The situation of culture during the Polish People's Republic was very difficult as it was brought under control just like any other area of life in a totalitarian state. Gierek's decade meant for the culture to be more open to the Western influences, but in the country numerous works were created, too. Thay would include TV, cinema, theatre (both traditional and experimental). The 1970s witnessed not only the emergence of the so-called independent culture fostered mostly by students but also the creation of underground publishing houses.
