I think this year, cultivating really helps break up the crust from all the rain. It is great to have a 2wd tractor to cultivate with. They usually are more "nimble". Thanks for the video.

That’s why I wait to side dress my anhydrous our ground is very crusty too but as soon as that anhydrous goes on in the next two days you can see the corn jump yes it’s just one more thing to do but I like it better than pre-plant

It will grow so much better and taller! I did a test with a patch a couple years ago and that corn was a foot an a half taller and had much bigger stalks and ears where i went down the rows. Was sooo cool to see. MAN i gotta get me a cultivator and plant some acres! Love doing that!
@johnwarren-649
@johnwarren-649 5 жыл бұрын
I think you should do some beans as test cause you'd be amazed at the difference in yeild Travis. We ran every acre of beans though the calelevator. We done a test one year done 12 rows skipped 12 rows an there was a difference in yeild more than enough to pay for the fuel an time

You really need to plant a cover crop in your field to give it a 60 days of green cover . then roll it to pack down for the winter. This will feed the soil. This will make you soil absorb and conserve moisture. Your soil is starving.

Nice looking corn. Wonder how much the flooding is going to affect corn prices this year. I have heard that many farmers in the mid west still having got corn in the ground.

Travis lives where the green grass grows, watching his corn pop up in rows. Every night be tucked in close... to Brittany. (Sorry, had to change it up to make it fit reality, not the rhymes.) The fields look a lot nicer when you clean up the rows like this. The corn gets more of a fighting chance this way, and every bit counts.

Not sure if this would help you cultivating. But the farmer I worked for used to put angle irons with a thin piece of metal at the very tip. On the front of the tractor to help keep both of us lined up with the row. Basically he took the front weight bracket. And positioned A piece of angle iron with a piece of metal out front over the row. And use a bunch of washers to angle the angle Iron and Put some metal washers out front to line up with the row.

Great video as always Travis , would you ever consider a 12 row cultivator? I know that there are many variables like tire width on the 76 and the 46 also it does seem like some of your fields are wedge shaped Which would make complete coverage more difficult. If the 46 years and option I think auto steer would be really cool cultivating corn unless I don’t know enough about auto steer maybe it’s impossible to set up cultivating corn with auto steer just a thought keep up the great work.

Orthman had a self-steering cultivator-- it worked like the "feelers" under a corn head snouts that keep the combine head on the row, but the feelers moved electrical sensors in a box mounted under the toolbar... this in turn operated electro-hydraulic controls to a steerable coulter blade, which then responded to the feelers and pivoted the coulter blade left or right to pull the cultivator to the left or right to keep the cultivator gangs centered on the rows and prevent "iron blight"... all you had to do was set the three point arms so they could float side to side (remove the lower stabilizer blocks or fully retract them on a Deere tractor) and then steer the tractor so you kept the tires in the row middles... the cultivator did the rest. Later! OL J R :)

To use GPS autosteer to guide a cultivator, you'd have to 1) have EXTREMELY accurate GPS, like sub-inch accuracy, so you're not plowing out corn, 2) have an autosteer system installed on the tractor, and 3) have the sway blocks fully engaged to "lock" the cultivator to the tractor so that it could not sway side to side AT ALL, so the cultivator stayed EXACTLY centered behind the tractor at all times... A 4020 with autosteer-- who'd have thunk it?? LOL:) Later! OL J R :)
