চর নামকাইল বাংলাদেশের ময়মনসিংহ জেলার গফরগাঁও উপজেলা জনপদের দত্তের বাজার ইউনিয়নের বাড়ইগাঁও গ্রামে অবস্থিত। প্রতিবছর বন্যার সময় ব্রহ্মপুত্র নদের পানি এই চরের উপর দিয়ে প্রবাহিত হয়। বন্যার পানিতে প্রচুর পলি বয়ে নিয়ে আসে বিধায় এই চরের মাটি খুবই উর্বর হয়। বন্যার পানি নেমে যাওয়ার পর থেকেই এই চরে প্রচুর পরিমাণে শাকসবজি উৎপাদন করেন এই অঞ্চলের বাসিন্দারা।
চড়ে উর্বর জমিতে বিভিন্ন প্রকার শাক সবজির পাশাপাশি উৎপাদন করে থাকেন বহু মূল্যবান অর্থকরী ফসল কার্পাস তোলা। এই তুলা থেকেই সাধারণত আমাদের পরিধেয় বস্ত্রের সুতা তৈরি করা হয়। কার্পাস তোলার সুতা দিয়ে তৈরি সুতি কাপড় পরিধান খুবই আরামদায়ক হয়ে থাকে। বহুকাল থেকেই এই অঞ্চলে প্রচুর পরিমাণে কার্পাস তোলা চাষ করা হতো। তারই ধারাবাহিকতা এখনো কিছুটা টিকে আছে।
প্রাচীনকালে প্রচুর কার্পাস তোলা চাষ হতো বিধায় পার্শ্ববর্তী উপজেলা জনপদের নামকরণ করা হয়েছে কাপাসিয়া।
মানব সভ্যতার ইতিহাসের প্রাচীনতম ফসলরূপে পরিগণিত এই কার্পাস তুলা। প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক নিদর্শনসমূহ থেকে প্রাপ্ত তথ্য মোতাবেক জানা যায় যে প্রায় সাত হাজার বছর পূর্বে কার্পাস তুলার ব্যবহার শুরু হয়। বর্তমানে প্রাকৃতিক তন্তু হিসেবে এর ব্যবহার অব্যাহত আছে। পৃথিবীর সকল দেশের, সকল শ্রেণী পেশার মানুষ তুলা দিয়ে তৈরী কাপড় ও তুলাজাত অন্যান্য পণ্য ব্যবহার করে আসছেন। আমাদের দৈনিন্দিন জীবনের সাথে নিবিড় ভাবে মিশে আছে এই কার্পাস তোলা। প্রায় ৭ হাজার বছরের ইতিহাস আর ঐতিহ্যকে ধারণ করে এখনো টিকে আছে গফরগাঁও উপজেলা জনপদের এই নামকাইল চর।
Char Namkail is located in Barigaon village of Datter Bazar Union of Gafargaon Upazila of Mymensingh District, Bangladesh. Every year during floods the water of Brahmaputra river flows over this char. Floodwaters carry a lot of silt, making these pasture soils very fertile. Ever since the flood waters receded, the residents of the region have been producing a large amount of vegetables in this pasture.
Along with various types of vegetables, many valuable cash crops carpus cotton are produced on the fertile land. It is from this cotton that the yarn used for our wearables is usually made. Cotton fabrics made with carpus yarn are very comfortable to wear. A large amount of carpus was cultivated in this region since ancient times. Its continuity is still somewhat preserved.
In ancient times, the nearby upazila town was named Kapasia as a lot of carpus was cultivated.
Carpus cotton is considered to be the oldest crop in the history of human civilization. According to the information obtained from the archeological evidence, it is known that the use of carpus cotton started about seven thousand years ago. Today it continues to be used as a natural fiber. All countries of the world, people of all professions have been using clothes made of cotton and other products made of cotton. This corpus collection is closely related to our daily life. This eponymous char of Gafargaon upazila still survives with the history and tradition of about 7 thousand years.
