You actually souped up a Clessie Cummins N14 to 600 ponies wow!!!. How reliable was the engine at 600 ponies, as I am worried about bottom end integrity especially the crankshaft , main and big end bearings. Last stock factory N14,s were 525,s Clessie Cummins never thought of extracting more ponies out of the N14 block for fear of compromising reliability . How did you squeeze seventy five extra ponies and not affect the N14,s reliability?. Love to fit a souped up N14 in a 6x4 Scammell Crusader, eighteen speed overdrive semi auto gearbox (transmission) based on a 6speed Allison CL750 driving a , 44.000 lb rated Rockwell SQ SQRD single reduction double drive bogie with short ratio diffs . Sixty plus on the Motorway(Freeway) and climb the side of a house, one cool British wagon.

@basiltaylor8910 Жыл бұрын
Just like the old NH 280,s they wanted to go, so driving an NH fitted wagon is similar to a good sports car. In the UK around 1975 Ford Europe introduced the Transcontinental COE , Cummins offering two N14 engine options ,sold in UK as the E290 and E350,.The E350, over three hundred thirty ponies at the wheels ,serious pony count for a late ,70,s wagon. Stirring thirteen of Mr Fullers best constant mesh gears and overdrive, with a good driver weened off Atkinson Borderers or ERF A, Series, a Transcontinental with the E350 can do eighty eighty five miles an hour , it flew!!!!.

When it comes to big truck engines, I’m a cat guy, but the red top was a great motor
@ENGINESHOPJOE3 жыл бұрын
When I started working back in the 1970's a customer tried to get me to buy a truck with a 1693. He had one and it was so noisy but he had 550 thousand on it. He was hauling pipe up to the "alaskan pipe line they were going to build" He did that for about 3 years and sold his truck and retired. Looking back i wish I had. He told me they dont let detroit 2 cycles up there as they dont do well in the extreme cold. I am referring to the company he hauled pipe for. only cat, allis chalmers (yes they had a truck engine then) and cummins. I was actually hired by cat in 76 but went to cummins in 78. The rest as they say is history.

Had a couple of trucks that were powered by the N14. First was a 460 HP 18 speed 379 Pete and the second was an N14+ 525 HP Coronado. Amazingly smooth power delivery and great fuel economy. Wish I had bought the Pete and the trailer when I had the chance…$40,000 for both and fuel was $0.35/L at the pump back then, with $1.50-$2.00/mile. 🤦🏻♂️

Still a cummins but it's far better than the junk they have out now. Loved me an ntc tt 475 back in the day. Good build though.
@ENGINESHOPJOE3 жыл бұрын
The most common problem with the TT 475s was the air system that drove the mechanical variable timing rack. Once that stopped working they were hard to start in cold. They updated it so it was oiled later in a field fix but it still was the Achilles heel on the engine. They were the pulling beasts back in their day. They were still negged by the liner to block issues that caused coolant seepage out of head gaskets. That was fixed by the N14 going forward.
@JCA-Z3 жыл бұрын
@@ENGINESHOPJOE i agree and i know you know your engines with what you stated, my hats off to you. The mechanics brother had a 110 inch 362 pete with a tt ntc 475 and you're right that thing could scoot. From what i rember most if not all cummins had that problem with the liners getting pitted and leaking coolant . god bless and have a great day.

The red tops as they call them were 500 -525 horse and it was a selling bling thing. Do you remember the 450 Magnum series with chrome covers and crome after cooler cover and crossover ( that was an 855 BCIV last gen before the N14 hit the streets) They came with black (origanaly called bluke on the cummins spray can) covers that had polished aluminum tops. The fleet 435 and 450 horse spec engines had black stamped steel covers. They were all interchangable unless they came off an engine that had no jakes then they would not bolt on the jake because of the oil solenoid's height. Yes they were quite an engine. Cummins quit supplying ECM;s for them last year. you would have to buy aftermarket if you can find one. They do have an ECM upgrade kit but it is only for one CPL 525 horse and pull out your coin for that kit.

Yes.. I started at cummins in 78 and the engines had to be rebuilt around 400-500 k miles. The N14 could, if maintained, go a million miles. The 500 and up HP usually needed a set of head gaskets (compression ring started to leak) around 550-750K. Then rock on. There was a guy who had two and he took great care of them. We overhauled his N14 at 1,345,801 miles. I still remember the mileage as i was just amazed. He ran Buffalo to LA. We overhauled it because at idle his oil pressure buzzer and check engine light came on. He had around 8psi hot at idle. The cam bushings were worn out and that was the cause of oil pressure loss on those engines if they had high miles.

@ENGINESHOPJOE20 күн бұрын
Look for a Recon stamp on the heads usually on the exhaust side in the center of the 4 water jacket cups. If aftermarket heads were used there is no way to know without paperwork from the repair- if one was ever needed. The engine is capable of running 1 million miles. The most mileage I saw on a stock engine was 1,342,000 miles. The owner was a regular at the Cummins distributor I worked at and I put the engine in service and then we overhauled it 10 years later. Pretty cool.

I have n14 select plus blacktop 460hp what's the difference between redtop ? And what do I need to do to get to 525hp? Cpl 2591
@ENGINESHOPJOE3 жыл бұрын
All you need to do is replace the injectors with part number3411767PX ( you can get 3411767RX cheaper but PX is better warranty). Then you need to have a software change. The calibrations are still available for the 8303 ecm but if you have an 8300 or 6662 ( the last 4 of ecm part number) im pretty sure they all will take the calibration. Ask cummins about the software upgrade before you buy injectors. Your cpl will change to 2592. You can go to full 525 hp@1850 torque. But your drive line might not be able to take the power depending on the driveline parts ratings. If you decide to do this i would recommend a top 2 calibration. That is where you have 1650 torque in all but the top two gears then it is 1850.

@@MrSehka77 "Redtop" was just a visual that you had jakes and were at or above 500 horsepower. You could order the engine with out engine brakes. Fleets had a lot of non braked engines. It saves upfront cost. All red tops have Jakes factory installed. oil temp- 200 is great. If you pulled 80k up donners pass and had 245 oil temp at the top of the hill id say your in good shape. Most under pull oil Temp is around 215-235 degrees Fahrenheit. If the oil gets to 247 you log a fault for oil temp. No faults - no oil temp worries. You want the oil temp up there to boil out moisture that condenses in the engine. There is an oil thermostat in the oil cooler that controls oil temperature.

@@MrSehka77 Take an oil sample at your next oil change and send it to a lab like als or what ever is near to you. Have someone you trust look at the results. The engine was in storage for years. We change oil and crank them to build oil pressure and give all the parts time to get a good oil film built up. Cranking speed is 160 rpm. Running at idle is 750 rpm. Almost 400% faster. Second we verify the fuel pump seals are still good and it can pull fuel uphill tank to pump. If you manually prefill a fuel system you can temporarily mask that issue. We have shelves of used starters so we dont care about starter life. If the buyer wants a starter we put a new one on before we ship it. We are a few old guys who live by if i wouldn't buy it for myself I won't sell it to you.
