I read recently in an organic lawn care guide that you should water 15-30 minutes to start, then come back an hour or so and hit it with your deep watering. The first watering is to get the dry soil to open up and then you can flood it after the soil has relaxed.

Would love to see you do a deep dive on cultural practices for new sod vs established turf. I've got 2.5 week zoysia and trying to figure out why a few parts are super green but haven't rooted. I *think* applying the principles you've layed out here would be bad for my unrooted sod pieces, but I'm completely new to this and am not sure. Really need some sod KZbin right now!

Very well spoken Sir John. The way you are able to convey information out to your audience is very professional - comparable to College/University level. I’m glad I’ve found your channel (first time I was introduced was from watching LCNs feat. With your boop ortho). Anyways, France and Greece looked like a very good time and thanks again for all the work you put into making these videos.

Great information here! Since I just seeded my lawn a week and a half ago I’ve been watering 4 times a day for 15 minutes each time. Since there are no roots yet that’s kind of the point just to keep the seed moist but not wet. I think I’ll keep this up for another week or so now that I’m seeing germination, then back it off to once a day but longer and deeper waterings. After the first couple of more then i think twice a week should do it. Now that temps are already much cooler, the temps are definitely in my favor right now. I just really need to get this kbg pushed hard soon so I can get it mowed soon!

This is the reason everyone needs smart irrigation controllers. My Rachio automatically adjusts duration for me based on weather. Summer it runs for 174 minutes (as of yesterday morning) winter, it might be 38 minutes (SoCal here).

+radiomantodd I don’t disagree. About 18 years ago I went to a demo of the Weather Reach Reciever ET controller. I think they’re great and at the time there wasn’t enough antennas to cover everyone. They’ve come a long way

Be cool for you to use a bucket of soil that's dry, then an inch of water, then 3", and finally what level you want all while using the probe to show it work for depth if moisture. Just not sure if the device measures at the tips or along the shafts.

Hey John, I’m late to this party but I have the same sprinkler. Which setting do you think gives you the best coverage? I’m typically using the shower setting with a notch or two in to get more water drops closer to the sprinkler head.

Awesome tool that I need. I took on a project with Netafim drip tubes in my yard with the notion of watering at the root level to save water and be "green" but never know if the soil is moist other than my screwdriver test and by looks of the blades. Now I can get a "visual" as to how moist the soil instead of guessing. I was wonder if the escape artist at 7:30 would make an appearance.

Great vid! I live in Dallas Tx and have bermuda that was laid down about 9 months ago. I notice when I have my irrigation set for 20 min hi notice maybe about 45 minutes later water is slowly draining out of my lawn. What exactly does It do that? However if I water For 10 or 12 minutes I don’t get nearly as much water drainage

This was very helpful. I have one of those cheap probes but never tried it in the lawn DUH! I just tested a few spots that have been struggling. First off it isn't dry so that helps me at least understand it's something else causing the dry spots. I also noticed it was hard to get the probe into the soil so it could be compacted. Any suggestions on how to soften the soil? I do use your humic BioStim pack but I think that will take years to get the soil softened.

I’m a huge animal lover so I have to ask. What’s his or her name!? And Lawn question as well. Just went through your soil series and it makes a ton of sense logically that the health of your soil is EXTREMELY important. Bought a house over the winter and previous owner didn’t take care of it at all. Super bumpy and uneven lawn. I want my daughter to be able to run around without her feet hurting. With that said I was going to level with soil/compost but watched a video where it wasn’t recommended because we don’t know what is exactly is in the soil, so I thought sand then. But then I got to thinking, why do I care what’s in the soil if I’m going to be repairing the current soil I have anyways Just wanted your two cents on my thought process of leveling with a mix of like 70/30 with 30% being sand. I presume sand will be much easier to level out, yet I do want some actual organic matter from compost.

Glad your back!!! I’ve heard of some people watering in shifts (ex. 15min at a time, x3 rounds on the same morning) any thoughts on watering for 1 chunk of time vs splitting it up in shifts on the same day?

Okay, so question for Señor John.... I'm in Central Texas, where extreme summer weather is the norm (25 of the last 27 days have been over 100 degrees!!), and keeping the soil even remotely moist is a biotch. I have to water in split waterings to avoid water running off and onto the street. I leveled my lawn with sand this season, so I'm hoping that'll help prevent water run off. Any tips on improving the hardest of the most clay of clay soils in "the desert of the real"?
@Lawncology5 жыл бұрын
this takes time but can be done if you've got one whole day to do it. water about 15 minutes, wait 30, water again 15 minutes, wait 30. water 20 minutes, wait 30. water 20 again, wait 30. water 45 and see how well its absorbing.

@Lawncology5 жыл бұрын
+Dan Blubaugh I wouldn’t say accurate... within .5 maybe... but the more wet the soil is the more it will read the water pH. Once it’s mid line level on moisture it’s probably pretty close

Welcome back!! Lawn still looking lush. I live in Central Ca and for the most part it’s a warm area to live in. Winter gets about 40 degrees in the early am and I’m having a hard time deciding what kind of grass to plant or possibly sod in my backyard. Fescue struggles out here bc of the heat, I have Tiffway in my front yard which I reel mow... it’s very healthy but it goes dormant. Question, what would be a good turf that I could reel mow and have year round? Rye dies off because of the scorching summer.. any suggestions? Thank you for your channel. Very good channel!
