I was 11 then. Let's not romanticise this time period - there was a hell of a lot of utter shit then, just as with every period before and after. But the cream of the early 80's was as good as any era in pop. However, once you get into truly amazing pure musical creativity like the Classical greats (Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler, Prokofiev, etc, etc) it really gives you context for pop, and you realise just how shallow it is by comparison.

I was there in the 80's. I bought "Colour By Numbers" when it first hit the store shelves. Enjoyed every track, and I mean every track. The song arrangement, the lyrics, the un-mentioned album hero Helen Tery, and George's voice made this a thoroughly soothing album. But it's amazing how one TV show can add a different facet to something you once thought in the beginning. VH1's "Behind The Music - Culture Club" when George openly admitted that all his songs were about, and to John. And it's like, 'wow, that puts a new spin on things'. Nonetheless, decades later, these songs still resonate a good vibe to all of us who were there during that time. Memories become alive, once again.

After 36 years, I still love this song - it brings back such memories. I used to listen to it on my Walkman on my way home from a crappy late-night job at a downtown Toronto hotel during the summer of 1984. At the time, I was very young and very smitten by a another staff-member who clearly had no interest in me. In my own mind, I was the "victim" and the line "You're always there like a ghost in my dreams" rang very true. Nothing ever came of it and I eventually left the job - and the object of my desire went on to enjoy a highly successful international career in the hotel business. I was considerably less successful - and my life hasn't been a particularly happy one.. whoever said it was fair?

@@musicus11 That question, dear John, its a small demonstration that some people only know their shopping mall in their city. They did not leave their state only to neighboring states. And that is why they are so ignorant. They think that their little territory is the world, the best and nothing else matters. Arriba John and arriba Canada (I live in NJ)

Sheesh I was just a kid when this came out … it wasn’t until a couple of years later that I became smitten in love over spring break snd ended up with my high school sweetheart. Those familiar feelings still are so much alive

An absolute classic this, George's voice, the lyrics, the musicians - all terrific. Looking at Culture Club's best song's, and this is certainly one of them, they're always about love, but never in a corny way or oversentimental, it's music from the soul.

its also rare to hear a fretless bass,Brings back so many memories this song,,, I knew a few victims of love, indeed i was one,in 84 i became a dad, sadly only a weekend dad,and what a massive price to learn such a simple thing,Selfless love,,(someone we really do put first, and learn life isant about ourself its about everyone else) she joined in with my music alot, and without me knowing won natonal champion at singing, and now im helping her daughter who has writen songs since she was 3 played guitar 3 years+ and is only age8 now, with the music as well as her mums voice,at16 it will be upto her if she wants to be a star.

Boy George's singing voice has become a lot deeper now. I still love listening to the uploads of him singing this song with Culture Club live now though.

Like I mentioned in a comment above. Hats off to Roy for writing the music for the Piano melody and Jon for the Drums. Jon and Roy always bring the music, melody, and Rythm together to compliment George's Lyrics. This was perfection. Yes, Mikey has a hand in it with the bass. It took all 4 members to make CC one of the greatest Bands ever. I can listen to 'Victims' more than one a day.

Yeah but it's much better now than it was in early 2000s. He's been sober for 9 years and you can hear the difference. I don't know if it'll ever be what it was though.

In the Culture Club From Karma To Calamity documentary Boy George said that he and Roy were the main songwriters but yes it takes everyone in a band put a great song together.
