This version of Cumberland Gap, favoured by Old Time players, has three parts and is crooked, with a 6-bar C section. In this fiddle tutorial I show each section in turn, with suggestions for open string drones. I use on-screen sheet music, and a free pdf of this sheet music is available to subscribers (see below).

Hey, Chris, nice job. This is a local favorite in our old time jams here in North Carolina. You mentioned droning on the A string - a lot of OT players tune their low G string up to an A and drone there as well. This is a great tune for fiddle and clawhammer banjo.

Great breakdown of the tune. Glad to see it played the traditional old-time way. Sounds great. Great teacher. Thank you.

I heard this tune for the first time about two weeks ago. I was listening to Bruce Molsky on Amazon music with my grandson of 5 and he kept having me play it over and over so I became determined to learn to play it myself. So I've been slowing your video down to half speed and I've been working on it. You're a really good instructor. I'll have it learnt completely in another day or two, then a few months of playing it and I'll have it down. Just like to say thank you and I've subscribed.

Thanks Chris. The lesson and guide and the musicological comments a delight as ever. Have not heard 'donkey's years' since I left my old job - my manager was a Brit, and it was a long time ago. Regards from Chicago - BW

Donkeys Years! As soon as I said it, I guessed that Americans would meet it with amusement or incomprehension. Just as well I don't take myself too seriously!
