It is amazing that two brothers from a humble blue collar family (their father was a farmer and blacksmith) should achieve so much in the US Army. A man from a wealthly socially prominent family could expect high rank just because of his connections, but a man without the benefit of wealth or high social class had little chance of advancement. One Custer brother earned high rank and rock star fame, and the other his country's highest honors by sheer bravery that might as well be described as foolhardiness. That either brother survived the Civil War was a miracle. Most movies do not even mention that one of the country's greatest hero's died at the Little Big Horn. Tom Custer was as much a hero as Alvin York of World War 1 or Audie Murphy of World War 2. Sadly, he was overshadowed by his more flamboyant older brother during his lifetime, and virtually forgotten after his death.

Been 38 two times winners of the medal of honor some of the natives said there was a Capt giving orders and was the last one down personally if it true I think it was Tom and not Yates

Hi Siobhan, another fascinating 7th Cavalry story about the lesser known Tom Custer. It is amazing how fractious and divided the 7th really were, virtually every Officer had an axe to grind either for or against the Custer clan. If a film were made, they wouldn't need a Hollywood script because the real-life stories are already there, and you tell it with such enthusiasm and passion. Look forward to part two.

I have researched Custer and LBH participants extensively since I took an interest in grade school. Still, you always give new facts and information. Fantastic video as usual! The first of only 19 men to be awarded 2 Medals of Honor. It is a very exclusive group and, given current standards, would be almost impossible for anyone else to receive 2. Fantastic courage under fire.

Really good telling of tom,those 2 medals of of honor served him well in securing a commission rightfully so. I imagine the toxicity after the war amongst the officers was vicious for commissions. Libby custer must have been a force to be reckoned with knowing how she preserved the custer name after lbh and during his suspension. Amazing how anyone survived those battles without multiple wounds even more so to want to continue on as soldiers. Different bred of men and I'm honored to have served with some of the same caliber of men myself.

We all hear about Custer and the big figures like Crazy Horse or Gall or Sitting Bull but rarely the regular soldiers, wives, braves, or scouts like you've done. Love those most of us can relate to them. Anything history based is good for future videos. I think very little is ever spoken of on the Spanish American War, or even the Mexican War so much lost history in those wars.

Love the pictures! The situation Custer created with shooting those men and then going AWOL himself. Someone once described the relationships among the command of the Seventh as toxic. I can see why. I can’t imagine coming across the bodies of soldiers in such horrifying conditions.

Another great video on the troops of the 7th Cav. I can't wait for part two on Tom. One correction in the video you said the last US soldier shot for desertion was in 1845. Did you mean 1945? Eddie Slovik was found guilty of desertion and executed on 31Jan1945. He was the only American soldier court martialed and executed for desertion since the Civil war. As to the Custer court martial and desertion charge etc. I cannot but think that GAC at this point in life was suffering from PTSD and being at such at young age let his overload of male hormone and consequent urge for his wife and those intimacies that he would surely find with her,( Libbie has basically confirmed this), caused his actions that led to his court martial. I can only imagine this young warriors state of mind and I for one hold him blameless for his actions , at least I can excuse them. :)

I think he felt like it was a life or death situation after the summer of carnage and frustration. Libbie remembered his return as one of the best days of their marriage, as he proved that he loved her more than his career/ the Army.

Loved the story Ms. Fallon. You are a gifted storyteller and these stories are extremely well researched. May I offer a couple of comments. As noted the Fetterman fight was in Wyoming. I suspect you visited the site and there is an incredibly gripping book on the fight and siege of Fort Philip Kearny by Dee Brown very well known for Bury mHeart at Wounded Knee an Arkansas author.

Meant to finish my story since I am a transplanted Arkansan that you may not have known that Maurice Footsie Britt who served as Lieutenant Governor of Arkansas in the Win Rockefeller Adminstration was as decorated as Audie Murphy including the Medal of Honor. He spoke to my intern class in 1986 when running for Governor. When he came in the classroom he had no left arm lost at Anzio. He also was a star football player for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks and Detroit Lions. An incredible man and hero.

Yes, good point. I think it was General Nelsom Miles who reviewed all the MOH awards and revoked the ones that were unnecessary. Tom kept his. 🙏

I remember, the many of Wounded Knee were in discussion later for example. Butchering fleeing children and mothers with modern hotchkiss cannons is not bravery in the same way like Audie Murphy done in World War 2.

Hey John. Thanks for commenting! Looking forward to you providing evidence of your so called charge of "racism" against Tom and George Custer, who fought with distinction in the Civil War, both for the Union of course, in an effort to end slavery? Tom Custer was shot in the face. George also wounded, had 11 horses shot out from under him. Lesser men didn't fight for freedom. They did. They were willing to die for freedom, and they almost did. Also look up Eliza, a self-liberated woman who chose to work for Custer. When a restaurant refused to serve her because of her skin color, every officer in the 7th Cavalry stood up in protest until they brought her lunch too. The Custers and the 7th were also stationed down South to help Reconstruction and to fight the KKK. Please research this, as you seem not to know about their history at all 🤷🏼‍♀️
