I do the same thing but use a 18" alignment bar that I ground down to a point. Comes in more handy when they are more recessed as well. Old timers like to give you shit but I don't care. They can continue to fill their armpit with nasty diesel oil. Or better yet drop a full filter on their face and make a huge mess.

Was driving a new truck with a Cummins engine once years ago. It developed a loud screaming noise. The boss said you are near a Cummins dealer. Tell them to check it out and change the oil. A large hose clamp was in the turbo. I looked under the truck before I climbed in The drain plug was hanging by about 1 thread. Luckily the plug was at the front where it was easy to see.

For those who dont know. . .Its NOT punching a hole in it that removes it. Punch hole in it to drain the filter. To get the filter to unscrew, you just need to hit the filter, whether with a dead blow hammer or the wooden handle of a sledge. The point is to break the rubber oil filter seal that has become dry and stuck and wont let filter turn. Punching a hole in the filter will not always work if you dont shock the filter hard enough to break seal loose.
@Toolaholic76 жыл бұрын
I have see them loose installed by someone else.Complaint is a oil leak and the fix is simple,tighten it up by hand only.Make sure the gasket from the old oil filter is not stuck to the block too.I have done it and caught it in time,forgot to check for this wondering why it was not tightening up.

I don’t put the drain plug back on until the new oil filter is on cause oil will come out the pan once u drop the filter not always but sometimes it will so I usually do filter first then drain plug

Hey yall i got a 2001 cummins ISM. The oil starts out at 65 psi then drops into the teens after warming up and it drops at the filter head Ive ruled out pump, guage, leaks, injectors, jakes while everything on the valve train looks good. I had a 12 hour diagnostic that ensured the internals had normal ware. I recently had the injectors in cylinder 2 replaced as well as a rocker arm on the same cylinder replaced. I used the truck for two days and had to bring it back to the same shop. The mechanic informed me that there was a wire broken on the number 2 jake assembly. And now insists that it wasnt from the work they did but dosent know whats wrong with it please any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

My theory is the oil plugs tighten on their own some how. We have a couple cat motors and they have 1 1/2 drain plug. I've serviced the same truck twice in a row, I was the only one to touch the drain plug and that son bitch was tight as hell had to use the ez red 3/4 drive extended ratchet. The one that's 3 foot long lol. And I know I put it on "hand tight" last service lol
@KoonTrucking6 жыл бұрын
I agree. I know those speedco guys are pretty bad about over tightening them. Every time we get a truck like that I ask them who did it last time 90% of the time it was speedco the other 10% TA ! Haha

Whats the point of punching the oil filter besides the fact that you dont gotta worry about tipping it and spilling oil or it draining out around the filter when you take it off?

Blaze Box that's it, you don't make a mess when it's not full of old oil taking it off, plus it's not as heavy!
