Cujo chases a rabbit, and gets bitten by a bat with rabies.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on a Stephen King novel, Cujo is not as menacing or as frightening as other film adaptations of King's popular stories and especially cannot compare to the 1976 Carrie. Cujo is a happy St. Bernard until he is bitten on the nose by a rabid bat and slowly begins manifesting the symptoms of his fatal illness. His condition deteriorates as he attacks people again and again, until finally, mom Donna Trenton (Dee Wallace) and her son Tad (Danny Pintauro) are trapped inside the family car with Cujo lurking nearby, set to kill them any way he can. A showdown is inevitable but is as predictable as the rest of the film.

Actually, the dog gave them a lot of trouble during the filming. It was so friendly they had to tie down its tail to keep it from wagging and it was hard to get it to do anything menacing. There are several scenes where they are obviously using a man in a dog suit because the dog would not do what was required.

I like this story because it doesn't really have a true villain. Cujo's the antagonist, but most people seem to understand he didn't have a choice and was suffering badly both physically and mentally while suffering from rabies, which is a nightmarish virus to endure. You could make an argument for the bat, but it didn't have any malicious intent either, it was just defending itself and its colony against what it thought was a predator invading. The story is one where everyone is a tragic victim of circumstance, which makes it both sadder and scarier, since there was nothing anyone could have really done to avoid what happened.

While I agree that it's awful to watch Cujo succumb to madness from rabies and become a monster, remember, his child owner did point out numerous times that something was wrong with him and his mother told him to tell the father AFTER they left town. By that point, Cujo was unfortunately fucked.
