Nice drink though! I gotta try and find an import non-chill filtered Rare Breed. The Rare Breed Rye is a great mixer. I found Forgiven and feather bottle Kentucky Spirit a year ago in low-key San Clemente & San Juan Capistrano liquor stores for $60-$70. Older Turkey bottles can still be found in So Cal out in the fringe cities if one wants to hunt!

Great drink through guys! Where's the Russell's Reserve though? You can't do Wild Turkey without Russell's Reserve. I do have to agree with you though. Rare Breed is an excellent sipper, and one of my favorites, while 101 is just an excellent value for either sipping or mixing. Rare Breed routinely beats out other bourbons that are several times its price tag for me. It's just that good. Russell's Reserve Single Barrel is also right up there with Rare Breed, but it does tend to have a more focused flavor profile. While Rare Breed has more caramel sweetness that transitions to some slight fruit and spice on the finish, I find that Russell's Reserve Single Barrel tends to hit you hard with cinnamon and spice with some underlying fruit notes. Both are great, but I gravitate more toward Rare Breed. If you guys are able to track a bottle down, definitely see if you can find a Master's Keep 17 Bottled in Bond. It beat out George T Stagg in a flight for me. I'm definitely going to have to see if I can find bottles of the Rare Breed non-chill filtered and the 13 year now. Ugh.... that's going to be tough.

Enjoy the video guys. Thanks for doing this long but very enjoyable drink through. Rare Breed bourbon is my regular pour of bourbon and I do enjoy it a lot more than the KY Spirit. Definitely will pick up the non-chilled filtered when I travel abroad later this year. I have been putting off on Rare Breed Rye for a while but will grab a bottle soon so that I can compare it with the Master Keep Cornerstone. I finished a bottle of Decade with friends long time ago, it was worth the price of a bit over $100 back then for me. Still have an unopened bottle of the 17yrs Bottled in Bond. I bought all 3 different MK bottles at MSRP. They were sub $150 before taxes. I would never buy any new versions now that they all are well over $250 MSRP.

I love any content on Wild Turkey. It is one of my two favorite bourbon distillers along with MGP. You asked for the complaints first, and so I'll give you some. You focused heavily on things that are not available in today's market while skipping over the lowest hanging of fruit and the best of Turkey: Russell's Reserve. I guess the logic is that it doesn't say "Wild Turkey" on the label? I would say that Kentucky Spirit is to WT101 as Russell's Reserve is to Rare Breed. Of course, all of the single barrel offerings are going to taste a little different, which leads me to wonder why you included Kentucky Spirit at all. I kind of agree with you all on Revival. It has never been a favorite of mine, but David Jennings, aka Rare Bird 101, the guy who literally wrote the book on Turkey, considers it his favorite. My personal favorites are the Wild Turkey Masters Keep Bottled in Bond 17 and the 1992 Russell's Reserve Release as well as the latest Russell's 13 release. The Russell's 13 can be obtained if you search hard enough. The others are unobtainium. I'll do another post below on what is special about WT.

Love the whole line up guys, with one caveat, the corks on ALL but 3 of those bottles had no cork squeak. I wouldn't buy any of these bourbons for long term storage with Russell's loosey goosey corks. PLEASE fix your cork's! Buy them to drink within weeks unless you change the cork after opening. You can turn those corks in the stores with very limited effort even with the plastic wrap.

I completely agree with you about the Chill Filtering on the Rare Breed. BUT I do understand why WT does it. The CF process strips fatty acids from juice, compounds that go cloudy or precipitate solids, when the whiskey is chilled/served on ice. It can be an extremely off putting aesthetic experience, if you like a whiskey rock. And I would bet WT knows the majority of non-nerds take ice in their pours. They unfortunately probably outnumber we nerds, who would rather have the extra 5% in flavors.

@jkojiro49452 жыл бұрын
I could be wrong, but I thought that chill filtering is easier and cheaper to complete then non-chill filtering. They both are filtered, so the idea that a step is skipped is possibly incorrect. This distinction is one that you could make a video about since these processes might be pretty neat to dive into.

A few things make Wild Turkey special. First, they employ a low entry proof relative to competing heritage distillers at 115 proof. The law is 125 proof and most distillers go with that for their rye bourbon mash bills. Prior to 2004, WT entered at 107 proof. That increased to 110 in 2004 and 115 in 2006. Why the increases? Money. If you are making an 81 proof and 101 proof product, you get to add a lot more water with a higher barrel entry proof. Basically, you end up with more final volume in each barrel. When Peerless was starting to distill, they asked Eddie the key to good distillate. And he said entering the barrel at 107. They asked what Eddie went in with and he said 115. When they asked why, he said "Because Campari makes me." This is a story told in a liquor store, but it makes sense. Peerless goes in at 107, BTW. Wild Turkey calls its 13 percent rye mash bill a "high rye" mashbill. I would call it a "middle rye" mash bill. Buffalo Trace and Heaven Hill's low rye mash bills are around 10 percent. Four Roses and MGP have a high rye mash bill of 35/36% and a "low rye" mash bill of 20/21%. In comparison to Four Roses, WT is very low rye. I call it a mid rye. Finally, in WT101 and Rare Breed, the Russell's famously blend several different ages of bourbon together. I don't know anyone else that does this. This is gutsy because it almost disqualifies you from putting an age statement on the bourbon. Rare Breed is a blend of 6, 8, and 12 year bourbons (some years, it is rumored to have even older juice). They "destroy" the 12 year age statement by blending in the 6 year, which would require a 6 year age statement (they put no age statement at all). I forget the ages in 101. It is also cross-vintage blended. Fun fact... one of my other favorites, Aaron Chepenik at Smoke Wagon, cross-vintage blends his Uncut, Unfiltered. Typically with 4/5 year barrels and 7/8/9 year barrels. Not quite the age of Rare Breed, but a nice balance of flavors. Cheers, guys!
@adamlogan3842 жыл бұрын
Interesting stuff, I love WT. The only thing I would say is that nothing disqualifies them from an age statement. The nature of age statements is that it has to be the youngest spirit in the bottle. I would offer that they don't ruin the 12 year old by adding it (it would only be a small amount), but that they improve the 6 and 8 year old stuff, which is much more plentiful, by adding the 12 year stuff. I guess that's just semantics, but I do think the ratios should factor in to descriptions in this case.
@cartermayfield2 жыл бұрын
I didn't say that they were disqualified from giving an age statement. When Aaron Chepenik was starting Smoke Wagon, he told some people in the industry that he wanted to blend the 8 year with the 4 year. He really liked 6 year, but there was none available, and he thought the blend was awesome. People in the industry told him that is not the best way to maximize. You barrel the 4 year product as a Straight Bourbon with no age statement and you sell the 8 year with an age statement. That allows you to sell with a higher age statement. Even for their age stated stuff, the Russells are notorious for adding older juice. No doubt, the new 12 year old 101 release (Japanese market only, don't get your hopes up) will likely contain older juice. The Russell's 13 has significant amounts of 19 year juice in last year's release and 18 and 20 year juice in this year's release. They don't play by the rules. But generally, heritage distillers won't release things with a 6 year age statement. It just isn't that impressive. Maybe a few ryes do that. We DO see 5 and 6 year age stated MGP coming on the market. But those are NDP's trying to make the most of what they bought.
@adamlogan3842 жыл бұрын
@@cartermayfield as I said, just semantics. Not trying to argue with you, as you CLEARLY are more educated on this than I am. But you literally said "it almost disqualifies them from using an age statement". That was the statement I was making reference to. And I DO see the "almost" for the record.

I was able to pick up the rare breed rye at Costco for $51. I bought one on a whim. Let’s just say I burned through it in no time flat. I went back and bought 5 more. Interesting! I am quite a Turkey fanboy, with Rare Breed being the MVP on my shelf for many years now. I get not as much of a difference in the non chill filtered one, but it is clearly there (luckily sticked up). It really depends on the batch of the regular, you are tasting. Compared to the newer 2020 and 2021 batches (lasercode first letter I and J), the difference is considerable, not sooo much for the 2019 batches. I never got a Masters Keep for a good price in Germany, so I like your assessment a lot 😅 Cheers 🥃

Kind of a microcosm of my entire whisky collection - and actual whisky drinking. 135 bottles - most purchased due to fomo, oh that looks cool, oh that got good reviews, oh that’s hard to find and (of course) the liquor stores being open during Covid. Some are great and basically irreplaceable - so I rarely drink them. Many are “interesting” - a polite way of saying not that great. Many are decent but indistinguishable from all the rest. A dozen or so are actually good and reasonably priced and possible to find with some effort - so I drink them frequently. 14 pared down to 4 sounds about the ratio I could live with with my stash.
@bigzach3222 жыл бұрын
I love WT Rye 101, it punches well above its price. I also think Russell's Reserve Rye Single Barrel is one of the best ryes on the shelf. You guys were leaving out a key component in your comparison to Whistle Pig though, the rye mash bill. Wild Turkey is barely legal, like Pikesville and Knob Creek. Whistle Pig sources MGP 95/5 or Alberta 100%. The difference is pretty radical between barely legal rye and the 95% rye, I consider them subcategories of rye like we do with high rye and low rye bourbon or wheated bourbon. Whistle Pig is grossly overpriced though, so I agree with the broad point!
