Culture shock is a very real challenge when traveling, but we've noticed it feels like a smoother transition when you have an introduction and enough mental prep to know what you'll encounter on your trip. We've gathered all the shocking details from our experience in Ecuador so that you know exactly what to expect when visiting.
1. Most businesses only take cash
2. Get cash any opportunity you can!
3. Ecuador's official currency is the U.S. dollar
4. Ecuador mints their own coins
5. Tipping not necessary or expected
6. Services cheap, products expensive
7. Residents share their banking information freely
8. You'll likely get sick
9. Medicine affordable & readily available
10. Strict COVID precautions
11. Cop corruption is a thing
12. We were shocked to see most friends and locals choose to bribe and be bribed by the police.
13. Many holidays may disrupt vacation plans
14. Uber ridesharing is illegal but common
15. Late-night rideshares not guaranteed, taxis expensive
16. Children buy alcohol for parents in small towns
- Everyone delivers!
17. Businesses have free delivery
18. Trash cans rarely available
19. No working federal mail system
20. You must pay to use public restrooms
21. Flushing toilet paper will clog toilets
22. Machine dryers for laundry extremely uncommon
23. Air conditioning not necessary in Quito's chilly weather
24. Gas stoves are common
25. Google business listings usually not accurate
26. Weather forecast always wrong in Baños
27. Infrastructure is Ecuador's biggest problem
28. Dog poop everywhere
29. Steak temperatures inconsistent
30. Coffee isn't great
31. F-bombs on the radio
32. Plastic gloves offered with chicken wings
33. Cuy (guinea pig) is a delicacy
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

// ABOUT THE STATUS GO
The Status Go is a vlog channel and online blog (thestatusgo.blog) that serves as a visual representation of Monica's bucket list, a virtual dream board. As a dedicated diary to the internet of her journey to see the world, she is set to live a remarkable life even with an invisible disability, Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Together with Matt, her lovely boyfriend, they explore the world and live out their big, globetrotting dreams. Holding his hand, she conquers challenges from having a debilitating disease as a digital nomad with MS. Their ultimate objective is to set the status quo to GO.
By documenting how to travel freely with a disability and highlighting resources to facilitate physical and emotional challenges from MS, The Status Go is filling in the current shortage of travel-related content related to Multiple Sclerosis on the web. As a digital nomad with a chronic illness, Monica Lynne also delivers strategies to accomplish a similar lifestyle as an entrepreneur living abroad around the world while also safely nursing a condition. Featuring a content series per country, The Status Go is an online travel blog providing travel-based content from a solution-oriented perspective to challenging symptoms from MS and other demanding ambitions.
"Multiple Sclerosis (MS) makes it challenging to keep my balance, walk a trail, hike the mountains, swim in waterfalls, and speak my mind. But why let that stop me?" -- Monica Lynne

I am an Ecuadorian who lives overseas. Most of the comments you've made about Ecuador seem to be true, but my question is; didn't you have something positive to say about Ecuador? It is fine to say all the shocking experience, but I am sure out of respect for the host country you should have included some positive experiences you've had. This is just common courtesy when you visit a new country and culture. I can say a few shocking experiences about the US when I was living there, but for the most part I consider the US part of my life and I care about its people and culture. I hope you don't go around other countries finding and flashing only shocking experiences and making fun of its people. Please check the plunk of your own eye before you shock others with your finding about my humble people of Ecuador.

Ease off here, its just a way of saying this will be different to the US or that will be a surprise. It seems to be traditional with youtube things to start with "shocking" or "Will Shock you" as an attention grabber, Its not out and out critisism, but more advice for the unexpected for tourists. The other thing, their list of surprises is much shorter than their list of "Likes" that would probably take all day to enumerate. 🙂

Yes, there are some good "shocks" that could've been mentioned, as in nice unexpected surprises, that foreign tourists or new immigrants wouldn't expect but would enjoy.

Hi there! Thank you very much for watching. This is just one of a few videos we have. We actually chose to stay in Ecuador because of how much we loved it. I think a watch of that video (Why we chose to move to Quito during the pandemic) might clear up some misconceptions you might have. I enjoy your video, but honestly, I have lived in Ecuador for five months, and my experience is very different. I have not had to bribe anyone! I live in Cuenca, and we do not have the transportation experiences you had. We only use taxis or the Tranvia. Tipping is something to be very careful with. If Americans tip too much, the locals will not get waited on because they cannot tip in that way. We love Ecuador!

Agree with you totally... I have travelled to many rich countries . included de countries that mentioned and in some cases worse than ECUADOR... I live in Ecuador and never robbed or payed extra money. I have been to London and New York and it is full of scammers in the streets. There are people dressed like clowns and charge money 10. 20 dollars for a picture . with your own mobile phone.....and poo in the streets of the dogs walkers. ..and so many things.... People have to travel with an open mind and remember YOU ARE NOT IN YOUR HOUSE OR COUNTRY ...

My friend was killed in a rich section upstate NY in her own home. They said it was the son of the man she was married for 27 years. He was rich and much older than her but they loved each other very much he was a widow with 3 adult children he told my friend do n t worry about being left with nothing. I gave my children their part, everything is yours. I guess one of his 3ckids was not happy and killed her! Because he wanted more... my friend took good care of him for 5 years! He had a stroke and was big and heavy. She really loved him but died... and she was very sad.. and we told her to leVe the town she used to say. But it reminds me of... had many beautiful memories with him. I love this o earful town. She was killed in the peaceful little town.

I hope Ecuador never become a first world country like USA. Drugs, sex, abortion, trans this, trans that, homeless, wars. Spending and spending, hoarding.. never heard of that etc etc. So many crazy things going on in schools. Parents don't even have to know... everything is confidentiality, even if they are your children, mind your own business is their motto so if you see someone dying on the street? Just pass by, be careful.. too Crazy for me.

@@rosaarodriguez9968 so sorry to hear that 😱😱😱. People in poor countries think that Rich countries are like paradise.. let me tell you. Those rich countries have bigger problems than poor countries .. .drug problems . Children killing other children at school. People pushing you on a passing train.. . hospitals full of sick people letting people died because there are not beds .or not enough nurses to doctors to cure the sick..my friend died in a rich and safe country. He was killed by a car in a sebra crossing.. we traveled to so many poor countries and we never had any problem but his rich and safe country killed him.... .my opinion our poor country has so much to offer we could live so comfortable, the only problem is that we don't know how to enjoy and make a good use of what we have.. enjoy your life 👍👍👍

In my experience, the only time that alcohol cannot be sold or served (and not supposed to be consumed) is from noon on Friday prior to election day (which is always on Sunday) util noon the following Monday. For several months after covid's arrival (officially on 12 Mar 2020) - and after we were permitted to go outside again on weekends - alcohol could not be sold on Sundays. Although instant coffee is typically served in small eateries, there are excellent varieties of coffee available that can be purchased as beans or freshly ground. Happy exploring!

I have only visited Ecuador, but I have lived in other Latin American countries. I learned to get to know my local policia, and to compensate them if I needed any special favors. For example, if I was going to return to the States for an extended visit, I would inform the police of my extended absence and also give un regalito (a little gift), usually in the form of cash. I never had any problems with my residence being robbed or vandalized. It pays to establish good relations with the POLICIA/GUARDIA.

Great video . My wife if from Ecuador and I have visited several times…both with her and on official travel when I was in the US Army. Ecuador is, indeed, a beautiful and inexpensive country. I do have some comments, though. Tipping-it is not customary to tip it n Ecuador. In hotels and other places that that cater to Americans, they may expect a tip, however, because they have become used to receiving them. Leaving a few small denomination coins is one thing, but please do not leave more than some small change. They will come to expect it. So, don’t ruin it for others. Meat- often times raw meat is just left, unrefrigerated, for hours. Whether in a fancy restaurant, a neighborhood shop operated out of someone’s home, or a kiosk on the sidewalk. Police corruption-do not offer money to police unless they say that you can take care of the infraction then and there. Otherwise, the officer could accuse of bribing him/her and extort even more money from you.

When I purchased my new " under construction " condo in Cuenca in 2013, it was mandatory for me to be able to flush toilet paper. Most new construction in Cuenca is to US standards. I had centralized gas (no tanks) and centralized hot water. Never ran out of gas or hot water. My outdoor grill and heater both required propane tanks. Vendors troll the streets. I'd just yell from my balcony, and they would deliver to my condo.

I can sympathise with some of your findings about Ecuador. For americans coming here and renting or intending to buy a car, something to note, The gas is sold in US gallons, but the gasoline is rated in RON not AKI as in the states, We have Extra at 85 RON which equates to 80 AKI and Super at 95 RON which is 90 AKI. Its the RON number you see on the pumps here. Also theres no self service, or card operated automated pumps. Its usually cash at the pump to the attendant, or by card again by way of the attendant, just tell him how much you want, usually its by price, as in $5 / $10 or "Llena de tanque" Be careful with modern cars, as they will ask if you want it rounding up, that is if its $20.48, do you want $21 worth. Get it wrong and you can have a problem technically with a modern car.)

Regulates the mercury in your blood? That’s… uh… crazy. Also, for most people taking an anti-altitude sickness meditation isn’t necessary. I go from sea level to Quito at least once per year and don’t suffer altitude problems unless I travel higher and get to the 3500 to 4000m range.

Im pretty sure that probably the weather issue is cause of diffenrent units outside US you probably read 30° and assume farenheit, but we use celsius here 30° C is about 86° F is hot and humidity makes it worst. like today tem there is 25°C so 76°F, we use metric in most of the world so read celsius, distances are in metres or kilometres and bottles are in litres. You need to be aware fo this stuff to avoid going full winter gear to a hot city on la costa.

I have heard that people from the US coming up to Canada have tummy troubles with the food. It's richer and clean. I know when I go down to the US I have nausea from the food because the quality is a lot lower and they have so much more additives and such in their food where here in Canada we are not allowed to have. Maybe that is the reason why people are having tummy issues when they go down to Ecuador? It is higher quality and a shock to your stomach.

In Quito their is just a rainy (fall) and a dry (spring) season. But the temperature is about the same all year around... and in my mind absolutely perfect! It can get up to 70-73deg during the day and as low as 50deg at night but those are the extremes. Homes in Quito are virtually never even built with heat or AC because it is never needed. Crack a window if you are warm or put on a sweater if you are cool. As far as cloudiness... yes it is cloudy/overcast about 70% of the time. Quito is in a valley surrounded by snow-capped Andes Mountains so the clouds kind of hover in there. But on the rare occasion it is clear the views are amazing. But the other cool thing about Ecuador is you can virtually drive to whatever "season" you desire at any time of year. If you want winter- just drive up to the snow capped mountain (very cold year around)... if you want summer- just drive to the coast (very hot year around) or anywhere in between.

I moved here 18 months ago. Definitely keep a couple of twenties in the console of the car. I've needed them 3 times out on the coast. Uber isn't illegal per se, it's just that Ecuador requires a different license type for drivers to run a car related business. If they have a type B like me, they are supposed to charge for a ride. Also, don't forget to warn your subscribers how risk tolerant people are here. They drive dangerously and construction sites look high risk. Very odd to this risk averse American.

Coffee and milk are subjective. I love Ecuadorian milk, it's actual, natural milk, delicious. I consider milk in the US just white water, too processed to still be called milk, just bland. I also like the coffee in Ecuador better. Americans tend to throw more things into their coffee, so that it diverges from its original taste, so same logic... is it still coffee? If you tip some locals won't appreciate it, since it changes expectation. No locals ever do it.

Too many people on the 'go' fail to grasp the very basic of living outside your familiar paradigm. Foreign countries are called 'foreign' because they are foreign. The obvious challenges are language, politics, education, religion, food, customs, courtesy (or lack of it), honesty, criminal activities, economics, how the legal system works ($), poverty, and distrust. It's different sometimes to the extreme. Foreign adventurers who migrate typically don't stay long and cluster in the English bar scene and English speaking anything. It is not like anything you thought you knew from You Tube and the media telling you it's is heaven. Before you migrate to anywhere in the world my best advise is learn the language first. The challenge of not speaking or understanding at all levels is usually the ultimate 'deal' breaker.
