About 4-1/2 years ago I did a video about the most advanced robots at the time, ASIMO, Atlas, Cheetah, Spot and Pepper. After seeing the Atlas dance video I thought it would be good to see what has happened to our famous five robots and what the future might be for legged robots and humanoid style robots.

A friend of mine is a power wheelchair user, and connecting Alexa units to networked light plugs gave him full control of the lighting in his apartment for the first time in his life. Prior to putting in the system (which was remarkably affordable compared to dedicated systems for disabled people of decades past), he had to rely on his part time care attendants to turn on or off most of the lights in his place, and when he was on his own, he could only reach a couple of lights.

I think you're missing the key achievement of Boston Dynamics' robots versus something like Asimo: dynamic balance. Asimo precisely executed preprogrammed movements that always kept its CG under one or both feet so as to be passively stable at all points during its walk cycle. Boston Dynamics' spot, big dog, etc. balance dynamically like a human. They use proprioception, mathematics, and knowledge of their environment to plan and executive dynamic movements that need not be stable throughout, but still keep them balanced. They also adapt to unexpected deviations. The dance you showed has choreographed steps, but it is evident that the robots can deviate somewhat from the programmed routine to correct their balance. Otherwise, errors would compound and the robots would quickly end up on the floor. It's more than simple key framing.

There has been a few comments about the what i said about Atlas using MOCAP and that it would not work so let me rephrase it. I was suggesting MOCAP because of the smoothness of the moves, something that a human does naturally. ASIMO always seemed to be rather robotic (pun) in its movement similar to earlier Atlas videos but in this latest video the moves are much more elegant. As I said in the video, I thought MOCAP data could be the basis but its priority would not be allowed to override the basic stability systems or it would just fall over due to the difference between the mass distribution of the human that created the moves and Atlas. I could be completely wrong about this but if I am I would be surprised if they hadn't thought about it. The choreographer software that Spot uses and was shown in Adam Savages Tested video has the basic movement routines from which others are built up from but if it could import MOCAP data and allow the software to use it within limits and then tweak it accordingly I think it would be a lot quicker for more sophisticated moves like Atlas used. So I agree that a direct port of MOCAP data would not work but the only way will know for sure is when BD tell us how they did it with Atlas, so if anyone is watching from BD please comment.

Curious Droid how you left aside the NAO robot, originally from France but now owned by some Japan company?. The tiny humanoid robot not ot only do interesting things walk, sit, push ups and get up/stand up but its creator allow (at least until the last time I knew) to program it to who ever purchase it. Right There is a huge difference. The creator not only shares truly the robot but also implicit acknowledges the next step is the programming not the robot itself

Is there no kinematic prediction/calculation program? I allways thought the robot would simulate, execute compare the deviance and update the simulation all at the same time, basicly a deep learning network that tweeks the simulation untill it reaches perfection.

Boston dynamics didn’t use motion capture to get their robots to dance. Adam Savage Tested channel have a video which they programme spot to dance using the dancing software. Which had preprogrammed moves that are strung together to form the dance against a timeline. Similar to music or video editing software in interface. Everything is very adjustable, they use the basic moves like ‘jump’ and using adjustment slides can change them into numerous different sorts of jumps.

I attended a public showing of ASIMO at the University in my hometown. It was a really cool demonstration, and it seemed like the future was "right around the corner." I was saddened by Honda deciding not to continue the research. As long as the "future around the corner" doesn't involve humans getting destroyed by Skynet, I'm okay if we get to see it.

It's not just keyframes though, it's an animation, yes, but the machine makes its choices to where it puts it's feet, and move it's arms to insure it keeps it's balance.

Yes, and if they used the same framework for The dance video, then Marc was really off in the video. The ability to seamlessly combine complex moves while maintaining stability is something completely different than he describes.

Most interesting robot I remember from recent history is the 6 ton Tmsuk T-52 Enryu "Rescue Dragon", made the news back in 2014. It's still around, Tmsuk now offer T-54 Enryu and T-55 Enryu. Thought it's still entirely operator controlled, via wireless remote, it's one of the most unusual robots.

2:23 Honda is losing money and has been losing money for a long time now. They are losing millions in decreased sales and every hybrid vehicle they make costs the company money. For instance the Honda Insight hybrid costs ~35k to make and they are selling them for ~$23k. ASIMO is a burden on the company that they couldn't afford to support anymore so they cut it off.

It was pretty clear from the beginning that Honda's robot line was exclusively designed for (and by) the Japanese market. ASIMO, to be charitable, placed way, way too much of a priority on being kawaii for PR purposes. It had to be humanlike and cute so Japanese people would want to invest in it and (ultimately) buy it for their home. Boston Dynamics went the other direction: practical functionality over appearance. This is why they have an extensive line of non-bipedal robots to do tasks that involve actual workforce uses, instead of, say, kicking a soccer ball to Barack Obama on national TV. Sorry if this seems strident but I knew even as a child that ASIMO was strictly a public relations prop.

At the same time, Asimo came out they had the first driverless car race (2004 DARPA Challenge). I actually never thought this car tech would be mass-produced today but it is. Sometimes tech advances fast and sometimes much slower than you would expect. I'll take driverless tech over "welcome your new overlords" any day.
