CULT OF PERSONALITY | The Summer of Punk Story (Full Storyline Documentary)
It’s been said before by Paul Heyman that all wrestling fans really want is to believe in something that’s real, to have their suspension of disbelief carried for just long enough so as to make them forget what they’re seeing is predetermined. And that’s part of what made WWE in 2011 so special as, for the briefest of shining moments, fans believed in something again, and that something was CM Punk. Yes while wrestling might never get that elusive boom period again, there was no one who came closer to sparking those fires once more than the Chicago boy, capturing the attention of audiences, both already watching and lapsed, to create a moment in time that’s still talked about to this day. So how did it all happen? Well join us today as we take a deep dive into the entire angle from start to finish in Cult of Personality: The Summer of Punk Story.

*WWE (as the usual) dropped the ball on this storyline so hard. I remember how 11-year-old me was so highly invested in the storyline. From CM Punk dropping that infamous pipebomb, to the build up to match at Money in the Bank between Cena and Punk and even the match as well everything from the beginning was just pure perfection. And then WWE decided to kill his momentum by making him lose the Triple H which was super pointless. SMH.*

Crazy to think CM Punk would have never left WWE in the first place, if he had gotten the one thing he had been wanting all along, a Mania main event. (The account in the reply section is not me).
@mycahjofficial

WrestleMania 29 would’ve been the perfect time for CM Punk to get his ‘Mania main-event. But unfortunately WWE decided to end his historic 434-day title reign in the most disappointing way possible by making him lose to The Rock just so they could have him and Cena go at it again which made that whole “Once In A Lifetime” match complete nonsense.
@GameBreaker1055
@GameBreaker1055 2 жыл бұрын
@@mycahjofficial I mean, he did get his Undertaker match, which arguably WAS the main event of Wrestlemania at that time. Honestly, between defending a belt in the final match of the show against two wrestlers with no momemtum and taking on the streak, Punk honestly had the match with the better audience.

@@mycahjofficial and the funny/sad thing is that they could have still build a blockbuster main event by having Rocky (the Hollywood A-lister and WWE legend) vs Cena (the company man) vs Punk (the indy rebel), which would have add the additional benefits of: (1) not being a mockery of what was marketed as the "Once in a Lifetime" event just the year prior; (2) not making the outcome as obvious as it turned out to be; (3) not making one of their biggest money-making stars leave while still in his prime.

I honestly totally forgot how bungled this story was following him winning the belt at MITB because I just think of the pipe bomb so fondly. But looking back at how awesome things were once MITB ended and the potential it had, and then thinking back that he genuinely was out the door until the final moment to commit long term his disdain makes a lot more sense. He came to the event having signed a two day extension to get through the event and didn’t sign a true contract until hour into the actual event. And you have to imagine all the proooses that were made to win him over and that he may have allowed himself to believe that it would happen. Then once he’s signed the dotted line they have him return immediately, have him lose the title in a lame as hell way, and then feud with Kevin Nash of all people. And then when he can’t even get cleared he gets to lose to HHH without much of night. Then he has to back HHH on TV before he wins back the title and goes on his run. And while having a record run more PPVs than not he wasn’t headlining the cards then he gets thrown to the rock, undertaker and Brock. So I can get it to an extent. You were finally ready to leave after being disappointed in not being seen at the top level, probably get promised the world to finally get you to sign on again and then you’re a second tier top guy, getting a run many would envy but always being second fiddle and how much at that point he must have wished he had just left.

This summer of punk thing could have easily brought Buzz to the entire Wrestling industry if only WWE worked with the other promotions to give the "Punk leaving WWE with the WWE title "more teeth . Fat chance of that ever happening. However ,Can you imagine the buzz seeing Punk defending the belt NJPW or ROH or TNA or CZW and so on . Have Punk defend the belt at these promotions for atleast 4 months . This would have been the biggest event in wrestling since the debut of the NWO . ... and then they could have had him return to the WWE in time for Survivor series to face Triple H , who has taken it upon himself to win back the WWE belt from Punk. Oh well , a fan can only dream ....

CM Punk should’ve beat John Cena at Money In The Bank and then leave for an undefined amount of time leaving RAW without an WWE Champion,WWE would decide to book a tournament to crown a new WWE Champion with the finals seeing Rey face off with Miz in which Rey defeats Miz to win his first WWE Title.Cena would be reinstated later night and instead would get his title shot next week where the match would be interrupted by a returning Punk allowing Rey to roll Cena up for pin and retain the WWE Title.SummerSlam would see a Triple Threat match occur where Punk,Rey,and John would have an Undisputed Title match where the match would end in Punk defeating Rey and John to be announced as the Undisputed WWE Champion.Punk and Rey would have a fair one on one match at Night Of Champions where Punk would defeat Rey but only after John interfered in the match.Punk and John would have their war at Hell In A Cell where Punk would defeat John for the WWE Undisputed Title and retain.John and Punk would have a rematch at Survivor Series and this would see an absolute shock occur where John sides with Vince and another screw job occurs at Survivor Series with Cena winning the WWE Title once again.Punk and Cena would have a TLC match at TLC where Cena would defeat John after some interference from HHH(reluctantly)who was doing what’s best for business and nailing Punk with a SledgeHammer.HHH and Punk would have a match at Royal Rumble with it being named a Street Fight by Vince McMahon with Punk defeating Triple H.Punk would win the 2012 Royal Rumble and would continue his path to WrestleMania 28 and the WWE Championship.Punk would defend his WrestleMania WWE Title match against other competitors inside of the Elimination Chamber and this would see him survive.WrestleMania 28 would instead be a Triple Threat match between The Rock,John Cena,and CM Punk for the WWE Championship with Punk defeating Cena and Rock to regain the World Title.

I really thought 2011 was going to bring in the next wrestling boom period. We had a set of new main eventers like Christian, Henry, Truth, and Del Dio. And silly me thought Punk would be the new Austin leading the way. Unfortunately RAW became the HHH and Stephanie show. That's when myself and millions of others started to change the channel. I already endured the Triple H and Steph love fest during the Attitude era.

How ridiculous that "mercurial Vince" was still so hung up on "big, sweat men".... quickly forgetting the success of Mr. Perfect, HBK, and Bret Hart. SMH

Quite telling how John Cena was able to do the job when it mattered but Triple H wouldn't.

I think HHH’s current woes are karma finally coming back to bite him for all the scum bag things he did to other wrestlers over the years.

@@sparks2spare782 just a pity that so many other talents are actually the ones paying on his behalf by losing their jobs... so not much of catartic karmic retribution.

cena did what? he never lost to punk clean in that 2011 run, and he beat punk back like twice, you should see how undertaker, the rock, and randy orton put new talented guys over, especially clean, thats the right way

@@weneedhim526 I said Cena did the job. I didn't say clean but at least he did the damn job.

That year Cena lost to Miz, Punk and Del Rio in big title matches. In his run as THE guy I don’t think anyone lost more than Cena did as a whole.

It sucks because it could have been SO MUCH BETTER! It started really hot, with the Pipebomb and Cena MITB etc, but then ... yeah just got worse after that really. Edit: Also great content as always!

Punk actually lost the RoH title from James Gibson in a multiman match. He fought Cabana in his farewell match.

They also told some Revisionist History by saying the late 00s were a dark period for WWE. In actuality (other than the Beniot Incident) it was an Underrated time
