I was in jail when Katrina hit. where I was, we didn't get the full effect of the storm. I was way up north in Louisiana. (I'm from metairie Louisiana.. like 6 miles from new orleans..) The jail I was in had dorms that housed 53 inmates. They bought some of the inmates from orleans parish to where we were and it was a total of 110 inmates in a dorm only suited for 53.. ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE!! I was suppose to get out Aug. 27th. But due to the storm, I was released Dec. 12th.. They (The guards) drove me to Baton Rouge, gave me 10 bucks and said good luck.. I was stuck at the grayhound bus station for 4 days because no buses were going to new orleans. I seen this Arab cab driver standing outside his cab smoking and I asked for a cigarette. I noticed he had a phone and asked to use it. He let me but all numbers I called were disconnected or just not working. After I told him my story, he felt so bad that he brought me some food and gave me a ride to my old neighborhood. I don't know where I'd be without that cab driver. I wish I remembered his name. I'd like to thank him again for going out his way to bring me 65 miles away from his city to my town.
