thought, no motivation, no feeling, no skill, no love, no anger, no *art* to any sound produced by the cuica. It almost seems purposefully offensive, an insult to the idea itself of musical proficiency, or a deconstruction of solos, of *music* itself: stripped of any soul, devoid of any impulse, and still dragging on for 7 interminable, deathly minutes. It spits in the face of beauty and dares it to strike back. Simply the ugliest thing ever crafted.

For all who want to know. A cuica should immitate the sound lions make at their hot time as far as i know. Plus they are actually used in Samba where they do play "solo" but not like this. It goes in 16th notes. It usually does not have those horns on it.
