Just like u, and I check. Luckily, it is here: How Do I Connect two Concepts without a Linking Phrase in Between Press and hold the 'Shift' key down while you create your link to either an existing or new concept. To permanently change the setting you need to modify the "cmaptools.cfg" configuration file which is located in bin directory in the folder where CmapTools is installed. Locate the entry: # =============================== # By default linking phrases are added between concepts. Set this to true to # not add linking phrases by default. (True | False) # =============================== editor.dont.add.linkingphrases=false With a text editor, change the last line to read: editor.dont.add.linkingphrases=true Source: www.cmappers.net/docs/cmaptools-faqs

Concepts that are connected to each other are supposed to have a specific type of connection. In my case I use grammatical prepositions (because, results from, etc.). The reasoning for this is that meaningful learning occurs when new knowledge is linked to existing knowledge.

sorry, it seems you havent't applied any criteria of hiearchy of concepts! Connections are asymmetrical, as you told, but their preferred direction is from the most inclusive concept to the less, giving the cmap a pyramidal - top-down structure. Reflecting to create best linking phrases to connect two concepts is important for students, but it is also important to set the whole structure as a coherent unit. So you could start from placing the first concepts at different levels first of connecting them. This is also true for the search of a root or "top" concept, as it could be "water" in that cmap. Another important feature that is lacking in that cmap is the focus question. Without such a guide it most likely that your relationships are arbitrary. FInally there are often ternary propositions (single claim that connects three concepts) that are uneasy to fix with orthodox concept mapping syntax. I wanna try,
