Cursed to Golf Nintendo Switch Review - Is It Worth It?

I love how Golf is the most interesting sport represented on Switch. Mario Golf, Golf Story, Switch Sports Golf and now Cursed to Golf. It’s funny how I’m not a Sports fan whatsoever, but I really like playing wacky sports games like Mario Sports or things like this

I love 2D pixel art games as well. Especially with good music. This looks like a must buy. Hopefully just not at the same price as other big title games.

I am really enjoying it but down the line it would be a fun party game with a more simplistic format. I hope it becomes a multiplayer in a future update.

Solid review. I love the game, but also wish it were more "roguelite" than "roguelike" (ie, that it offered meta-progression). That said, you can save scum if you like. Just quit before you lose a level. The game will take you back to right before you entered that level. This can still be frustrating, since levels can take quite awhile to complete and it sucks to get to the last few shots and realize you're about to lose, but it's still better than having to start the entire run over, imo. Some may call this cheating, but for me it makes the difference between a game I'll come back to again and again, and one I would probably quit before even beating it for the first time. So for others like me, know that there is an option that allows us to enjoy the game, even if it's less than ideal in nature.

Meta-progression is not really a requirement for a game to be considered "roguelite". Roguelites are basically genres with roguelike elements mixed in. Some roguelites do have meta progression, like Rogue Legacy, and some don't, like Spelunky.

I try not to save scum but I did once after a bug made me lose - I was working on a boss battle and relying on cards and the powerup that gives you 5 more swings after your first death on any given hole rather than aggressively going after trophies. The game made me die instead of giving me the 5 extra swings. I gladly save-scummed on that and ate a few +6 cards before doing anything in the level again.

This game is good but also annoying. I keep losing to the first boss and I keep getting sent all the way back to the beginning of the game. This game needs a death defiance mechanic that you can earn like in Hades. It is frustrating to play for over an hour just to lose and have to start all over again.

The game looks great and seemed really fun for me until you said about no progression, and starting from the beginning all over again, pass. They should put an option for people who would enjoy the game but don't want to grind forever at it.

I watched a streamer play this and the stream lasted around 6 hours and he didn't even finish the run. That is way to long for a roguelike! If I bought this game I feel like it would be disrespecting my time. I don't care how fun it is if I lose 6 hours of progress and that's a mechanic, no thanks.

Why would you do a roguelite without progression? Especially if it's really challenging! I love golf games, the music, the art. But the nature of the game really deters me from getting this. Maybe I'll wait for a deep sale.

That's the difference between a roguelike and a roguelite. "Roguelike" games generally offer no meta-progression. When you die, you start completely from scratch, as if it were a new game. "Roguelite" games differ in that, yes, you lose a lot of progress when you die, but you also make some sort of progress that carries over between runs. A lot of people confuse the terms, which leads to players experiencing frustration when they pick up a "roguelike" game expecting a "roguelite" instead. Fwiw, the eshop description of Cursed to Golf refers to the game as a cross between golf and a "roguelike" game. Not roguelite. That said, while I love the game for what it is, I agree some form of meta-progression (turning the game into a roguelite) would make it even better. Roguelites tend to appeal to a wider audience than roguelikes, so it would definitely help the devs if they released some sort of (free?) DLC that offered optional meta progression. No idea if they'll do so - it would likely depend on the game's initial sales, which ironically may be lower because the game doesn't include that option to start. Oh well. It's still a fun game. Just look at it more as a relaxing, golf-meets-puzzle arcade type game with the added ability to save and come back between levels. Very few arcade games offer meta-progression, yet plenty of people enjoy them.

@@fotografick I completely agree. If it helps any, there is one way you can carry over a bit of progression between runs. The game offers a card binder you can access between levels. If you put some of your cards (which are essentially single use special skills) into the binder, they'll be available on your next run. That helps if you get a bunch of one type of card and want to save some for a future run. Also, the game allows for a bit of save scumming, If you realize you're about to lose, you can actually quit the game. The game will then reload to a save point just before you entered the last level. While this can be frustrating, since levels can take quite awhile to complete, it's definitely better than starting a whole new run. I have no idea if they'll patch this out in the future, but for now it's something I'm not ashamed to say I take full advantage of, lol.
