The Sheikh Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) in Dubai is a fantastic place to learn about Emirati culture. The cultural center is in the Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood in Dubai. The building for the cultural center is in a wind tower house. We sat in the majlis (sitting place in the house where the host welcomes guests). It was beautifully decorated with colorful carpets and pillows. The cultural lunch program consisted of questions and answers with a local Emirati as well as lunch. For the traditional Emirati lunch. we ate (chicken biryani, machboos (spiced chicken and rice), saloona (traditional stew from the UAE), and my favorite Emirati dessert - luqaimats (fried dough with date syrup). We were also given gahwa (Arabic coffee). We learned about the traditions of gahwa and how to let the host know that you are finished with your coffee. The presenter was from Dubai, so she was able to discuss the changes that Dubai has gone through in her lifetime. It was a fun, interactive, and informative question and answer session. We learned a lot of information at the cultural center and would highly recommend it. In addition to cultural lunches, the center also offers cultural breakfast and dinner programs.
