I was a crew chief on A-10s from '86-'92 out of Myrtle Beach AFB. I used to do my engine run qualifications in a real A-10 simulator. It was a multi-million dollar simulator controlled by a mainframe and it had NO outside visuals. Your work on this is amazing! I bet our pilots would have loved to have something like this to train in before going up on their first flight. Being a 1 seater they were solo on their first flight.

This is so right. I just watched a documentary about the Vietnam air war & how the F4 Phantom crews weren’t as successful as they had hoped, which led the navy to instigate the Top Gun training scheme, at Myramar; they came back after 3 weeks training & were on top form. That classic “I’ll put the brakes on, and he’ll fly right by me” manoeuvre, was an actual thing!

Imagine the cost of this setup compared to the monumental cost something the government would try and create.
@Trve_Kvlt
@Trve_Kvlt 4 жыл бұрын
@@TABRO284 The government would put 10s of millions into research, the whole setup would be at least 5 mil, and it wouldn't be nearly as effective as a training tool as something a lot of civilians make. Even having an ultrawide 4K monitor, the HOTAS Warthog, and some addon avionics panels would be more effective as training tool than anything the military would come up with.

I put mirrors on my ceiling and on the perpendicular walls to give some related movement beyond the main wall-screen, but this is just next level. Almost unbelievable! we made the world's first (we think) curved screen in 1987 (on a jet sim) and used crt based projectors - and had to map all edges by analog adjustments of dozens of potentiometers on the circuit boards - took 12 hours, and then when our engineer closed the covers - it all went askew - so we had to remove the case - fortunately they were hanging from mounts so no safety issues - we eventually coded the mapping into our runtime software - but WOW - nothing as kewl as THIS setup - makes me want to build another sim !

Mate, if you really want to get a divorce, you really need to go and talk to Chris as CKAS simulators in Tullamarine. Get yourself a motion platform :-) The significant other will love it!

All you need is some screen/projector displaying view above your head. Well done.

I'm surprised that the image is in focus across the curve when these projectors are designed to project onto a flat surface.

Where as most non nerds would say "you have no life"...Instead I say, "you have no wife" 😂 My Ex would have had a fit if she came home one day and I was constructing a cockpit in the back room 😂

Proper job! Flying over enemy territory with a bottle of beer :D That's an awesome addition to the screen! I guess the next logical step is a dome above and skirts below down to the floor to create a sphere... just throwing that in there ;)

This setup gets beaten easily by VR when it comes to immersion.

No. 1- there is a difference in the movement of the camera inside the virtual space according to the movements of the accelerometer built into the VR helmet and the actual movement of the head 2 - Depending on the viewing angle and involving peripheral vision, the real resolution in this installation is much higher, because here the resolution of the projectors is tripled (potentially 4K x3), and in the helmet the resolution is divided by 2 (i.e. maximum 4K /2). 3 - Here the tension of the eye muscles and lens is much lower due to the distance to the plane on which you need to focus your eyes. 4- real control panels 5- And if you compare the cost of three projectors and one suitable helmet? ...

@@capsyatina the point was IMMERSION, and by depth perception alone, this setup, while impressive, is beaten.

Agree, VR does this and so much more. Also this is a FLAT2D image, VR has REAL DEPTH, Real Scale of the world, also you can view UP (a welcome feature for combat plane)..or back, you are not stuck to one cockpit control panel, etc. There are multiple valid reasons to overcome this setup with VR.

I have no interest in flight sims, and this vid for some reason started playing due to youtube autoplay next vid. To be honest i'm glad it did, very impressive and with your seat/cockpit set up i bet the immersion is amazing while sat there flying. Take a big fat like from me!
