Jamaicans and US R&B artists had a deep bond. All the R&B hits coming out of the US were instantly broadcast in Jamaica so that fact and additional unifying factors of love of Black Music makes it simple to understand how bands like The Impressions, Chilites etc influenced young up and coming reggae artists in the 60s and 70s...

This is when music really mattered, Mayfield had a voice from god & could deliver a message across like no other. He's the original street poet. No one like him

love this live performance, from the old grey whistle test, curtis mayfield soul legend, who sang about life and truth. just someone who should still be here, shame he ended up paralysied, a real shame, i hope curtis you are reasting peacefully in heaven. old grey whistle test, the best ever music programme us uk people had, never mind top of the pops, they at time one could not play or sing live.

My dad who ran WOW-AM in Omaha (50,000 watt) during these years recalled Mayfield was always one of the best bets for listener feedback. Even Paul McCartney of the Wings said Mayfield was his top three favorite artists of all time. I think what it is was Curtis made people feel good. At the same time the music was so dynamic and ground breaking. My favorite Hammond organist Richard 'Groove' Holmes - now I can see were he got the funk lines from.

Great quality post Rolfbron, and as you say a full live recording, and as someone mentioned before, played at a low volume, down to '1'!, and sounding stripped down, funky and crystal clear as a result. A very different version to the '71 "Roots" version which sounds significantly earlier, more orchestrated and Motown-ish.

When music was takened out of the school systems and the record companies are more about hits and cloning artist to sound like the latest "it" entertainer. Very few artist were as profound and socially conscious like Mayfield was. Can you name a artist of today who had serious lyrics like him, voice like he had and can play the hell out of guitar? Noone had his style of playing. When he died he took that style of playing and lyrical geniusness with him

relaxpayourincometax Not surprised how revered this is. Something more than extra special about this..a perfect quiet storm of gentle persuasion personified. Don’t want to diss the album version but this pared down version without the orchestration is mighty mighty alright. All sounds whipping it up gently round the delicate urging tones of Curtis pleading so sweetly for peace and the soft landing at the end is a joy to hear and behold. If only we could bring back Curtis.

Until they bring music classes back in the school system and ACTUALLY TEACH instruments that can play sounds we will have so called singers using voicebox's as their voices and manufactured sounds. Record companies also have to be willing to give new acts with something important a chance to do their thang
