Been waiting on this one for ages...it's been 10 years since my grandmother died and Battenberg was her favourite. Feeling nostalgic and inspired to bake now!

Stumbled on this video as I'm making more time to enjoy my hobby of baking and was looking for inspiration. I'm American so I didn't have this growing up, but saw it in an episode of "Call The Midwife" years ago and have always been curious about it. After watching the first time I ordered a Battenberg pan. It's so much smaller than I imagined it. Anyway, I made it tonight for the first time. I piped the batter into the pan and it was much easier than spooning it in, I imagine. But the cakes are currently cooling, the marzipan is made and I cannot wait to take this to work tomorrow morning and show it off. Thanks for walking me through, Sally.

Holy pink cakes! This has been my favourite since I was a 70s born kid and first tried it when I was 4 in ‘78! Been a favourite ever since. Now, having the queens show me how to make my own whenever I want and not a glimpse of Mr Kipling anywhere to be seen… I’m in awe! Thank you kindly. - I can’t wait to chomp down!

I'm a 43-years old computer programmer and baking is just my occasional hobby. But I freaked out seeing I could buy a SPECIAL TIN for this!!! :o Yeah I'm perfectly normal middle-aged guy :D I really should let myself buy it (but our kitchen is already stuffed full of other stuff). Great video, I had frequent drooling which means you're doing it right. As always, it's a perfect video: instructions are clear, the camera shows stuff in enough detail, there are good tips, Sally is nice and genuinely enthusiastic. I love watching you, guys :)

Wonderful news to have a real Battenberg cake recipe from the Cupcake Jemma Channel - especially Sally, my favourite adorable girl - I always wanted to make it! So pretty cake and so elegant, and we in Hungary don't have it here.

Well, the name Battenberg is german. Some of them moved to Britain and later changed it to Mountbatten, which means the same, but in English. The cake however is 100% british, and only known in Germany as a British import, if people know it at all.

Now that looks like a great Battenberg cake. The things that you buy in the shops are tiny in comparison. My misses can’t bake so it’s up to me. I started baking earlier this year just after my 68th birthday. I’ve followed a few of your recipes and they are great. Thanks for this video. 👍

That is a much easier and prettier way to cover with the marzipan than the way I have done it. -rolling out a huge piece and then turning the cake over to cover it all. It’s very difficult to get crisp, squared off edges that way. I love the way you did it, cutting and covering one side at a time.

Looks beautiful! But I‘ve never seen it in Germany! It’s a British thing! Head over to Wikipedia 🤓: The first cake was baked in 1884 to celebrate Prince Louis of Battenberg marrying Princess Victoria, Queen Victoria’s granddaughter and Prince Philip’s grandmother. AND The large chequered patterns on emergency vehicles in the UK are officially referred to as Battenburg markings because of their resemblance to the cake. 🚑 So cool!

I hate marzipan too, generally, but if you haven't had the homemade kind, maybe give it a go. Make a tiny amount with the same proportions of almond and icing sugar as in this recipe (e.g. 30 g almond meal, 36 g icing sugar), pat it out, and put it on top of a slice of fruitcake or something to taste it. I don't know what they do to the commercial kind, but it's disgusting, while a small layer of the real thing is a lot more palatable to me personally.

I was always under the impression this Battenberg Cake (aliases: Domino Cake, Church Window Cake, Neapolitan Roll) is an unapologetically and uniquely British confection, having morphed into a confectionery symbol of the country since its creation in the late 1800s. Also, rumoured the cake was created as a wedding gift for Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Victoria (granddaughter of Queen Victoria) and paid tribute to England's newest royal family member by using his last name as the title of the confection. Due to the rise of anti-German sentiments across England during World War I, the prince eventually changed his family name to Mountbatten. The Battenberg Cake, however, lives on.
