Ida Lupino was such a talent. Born into a theatrical family in England, she'd memorised all of Shakespeare's female roles by the age 10 ! She was an actress, writer, co-producer and director and even wrote music as a hobby. A pioneer who showed that women could direct films if only given the chance. Her films often tackled social issues eg Not Wanted in 1949 about an unmarried mother and The Bigamist in 1953. This is a really tense drama with great performances from the three main characters. I like the fact that the Mexican characters speak Spanish, all adds to the authenticity. A film from 70 years ago which is still great today.

I love the fact that it was a woman who made this raw story with that great, tough leading actor. At the time that was (probably) unheard of. There's still not too many women directors who film raw movies like that..

Very riveting. I enjoyed this immensely. Great actors. It reminds me unfortunately of my grandmother's youngest brother, who was murdered by a hitchhiker he picked up late one night on his way back to his home in Altoona, PA. He was a chaplain in the war--in the European theater--and had been wounded and walked with a cane. It was the only time my mother said she saw my grandmother cry, losing her youngest brother in this way. It was 1951, I believe.

Little...? Wonder if you'd apply the same adjective to an adult man. Except I know you wouldn't. This is why great female directors don't get as many opportunities, pervading condescending attitudes like yours.

Smart. But if ... On some stormy night, out in the middle of nowhere, you should pick me up hitching ... Well ... Let's just say this: You'd still be laughing your ass off ... Miles down the road from where you dropped me off. And you'd feel good about yourself for helping me out. I've done a lot of hitching in my time. But that was in the good ol days. Nowadays people are paranoid. Like you. Can't blame em though.

@@tonytafoya6217 While hitching through Europe I was given a lift by two truck-drivers in Italy. Not realising I understood Italian they started arguing about which of them was going to "have" me first on the bunk at the back. At that point I clutched my stomach and started groaning. They asked what was wrong and I pointed to my stomach and said: "Bambino". The brakes were slammed on and I was dumped out of that truck so fast. That was scary.

There are two scenes from this film that reminded me of other movies: the gun reveal at 6:45 looks similar to the 'Marvin and the Gun' incident from Pulp Fiction and the film's clothes-switching twist at the end seems a lot like the ending of Crocodile Dundee 2.

I love this movie. Jim Morrison of The Doors got the idea of a (killing) hitchhiker script because of this movie. You can see Morrison's script in one of his poetry books + in his swansong 'Riders On The Storm' he talks about a killing hitchhiker too (+ in the special version on the album 'An American Prayer') "The hitchhiker stood by the side o/t road and levelled his thumb in the calm calculus of reason". That's his personal image/symbol: the hitchhiker, alone, by the side of the open road. These were among the last lines he wrote in his Paris Journal in '71. PS: The movie 'The Hitcher' with Rutger Hauer was inspired by Morrison's script too. 👍🏝🏜🚙
