In this video I explain a little bit about the history of the field I’m cultivating and how we ended up renting this field.

We love to hear the history that you add to your videos! It's actually also really good that we are watching this as a neighbor just offered us 11 acres of non certified ground and we weren't sure if we could transition it! Peter would like to know what population you planted and the variety of corn this is? Thanks Paul, have a great night, Lynette

Hi Lynette. Glad you like the video. On this field we planted Pioneer non gmo seed corn. Can’t remember the variety number but it is a 96 day corn. We plant all our corn @ 32k with 38” row planter. I’m not gonna lie but it was hard trying to make a profit on the first two years of transition. The first year we made a profit but last year just we broke even. Hopefully this year we will make a profit on it.

It would be interesting to see what a corn tissue test says about the nutrition. I'm guessing with manure available micronutrients should be great and nitrogen is the limiter. We're conventional and working without a manure source.

We usually send in feed samples after harvest to check the nutritional value of our crops so our nutritionist can draw up the right ration for our cattle. I know we’ve made gains in our nutrition value since we started doing a better job of fertilizing. Usually nitrogen is our limiting factor. Legume crops do really help but sometimes that’s not even enough.

I cultivated corn one time and I was a bundle of nerves. I was so scared I was going to run it over. Your corn looks real good.

Do you use any starter fertiliser like pig/chicken manure or compost?
@organicpaulguy6 жыл бұрын
We did apply some composted manure on one of our corn fields this spring. Other then that we spread our cattle manure on all the fields we plant to corn plus the mined fertilizer we were spreading in this video.

Have you thought about interseed legumes after cultivation, They put nitrogen in cash crop and weed control

We actually tried seeding clover right behind the cultivator one year & it didn’t grow very good. I think part of the reason it didn’t take was because we didn’t get enough rain to help it take off and grow.

Do you know how much it costs you to produce a bushel of corn do you make much profit off of organic corn
@organicpaulguy6 жыл бұрын
The production costs can vary a little every year. On this particular field we will keep track of all our expenses. Mainly because it is rented ground. We try to keep track of everything, even fuel expenses. We should make a profit on it but it’s hard to say because some that corn will get put through our milk cows. I say that because the organic milk price is lower. If we sold it all for $12 per bushel we’d definitely make a profit.

If someone says they have cultivated corn and don’t run any over from getting off the row once in a while they’ve never cultivated corn. It happens to the best of us.

Jeremy Smits I have a cousin that farms organic like us & he is the type would say he never cultivates out any corn. He also never makes mistakes either, so he thinks! I'm not afraid to admit my mistakes. It's all about learning from ur mistakes & teaching others so they don't make the same mistakes. Talk later, Paul
