One thing that stands out to me in the contrast between Sobel and Winters is that Sobel generally doesn’t know the names of the men under his command whereas Winters knows the men under his command from their voice alone.

This scene was mentioned in the book⬇️ As training continued throughout 1942, Sobel never tired of pushing the men to the brink of exhaustion, running them over the obstacle course and taking them on nine-mile runs with full packs, rifles and machine guns. Sobel’s favorite exercise was the Friday-night thirty-five-mile nonstop hike with full gear. He would order canteens to be filled with water at the start of the hike, and expected them to still be full when they got back. Harsh punishment awaited any man who sneaked a sip. “We were miserable, exhausted, and thought that if we did not get a drink of water we were certain to collapse,” Pvt. Burton “Pat” Christenson recalled. At the end of a march Sobel would check each man’s canteen to see that it was still full. Winters grew disgusted with Sobel’s increasingly harsh treatment of the men. Walking the ranks during inspection, Sobel would bark out, “dirty stacking swivel,” “dirty gun sight” or “dirty ears,” and dock the men leave time. Sometimes the punishments were just, sometimes they were not and other times they were sheer fantasy. It didn’t matter to Sobel, but it did to Winters, who was often ordered to come up with a list of infractions, real or imagined. Sobel’s habit of canceling leaves as punishment was not a hardship for the socially reserved Winters. While many of the men crossed the street to the Wagon Wheel or walked a short distance down the highway to the Hi-Dee-Ho to tip a few beers, Winters was just as happy remaining on the base. When he did go into Toccoa, it was often to attend church, where he was usually invited for dinner at the Sunday School superintendent’s home. Winters did take a short leave to meet his mother who, in what Winters felt was probably the biggest single adventure of her life, came to visit her son at camp.

I always like how despite sharing the feelings of his subordinates, Winters never engages in their complaints. He doesn't malign his subordinates or his superiors to the troops under his command because he knows that would be unprofessional, and counterproductive to troop morale. But at the same time, he doesn't punish them for expressing their thoughts. He hears what they have to say so he can deal with it in a professional manner. And more than that, not only does he neither confirm nor deny Randallman's complaints, he instead responds with a joke to lighten the mood of E-Company.

More sinister for me than the water issue is Sobel expecting Winters to find "infractions" among the men, not necessarily real ones - probably he fears Winters is too popular and wants him to put pressure on the men and lose popularity as a result. in times of war supply lines may be cut and you need to conserve essential materials all you can such as water. It was believed you could build the body’s resistance to thirst by withholding water and was a genuine training tactic. He wasn’t ‘’genius’’ at all. He was simply just hard and had incredibly high standards when he created an incredibly difficult training regiment that in turn, produced quality soldiers. That’s not genius to understand the premise that training is meant to be difficult and that you do indeed have to be disciplined and mentally tough to push through hard training, and if you do, you will be rewarded with good results from that hard training. Calling him ‘’genius’’ also ignores how Sobal wasn’t even that concerned for the men and didn’t even care about their success; he just cared about producing results to look good in front of his command.

David Schwimmer does an amazing job as Sobel and actually looks a lot like the real man. Was Sobel a good leader? Some argue that his harsh training style made Easy Co. perform well but I believe it had more to do with having other leaders like Winters and Lipton in their ranks. I have worked with and for guys like Sobel and without a reasonable and fair buffer who the troops truly believe cares about them to hold things together, morale and cohesion splinters. The men of Easy Company did not respect Sobel and that was evident in the way they pranked him and later his NCO’s refused to follow him into combat. By contrast, they would have done anything for guys like Winters and Lipton.

From what I can infer of his "real life epilogue" is that Sobel was indeed a miserable man. He died alone, estranged of his wife and children. He tried to commit suicide by shooting on his temple and survived the rest of his life blind. Died of malnutrition in a VA hospital. No one likes to speak ill of the dead. But if that isnt testament of his personality I dont know what is. He probably had a personality disorder. Whether if was Bipolar or Borderline, and the war probably didnt do any favors.

A nuance I like about Sobel's character is that even though his trainings are clearly brutal, they make sense. You can absolutely expect your men to be low on water and not be able to drink in the field. You can expect that sunday dinner gets interrupted by shelling and they have to run. While his interpersonal and tactical skills were obviously lacking, he clearly knew how to prepre his men for battle.

Sobel's behavior inspired cynicism in the men and turned their thoughts to revenge against him, instead of the mission and getting better at their jobs. He failed to inspire the sense of self-motivation that makes both the individual and the unit he's a part of superior. He had no feel for people, esp. our people. The Revolutionary War volunteer general Baron von Steuben, who trained Washington's troops at Valley Forge, famously said, "When I order a Prussian soldier to do something, he does it. But for the American it is necessary to explain WHY we need it done."

David Messer not really. He facilitated training, yes, but he was breaking his men for the sake of his own insecurity. There was a good period of time between when he was outed and when the invasion occurred. Enough that the only benefit of the physical training they performed was only effective enough to provide them with mental toughness (which any self respecting paratrooper should have already possessed). He punished people for no reason, which doesn’t really do anything but encourage poor behavior (because if you punish everyone for no reason anyway, why do the right thing that’s harder). Having soldiers perform twelve mile ruck marches in full kit and ordering them not to drink doesn’t really condition their bodies to operate on low water, it really just raises the chances of a heat injury through dehydration. A good training commander is understood as good, but he was not helping them at all. Overuse and overtraining are real things and he was hurting them far more than helping with the extra punitive training. I guess you could say he was instrumental in the fact that he united easy co in their hatred of him, but that’s not very smart because he fully expected to bring them into combat with him. He’s not exactly supposed to be their friend, but if he’s doing his job right, there should be a mutual respect amongst them. He shattered that with the extreme punitive measures such as making a soldier repeat a twelve mile road march immediately upon completion because he drank half a canteen of water. That’s twenty four miles. That distance, when your training, is enough for a whole week.

Yup, without water I would have quit. Better men than me would have made it, but I'd be like nope. I can march, run up the stupid hill, camp and survive with hardly anything, but without water? Lol

For real. Dehydration is an enemy to combat readiness.

Yes Michael Fassbender played Christensen. Funny thing, Christensen was quoted quite a bit in the book that Band of Brothers was based on but got pushed to being a minor character in the series. And he’s played by Michael Fassbender who goes on to being the most famous actor in this series.

If the dudes making you run in full gear every Friday. Then gag down as much water as you can all day Friday, Drink until you are pissing clear. Then drink even more. Along with really over-salting your lunch and dinner. Just prep yourself for the run

Sobel says Easy is “My Company”… but doesn’t March the 12 miles with them… I would argue he was not the Company Commander and Winters already was….

Not letting guys drink from their canteens is top level bullshit. I remember this still happened in 2006 when I was in the Finnish military service. It was during basic training and oh boy was it a hot day. Drink I did.
