I'm writing this in English because I'm in a rush and try as I might to change reality, it's still my first language. I want to express my sincerest and most heartfelt gratitude and thanks to you a chara for these indispensable resources you have so graciously provided to the world for free. This video and your ones on vowels, consonants and pronunciation with IPA have driven me to improve and de-Anglicise my pronunciation to the extent where I barely even recognise my own voice when speaking Irish now. You've explained things in such a thorough and entertaining way and my only complaint is that I can't get enough! Go raibh míle míle maith 'ad.

Some of this reminds me of the stuff going on to recreate the proper pronunciation of Shakespeare plays, due to the vowel shift. Nice when things meant to rhyme actually do rhyme. :D

I’m from Belfast and discovered your videos a few months ago, absolutely love learning about our language and your videos are simply the best I’ve come across. The Gaelic of the Isle of Barra uses ‘Dhíom’ 1:11:48 instead of the usual ‘Bhuam’ of Scottish Gaelic. Interesting to see it here as I always thought that this was ‘Barra slang’. If these poems were transcribed out of the old script and into Latin orthography, and presented to a Scottish Gaelic speaker/reader, then they would be more or less completely understandable. To someone from the Southern Hebrides at least.

After a lot of research and trawling through recorded bapstisms and historical records I was I able to find out that my ancestors hale from Carlow County. I was told they spoke gaelic and was trying to find where they were from in order to reclaim and relearn their language my family has since "lost". Thank you for this video, makes me feel one step closer to practicing the language my family would have spoken.

while watching @22:55 of this video, for the first time ever in my life, i graduated from a tongue tip tapped "r" to a pitifully short little trill. 🥳 thank you for these videos. idly watching them while playing with my mouth has helped with learning Irish phonemes! 💞 do you have any recommendations for Irish learning resources? (i haven't been through the formal education system, so not much 'rehabilitation' required, probably) i don't know how much choice learners have; it seems everything is geared towards the Caighdeán Oifigiúil.

@@yukiwhitley 'Now you're talking' is great for Ulster, after you finish it the 'Céim ar aghaidh' programme can take you from intermediate, both of those are great resources. I guess Buntús na Gaeilge and the Ulster based Mar a Déarfá videos might be a decent accompaniment to those courses

45.40 About [ɛ] in Donegal - some subdialects do actually preserve this before s, d(h), g(h)! I was very confused by gadaidhe [gɛDi], deas [d´ɛs] etc from speakers from Toraigh but you just explained the rule and reason perfectly. It also seems to have become [ï] in some words eg creag [k´r´ïg].

@internetual7350 It would have something related to the potato famin I am sure, and probably a sentiment against the English as my Dad's side of the family moved to the U.S. 1771 and had has some English ancestors also. I didn't know her very well, but I am sure her heart was with her/our Irish ancestors. My ancestors family name was Collin. My Dad always repeated her saying whenever he went to take a dump... Also my Dad had an Irish accent that I suspect came from my grandma.

@Rián I'm reading it now. You're correct. The info was collected by Breathnach from a Matthew Byrne, aged 84 presumably sometime in the 1930s, Tulach Uí Bhroin, 1 mile north of Kilkenny City. Patrick Power, 92, Gleann Mór, South Kilkenny.

Just to give you a sense of it, according to the linguistic atlas, in Kilkenny City environs, they said: 'Dé cur (?) a thá tú/ Dé mar thá tú' for 'how are you' .

A few tips. Forget cracking jokes, it doesn't work. Also, you write the S and R the same. The old style R has a longer arm to distinguish it from the S. Seachas sin tá sé spéiseamhail.

He didn’t write S and R the same. His S has an almost flat horizontal arm (with just a slight curve) at the top, the R has two diagonal segments in its arm - it might be shorter than in most Gaelic types’ R and might look more similar to their S - but nevertheless there is a very clear difference between his S and his R.

It's just that when I write, as I always do in sean chló, I habitually make the R with a much longer downward sweeping arm, if for no other reason than that's how I learned to write it by hand at school in the mid 50s by teachers who only wrote that way. The Caighdeán hadn't caught on much then.

I enjoy his humour, it definitely makes his videos very enjoyable for me. An hour and a half of non-stop grammar would be fantastic, but it's definitely enhanced (for me at least) by the odd joke or two
