I basically have the same type of truck you have, crew cab chevy 84' 1 ton with single rear wheels, was also a camper special that had 2 battery trays, hydroboost brakes, and it was a manual so it had the higher trans tunnel, installed the cummins over a year ago and have tripled my MPG and increased my pulling power to boot. I have it straight piped for now but like you, i'm going to make it more comfortable to drive for long hauls. There are Mechanical cruise controls you could potentially install on the truck to make it easier for those longer drives.

I got done with the same swap a few months ago. 1983 K30 dually 4x4. Went from a dog 350 getting 6MPG to having gobs of torque and getting 22MPG. I was lazy with the exhaust and stuck it through the hood. It is a little uncomfortable on long hauls especially if you're hauling heavy and can't use 5th gear. My 12 valve came out of a Ford F800 so I couldn't use the radiator, or fan, or intercooler, they were way too big. Used an aftermarket all aluminum radiator and dodge second gen intercooler. With some low pro electric fans. And a reman NV4500. It was a pain while doing the swap, but that first drive I knew it was all worth it. I didn't end up having to modify much either. Driveshafts fit. Pinion angle was right. Firewall cleared easy. Just fuel lines and throttle linkage had to be figured out, couldn't use the ones out of the F800. One thing I noticed after driving it for a while: I had gasoline fuel sending units in my gas tanks. When below half a tank I saw a steep decline in power. Turns out there is a difference between the gasoline and diesel sending units. The fuel return on the gasoline unit drops the fuel from the top of the tank and it falls and splashes. The diesel unit fuel return has a pipe that returns the fuel to the very bottom of the tank. I found that my fuel was foaming up and aerating the, causing a loss of power. I swapped them for the diesel units and that problem went away.

Jason thanks for watching. It's a totally different truck with a Cummins. It's capabilities far surpass what it use to be. Great build love the truck! My only question is how some people get the Cummins to fit without hitting the firewall? Then other people have trouble getting it in without damaging firewall? Just curious I'm sure it's a simple explanation.
@goingofftherails98774 жыл бұрын
good question Mark. If your truck is a 2wd , the driveline tunnel will be smaller, too cramped for the transmission . Secondly, what transmission you choose makes for a driveline interference. The NV4500 has the least amount of firewall interference than others, but I still had to beat the firewall upwards and the pinch weld to get it to fit. the steel is very malleable and does conform to a different shape with some work.

@@hunterdias3080 I will add some video in my next posting of the latch and intercooler. If you have watched Gale Banks you know that cool dense air is the key to making more power, so naturally the bigger the intercooler the cooler the air. But I made the decision to leave the trucks front clip as stock as possible and not cut and fit the dodge radiator and intercooler into my core support. I know this was the best choice now because I left my radiator,A/C , wiring, mounts, grill, lights, everything in place. The intercooler fit great behind the grill and my cooling system still works great. Might be suffering some power loss because of the smaller cooler, but that's a hard thing to know without a comparable set up. Keep watching and I will explain in later video.

Are you in Colorado?

Hi awesome build got a question for you being a 1990 and living in Colorado does it pass emissions. Thanks for the awesome video and I appreciate any feedback.
@goingofftherails98775 жыл бұрын
Jason. My Truck is registered as a farm truck. I have about 50 head of Yak and derive income from them, so I am exempt from Emissions. However I did go and talk to the emission people about a swap before I started. To my knowledge , if the engine is from a truck that is a newer model and your truck is similar in gvwr , then a swap is allowed as long as every emission related part is transferred from the donor truck to the older truck. Hope this helps

Cummins engines are great for Chevy Caprices, Ford Police Interceptors and Lincoln Town Cars. These are great giving gasoline the boot.

Would you do this build for profit?
@goingofftherails98775 жыл бұрын
A project like this is so satisfying when your doing it for the first time even though it can be frustrating at times . But I'm not sure it would be as satisfying or even profitable to build it for someone else. Every project/truck is different and there are so many variables , that it would be difficult to make a living at doing swaps. Thanks for asking anyway!

Cool truck! Im a dodge fan but I have a 1984 chevy c30 I'm gonna put a cummins and a 6 speed into one day trying to find the 12 valve engine and nv5600 trans on gonna throw in it
@goingofftherails98775 жыл бұрын
I would love to have a 6 speed trans as well. The 5 speed does well with 4.10 gears but I am going to switch to 3.73 in the near future and that may be when I'll wish for an extra gear

@@goingofftherails9877 have you looked at a g56?
@goingofftherails98775 жыл бұрын
@@oldcroneysgarage9739 I haven't ever seen g56 case out of a truck to gage size. My guess is you would have to do more drive line tunnel mods to fit a bigger case. My shift lever for my 4x4 T case is very close to my bench seat right now. I guess an option might be to move the engine closer to the radiator and use electric fans. Would be worth checking in to.

@@goingofftherails9877 a guy I watch on youtube put a g56 behind a 12 valve in a dodge but I'm pretty sure it's different for chevys. Might go check out v belt and son on youtube he works with a lot of 12 valve engines. I'm might be looking at converting my 1982 chevy c10/k20 to a Cummins with a 6 speed mines a single cab 4x4 with a Cadillac 425 big block its hard to find parts for a Cadillac 425 any where

the cummins weighs that much more than a cast iron big block? thats insane to me lol. i guess thats why those motors last forever. its basically a locomotive

Great video. I'm with you on the simplicity and ease of repair on the older trucks. I'm getting ready to put a 4 door square body on a C50 chasis. I would like to do the cummins swap and your video has some great information. Thanks! BTW nice footage of the needle hwy. you didn't pull the caboose up there did you?
