From the time of Adam? Yes! The Conan books were set in times before the flood, a mythical era and world created by a young man from Texas named Robert E. Howard in the 1920's. He was a strange fellow who was also a body builder. Howard wrote and had published his first story at age 18, and wrote many more until he committed suicide at age 30 over grief at the death of his mother... "Sword and Sorcery" is the term for this kind of fantasy and Conan is the king of this style.

If they think a movie from 1982 is old, then have them watch Lawrence of Arabia (1962) but let them guess the age of the movie at the end.
@ebbhead206 ай бұрын
No, theu think most of things in 80's movies are brand new. So they need to watch either a little film about what was around in 1888 or so. Like when jack the ripper was doing his stuff they could call each other on the phones.. Only a business or the upper classes would have a phone but its around none the less... They need to understand that cars and phones and planes came to be between 1880 and the 1930s. They sound lioe it shouldn't be there in the 1980s but i was there about 100 years before that. Now why they won't teach them about the industrial age idk.? Are they supposed to think india is modern maybe.? Well the rest if the world knows why india and certain other places are so far behind.. It how you handle your wealth. India didnt really let the infrastructure grow when the rest of the world did. A bit like China in some places or north korea.. Its just all for the the powers that be and nevermind the common folk. Now that should be a story they want and need to hear. But they dont touch on that whole thing. Bill Burr even talked about that several times.. I thought i had seen poverty until i went to India.

That wheel the kids were pushing at the beginning was to break / grind stones to get the ore. Ore mined from the earth among the stones to become steel.
@Kissamiess6 ай бұрын
I think in the director's commentary they said it was a grain mill. Of course in the story its purpose is to weed out the weak and train the bodies of those who survive. Not real practical in reality, but this is fantasy.
@Uriel772006 ай бұрын
@@Kissamiess interesting. I read the book as well as many of the other Conan novels. They stated it was to mine ore in those and that made sense considering the "Riddle of Steel" theme.
@Kissamiess6 ай бұрын
@@Uriel77200 It'se been years since I listened to that commentary, but I think what the director said. The original plan was just to have a wheel to push, but someone came up with a purpose for it, which was to grind grain. Grinding rocks for ore is sound like writer's interpretation, but it's equally valid. My personal idea is that those people who took the Cimmerian children as slaves were just loosely affiliated with Thulsa Doom, like being temporary allies or mercenaries and the kids were part of their payment. They didn't care about the riddle of steel like Doom did, just getting strong slaves.

Part of the lore is that Cumerians never pray to Crom. Crom despises weakness, so he considered his followers praying to him an insult; they should be able to fight for themselves. He rewards action, not prayer. But, somehow, I think defiant Conan's prayer would give Crom a chuckle.

Just happy to see others enjoying this movie. While not one to one with the original stories, this movie so far as been one of the better interpretations of a few of the Conan short stories. It, and it's sequel are movies I used to watch a lot when visiting my Aunts who were big into movie collecting in the 80's and 90's. The original creator of Conan, Robert E. Howard, started writing his stories when he was about 25, had several finished long form stories, and several more that he had finished notes on. Sadly, for reasons we don't understand still, Conan's creator killed himself shortly after his mother passed, and he was 30 at the time, passing away in 1936. There have been decades of fights for the rights of the stories due to publishers forcing writers to mess with said stories, to make them into novels, and even making the creator's non Conan stories into Conan ones, and other outside authors making Conan stories that didn't always fit in. Finally about 13 years ago, one man got the rights to all of Howard's works, picked one company to make Conan games (which have come out well so far), re-published the original stories in collections, and is moving for an indie comic company to produce new stories, and draw in original stories as well, with a carful eye to keep things right. And they are still in the works to make a Conan live action series happen. It's been a bit of a struggle to find a place that will make Conan without altering it's style.
